Chapter 2: Patient 003

The room was quiet. It was filled with the whispering noises of papers being turned pages over pages, and the silent buzzing of a mechanical machine. There were men classified by the color of the shirt they are wearing. Those in white laboratory coat were doing experiments with the petri-dishes and flasks all over their table, while those ones who wore a blue coat with an all-body protective gear were observing human corpses. It was covered with thick metal walls, and everything were thoroughly contained. The room has 4 large glass windows making the entirety of the inside visible. A middle-aged man wearing a blue-framed glasses and a formal tuxedo entered the room with the white lab coat.

"So, what progress do we have doctor?" he asked smiling as he tapped the shoulders of a busy man who shares the same age features with Carlos and also wore thick glasses, working on with a test tube. The man walked towards the small laboratory table and reached for a document and handed it to Carlos.

"We're still observing the effects of the chemical sir. As of now, the patients are still under the observation. It has been 6 hours now since the injection of the chemical has been done. The patient that has shown initial effects somehow was patient number three, the rest are still observed. Major updates of the chemical effects are expected for patient number three for the next 12 hours and ..."

"Oh, save me the time Doctor. It's not like you haven't known me for the long time" Carlos silenced the Doctor.

"Show me patient number three's updated vital signs." Carlos continued,

The doctor handed the papers to Carlos. He paused and read and seemed so fascinated upon what his eyes have seen. He gave out a big smile and a warm gentle sigh, a light sigh of victory.

"It's great to hear how our experiments have finally yielded some progress doctor, eh? The progress may seem slow but the results will always be big. Even bigger for our government to handle! Good work doctor". He tapped the doctor's left shoulders.

"Thank you sir, It is our pleasure"

"Where do you keep this patient?"

"Over the experimental section sir"

"Seems good how you have different rooms here." they both chuckled. "Continue the work doctor, we don't want to lose this chance of success." He winked.

As Carlos handled the papers back to the Doctor, a loud shriek of alarm thundered followed by the fast blaring of red lights. The laboratory staff paused from their work and stood motionless, exchanging glares.

"What the fuck is wrong Doc?" asked Carlos as he looked left and right, confused.

"Patient on loose. Patient on loose" announced the speakers. Everyone ducked and have taken the tables for a cover, as well as the doctor and Carlos.

"Goddammit! I thought the whole laboratory's about to explode or be crushed by an earthquake or eaten by a fire. I could have an heart attack there. Why the panic?" Carlos asked.

The doctor looked straight at the doctor's eyes with a frustrating glare.

"Patient number three has escaped the pod."

The guards came to get Carlos and the doctor to safety, but Carlos hesitated to leave and hopes to answer his rhetoric curiosity about the sudden panic of the patient's loose. The guards led the doctor and Carlos towards the experimental hallway. They carefully and silently crept. The guards blocked the entrance of the experimental room, with their taser guns raised and ready to shoot.

"I thought you said that it was a danger-free experiment?" Carlos asked, whispering.

"It was at first, but turns out it isn't"

"But why the need of guns for such one harmless and weak patient?"

A loud roar burst from the room like of a lion but as strong as the thunder. The walls released a tiny vibration from the roar. Several roars came and it was like a cry of war, of desperation and revenge. It sounded like it was ready to take on whoever blocks its way of escape. The roars came louder and more daunting than the last. It echoed along the hallway and throughout the lobby. The first set of the guards went inside the room. Carlos had his keen eyes on the entrance as lights and sounds triggered by the taser reflected over the metal walls of the room. The loud roaring intensifies and there were sounds of thuds as the sounds of the triggered taser guns continued. A minute of thuds and electric shocks, and one of the guards burst out of the room and bounced into the metal wall. It was like something of a titan-like strength have thrown the guard out of the room like a light paper-like rag doll. Then another guard was thrown over like a piece of paper, and then the tasering stopped. A loud haunting roar thundered again, and the second set of guards stood on guard.

"What are you experimenting doctor? a monster?" Carlos nervously asked.

The doctor pulled out his radio and commanded all the guards to block the hallway and never let the patient reach the lobby. The second set of guards went inside the room and the same rambling sound continued. Carlos took off his lab coat and wiped his sweats by it. The third set of the guards joined the attack, leaving the doctor and Carlos with five guards covering them. It didn't take it much longer for the unknown thing to knock the second and the third set of the guards. The room lay quiet and still. Loud thumps and heavy breathing were the only sounds breaking the grim silence of the room. The guards took step backwards as the shadow of the thing illuminated along the entrance as it walks slowly towards it, then it stopped. The shadow stood there motionless on the entrance and never moved for five seconds. Then, it took a deep heavy breathe and quickly burst out the room in a flash, bulldozing everyone on its path like some weightless puppets. The remaining guards and the doctor followed the unknown creature into the lobby.

Carlos stood frozen. There he saw the huge beast. A creature he have never set an eye on. It was like a human, but it was not a human. It was a beast. A large one with thick furs coming out at the back of its spine. The creature has the hands of man but instead of nails, it has a fearful sight of a claw as huge as of a bear's. Its green eyelids flashed in anger and its huge lower fangs came out exposed. Its legs were of a wolf but its body was a stature of a man but larger, so much that the stretches of its veins and muscles were exposed. Dark spots have covered half of its wicked face.

Carlos stood in awe and trembled at the sight of the creature. Its growls carries with it a message of chaos to all that hears it, and every time it roars, volumes of dense saliva comes out from its mouth, and hangs on its large fangs, slowly dripping into the ground.

The doctor stretched put his smile as if it was the greatest moment of his life. There was awe in his eyes, but there was also fear.

"What is that doctor?" Carlos asked.

"That's ..." the doctor chuckled. "... patient number three"

The doctor rejoiced silently over the creature for a minute as Carlos stared at it in frustration. Then he pulled out his radio and ran to take cover behind a huge post.

"Get all units into the entrance and every opening. Do not let the creature reach the face of sunlight and touch the winds. Move!" he ordered.

"And why is that?" Carlos asked.

"Will explain everything sir as soon as all of this is over."

The lab workers geared up for defense to help and they were encircling the patient, together with present guards. Taser guns were shot everywhere in the room. The lights danced like a carnival fire works presentation, yet all the taser bullets can not even get it through the patient's skin but only bounces back the moment it reached its skin. Taser guns were useless for the loose patient. The patient roared continuously, but it was not because of pain but it was a chant of war cry, a taunt for more trouble and chaos. It started to fling its huge arms around, countering the taser bullets flying around it. The wreckage of the laboratory worsens as the creature started throwing off people into walls and glasses, and throwing laboratory equipment everywhere.

While in the midst of frenzy, the patient saw the entrance door of the laboratory. It started to sprint towards it, charging its titan-like body towards the thick metal door, but the force and the mass of his body was not enough to destroy it. The patient was now cornered along the entrance hallway. Everyone was shooting their taser guns on him, and no bullets have missed the large body of the patient. He turned around and faced the small and weak humans shooting their toy guns at him. The bullets now started to hurt him as he begun to show expressions of pain. He slowly walked towards the guards who are taking steps backward every time he takes a slow step forward. He was certain that the bullets will never penetrate his skin yet suddenly, a bullet went straight right into his eye. The pain was excruciating. He gave out a strong roar again. He was not taunting anymore, it was now his time to strike.

The pain he felt in his eye fed him more strength as he started to walk faster and then sprinted and jumped over the desk in the middle of the lobby. The desk crushed under its heavy body. Then he lowered his head and his body, he was gathering all the strength he needs for his next action. Instead of picking guards and throwing them off, he gave out the loudest roar that broke every glass inside the laboratory and stopped everyone from firing their guns to cover their ears, then charged with great enthusiasm towards the entrance door again. The door burst open as he finished it off with a heavy punch. The patient was standing outside the laboratory, with the sun kissing the skin of his face and the winds singing upon his ears and caressing his scales.

"Shoot it with a real gun already!" Carlos exclaimed.

"No! We'll lose all the progress of the experiment." the doctor replied.

"No shit!" Carlos took out a gun from his belt holster and aimed it at the patient roaring in frenzy.

"Go to hell!"

But before he was about to pull the trigger, the patient fell on its knees then laid on the ground. Its thick furs fell off. Its body slowly shrinking. Its claws turned into dirty nails. The green eyes became normal blue. The large fangs shrunk and the wolf-like legs transformed into human legs. Its whole stature turned completely human, laying o the ground - weak, naked and breathing slowly.

The guards took the patient inside the laboratory on a stretcher, and came walking behind the shooting, was a young man dressed in white plain shirt and cargo pants. His black glasses glinted under the sun and the clouds reflected on his steel-toed boots. The man was Roberto Flores, an ex-military and one of the best there is.

"Perfect timing, Flores. Thought I had to buy a set of bullets again." Carlos greeted.

"A pleasure"

"How did you shut that monster down?" The doctor asked, confused.

"Tranquilizers" Flores replied and raised his gun having a sharp lead on its bullet hole. "Dangerous little things." he continued.

"Now, tell me doctor. Who the fuck asked you to raise a monster?" Carlos softly asked.

"Come. I have something to show you"

They all started to walk inside the laboratory.
