Chapter 4: Chapter 4

A warm breeze brushed Kylo's inky black hair from his face as he tried (for the fifth time) to mount Amelita. The Noxii wasn't making it easy for him.

I had my back against a nearby tree, chuckling when he lost his grip and tumbled over. I knew it wasn't necessarily the easiest thing, but I didn't remember it being that difficult the first few times. Amelita seemed to be enjoying his efforts.

"Are you just going to stand there and laugh at me?" Kylo barked. I shifted to look directly in his eyes. It had been so long since I'd talked to someone, looked at a real person with my own eyes. It was comforting, oddly enough. Even if just the day before he had me strapped to a chair, sifting through my entire life.

I didn't realize I had been staring until he stalked up to me, leaving Amelita to roll around in the dirt playfully.

I looked up at him. Our eyes met for a moment, neither of us daring to say a thing. His eyes searched my face, but I'm not sure what he was looking for or if he found it.

My lips twitched into a smirk. "Are you trying to intimidate me?"

"I've done it before, I can do it again."

"Is that a threat, Ren?" I growled. I felt the mood of the conversation shift to something more sinister, so I decided to cut it short.

I shoved past him and mounted Amelita with ease, thanking the stars that I didn't make a fool of myself by falling off.

The sound of a fiery red lightsaber echoed throughout the forest as Amelita bounded towards the ship that I now had to call home.

I thought I had begun to make progress with him, everything was fine until I got cocky. It was my fault he lost his temper.

Even then, he should have better control over his raging emotions. It wasn't entirely my fault that he was sensitive to the slightest instigation.

I decided then that I would let him find his way out of the forest, he didn't deserve an apology. I had better things to do.

Like train.

Except for the fact that I had just ditched my trainer in the middle of nowhere with no reliable way out. Just my luck.

Amelita skidded to a halt at the sight of the ship, and I made quick work of dismounting. Before leaving her, though, I asked her to do a small favor.

I really hope she understood me. My training really depended on it.

A few hours had passed before I saw Kylo again. He was back in his uniform, mask on and intimidating as ever. I paid him no mind as I grabbed a quick dinner and returned to what I could now call my quarters.

The room was spacious, much nicer than what I had originally. A large bed was on one wall and across from it was a dresser. A small door next to the dresser led to a small bathroom.

I was glad to have some privacy in this place. Yet, a small part of me wished to share all of this with someone else.

What I needed was a friend, of sorts. But first, I needed to eat my dinner before it got cold.

I sat at the edge of the bed, spooning the odd goop into my mouth and swallowing before I could taste it. I had no interest in knowing where it came from or what it was. I just needed food.

I finished it quickly and set the empty bowl on my dresser, deciding to take a look at what was inside.

I tugged at one of the drawers, which revealed an endless abyss of black shirts. I didn't doubt that I would find the same thing in the other drawers, so I closed it and returned to my bed.

I considered the bed my haven. It was a definite upgrade from the handmade cot I had previously. The sheer size of it was already baffling, but the comfort was impressive.

I tucked myself deep under the sheets, nearly covering my face, and closed my eyes. I could finally relax after twelve years of fending for myself. Finally, I could get a break.

I ignored the searing pain in my back as I rolled onto my side. I was exhausted from everything that had happened. I shimmied even deeper into the covers and began to doze off when I heard the door to my room open.

I made no effort to move. Didn't even shift when I felt someone sit next to my leg on the edge of the bed. I knew who it was, and I knew that I didn't feel like talking to him.

We sat in silence. I refused to even look at him. He wanted to tell me something, I knew that, but I didn't care enough to know.

Kylo let out a shaky breath and finally spoke.

"Thank you for sending your Noxii back for me."

I grunted in response, digging deeper into the sheets. The apology was forced, I didn't need to see him to know. He stayed silent for another moment, uncomfortably shifting around.

"If you need to say something, just say it." My voice was muffled, but he heard me well enough.

"I— Training starts tomorrow at six, don't be late."

Odd, I didn't expect Kylo Ren of all people to stumble over his words. I peeked over the edge of the blanket to see Kylo sitting awkwardly at the foot of the bed, his hands curled up in fists in his lap. He was a very confusing man. One minute he's laughing with you, the next he's seconds from killing you. I didn't want to know where his childhood went wrong, so I tucked myself back under the covers and waited for him to leave before drifting off into a fitful sleep.
