Chapter 4: Chapter 4

The flames of war had descended on my village...my once quiet and peaceful home transformed into a battlefield and the inhabitants either dead or in hiding. This battle came as a stark realisation that this world was one built of the back of conflict and that this green grass only grew from the red dirt left by the blood of the men who died on the fields of battle before and like the past the fields today will be stained with blood once again as both the armies met as the lines of horseman tore into the lines of infantry, and towards me as they came closer too me I saw the flags of the enemy army...The Hes.

A nation beside us in this country divided, a nation built on military power and a singular drive to unite the country under their new ruler, their soldiers unlike ours are like forged steel; tempered and sharpened to a fine blade there was no comparison to the barely trained rabble of our nation, they are a military, a well trained and highly disciplined one at that with everyone where as the Baron's men in comparison are a rabble armed with farming tools with even the luckiest donning armour from a by-gone age and a word rusted so much that no matter how many passes over the grindstone the dull edge would not sharpen.

Soon after I heard the call of the cavalry horn and then as I looked up at the lines of the well armoured enemies, I saw a sight that chilled me to the core a plume of dust rising as the sound of hooves beating the once vibrant and green grass to a mulch beneath them a loud cry from the ranks beside me shook me "CAVALRY! SHIELDS FORWARDS!" I raised my shield and peeked over only to see a sight that pushed my sanity to the brink of collapse a Hessian Horseman riding a steed as big as a wagon and carrying a cavalry axe aimed towards my head.

I barely moved aside fast enough to evade the axe which found itself buried in the poor soul behind me raising them from floor as the horseman passed by.

I watched on in astonishment as just one Horseman was able to push this far into the Baron's lines, unable to comprehend the damage that would be wrought by an army of these men.

I looked at the body of the man hit by the axe and noticed the sword lay there beside him still gripped in his hand as he lay there sprawled on the ground I prayed it from his hand and lifted it like my father taught me hoping to put up more of a resistance then what I would with a farm tool and hope, following the charge of the Hessian Cavalry the well armed soldiers of Hes descended on us and the chaos began blood and steel descended on us as hell followed I did my best to avoid the most part of the chaos as I saw a lone Hessian soldier separated from the others and fighting off two of the Baron's men like they are children attacking an adult.

I approached quietly and used all the strength I have which is by no small means weak after all I have worked the fields everyday of my life to bring the blade down on the Hessian soldier whilst he was distracted in an attempt to bury it in his shoulder hoping that was enough to end him however the chain mail gambeson reduced the blow slightly creating a superficial wound that only lowered his combat strength slightly but had unfortunately now revealed me to him as he brought himself full circle to face me and using the blunt of his axe knocking me aside and on to the floor as my head drowned in pain he cut the other men down as if a rage had taken him with his injury, I barely managed to stand again and this time I pushed forward with the sword in hand and pushed it as deep into his back as I could pushing him to the ground as I fell on top of him and in a daze of fury and pain lift myself off him and picked up the axe as it was a weapon that does not require training but force and with enough would cut through shields and armour like a knife through butter and picked up a half destroyed shield that looked like loose planks that are barely bound together anymore and moved forwards on a new path one that would bring me to be a man of standing who was known from the borders of the Northern land of Alba all the way to the highlands and marshes of Cymru. A story that had brought you all here today.
