Chapter 279: Thank you

Without meaning to, Ying Yue shook her head. The man looked at her with a face full of sadness and concern, and feeling embarrassed, she put up the blanket over her head and dived down the bed as she waited for him to leave. She stayed still, unmoving. However, there were no sounds that signaled the man's exit. What was he still doing there?

"I w-want to be alone," she stammered.

Her declaration of independence was only met with silence. It took another minute before the man spoke up. "As you already know, my name is Xu Feng. But the people back at the agency call me Big Boss."

She frowned. She didn't want some small talk right now.

"You can call me by either one."

Ying Yue didn't reply. She only secretly wished for him to leave so she could wallow in her despair. She was still grieving the loss of her only family left – her brother. And she didn't have much of an appetite to eat anything.

There was a clinking sound of the tray being placed at the bedside table. "Please eat. I won't force you to come out of the room, but I hope you'll eat some food. Ying Shen wouldn't want to see you starving. He'd be disappointed in the both of us if he knew you weren't getting food in that tiny stomach."

She flinched.

Footsteps could be heard disappearing towards the door, and on a whim, Ying Yue pulled the covers away and sat up with a start, looking at Big Boss' retreating back. "T-thank you, Big Boss..."

He stopped when he reached the door and turned around to meet her eyes. "You're welcome." And then after a while, he added, "You've done so well these last couple of years. Ying Shen would be proud, I'm sure."

Her face scrunched up into one of confusion. Done well? Done well in what? She'd only been in school before she lost her brother. What was this man talking about? "Why are you so sure?"

"Because I'm proud of you, shadow fox."

"Huh?"

"I hope you live well in the present."

Ying Yue blinked her eyes, and then the room spun around, making her head ache – forcing her to close her eyes as she screamed in pain.

She felt the blanket slide off her and the bed disappeared from under her, and when she opened her eyes again, she was at the Juyan training facility, sitting down on a bench at the firing range, waiting for her turn. There were a few other trainees lounging around like she was, though their faces seemed kinda blurry to her.

Did she fall asleep just now? She felt like she was dreaming just a short while ago – but about what, she wasn't sure anymore. Dreaming about something important and then forgetting it completely when you woke up – that happened a lot, right?

"Hey, hey, everyone, line up already!"

The firing range trainer blew on his whistle, making everyone jump from their seats and rush to their respective cubicles. Ying Yue did the same. As usual, there was a dismantled gun on the cubicle, which they were supposed to quickly assemble in record time before using it to shoot the target a couple of times.

"Girl in the last cubicle, step out! Hey, you listening?"

Ying Yue felt a tap on her shoulder and came face to face with the trainer.

"Step out. Did you wreck a gadget during training? Mo Yiling's paging you to his office."

She blinked repeatedly. Mo Yiling? For some inexplicable reason, she felt weird hearing that name. It was as if she was supposed to remember something important about that name, like he'd done something, but she couldn't pinpoint what it was. "Oh, okay. I'll go."

When she reached the office of Mo Yiling, she knocked and opened the door to see him there with his fingers flying fast all over the keyboard. He was in deep concentration and his eyes were glued to the computer monitor. The familiar sight somehow made her feel something in between longing and disappointment. She didn't know why she felt that way, though. Wasn't Mo Yiling always good to her?

Ying Yue hesitated at the door.

"What are you doing standing there, shadow fox? Get in."
