Chapter 3: The Test: Part 1

Seth walked in silence, despite Anna's many attempts to start a conversation with him. He was in his head, completely numb to the outside world. The only thing he was aware of was Anna walking next to him.

Family is very important to Seth. He's quite antisocial, so his big sister was his only friend until he turned 13 and he made a couple of real friends. Sometimes he wished he was more like his sister, she could strike up a conversation with anyone.

When they finally arrived at their house, Seth snapped himself out of the trance he was in. He looked at the house. It was nothing special, it was white with a small chimney, decent sized lawn, and a black door, the same as all the other houses.

Seth's mom and dad had always wanted to change the paint but, sadly, it was against the law to make any changes to the outside of the house. Seth always thought that was one of the stupidest laws ever. In his opinion people should be able to change their house, if they want to.

"Seth, stop standing out there and get inside. You need to get ready" called his mom.

Once again snapping himself out of his trance he walked inside and headed to his room. On the his bed lay a uniform, one that he was to wear to the sorting. It wasn't anything flashy but it was still professional attire, a black suit with black dress shoes and a gold star pin, which signified he was becoming an adult and joining their level of the society.

He walked to the bathroom, closed the door, and stripped off his shirt. He had a bruise on his stomach, where Gregory actually managed to land a hit. He guessed that it was due to his adrenaline rush, that he didn't feel it.

As he looked at himself in the mirror he started counting his scars, cuts, scrapes, and bruises. Some of them from fighting, some were accidents, some were on purpose. He counted one scar and six bruises.

He checked the time on his watch and saw that it was 12:00 pm. He needed to leave in half an hour, which meant no more admiring himself. He stripped down and got in the shower. After he finished, he dried off, wrapped himself in a towel, and walked to his room.

He changed into the suit and combed his hair. He just finished putting on his shoes, when his dad walked in.

"Hey son, you ready?" his dad asked, while smiling.

"Yeah, just give me a second. I just need to put the pin on" replied Seth, picking up the pin and attaching it to his suit. He looked at himself in his mirror, one last time. Then he turned and followed his dad down stairs.

He noticed that his dad was dressed up too. When he got down stairs he saw his mom and his sister both dressed up. They all seemed to be more excited about this than he was. Truth be told, he wasn't all too excited.

They all walked together, towards "The Arena" or at least that's what everyone called it. It was where you would test for your faction. When they arrived Seth waved goodbye to his family and went to the exam taker's entrance. He glimpsed a peek at his dad, who gave him a nod and a thumbs up, then he walked inside.
