Chapter 2: In The Beginning

Born in a world similar to ours, Magnus Charles Licinius was birthed on September 8th. He was born into a middle class family living in the suburbs of a large city in the country known as the United Provinces of Columbia.

This country was a world superpower, rising up from the forge of revolution against their dictators. The United Provinces of Columbia was named after its discoverer, Christian Columbus, who was the first man known to step on the mainland of the New World.

This new country greatly outpaced those countries that had colonized it after winning its war for independence. The UPC had been in several wars after that, the worst being a civil war over slavery, but had never seen defeat. After the UPC became the world's leading superpower, Europa broke out into a fierce war, known as the Great War. This changed Magnus' life forever, even though he was not even born yet.

Magnus' father died in the Great War before Magnus was old enough to remember him. Magnus' mother had remarried and remained a housewife, supporting Magnus' family in the home. Magnus had one brother, Julius, and Magnus' new dad also had had children, increasing his sibling count by four.

Magnus was a rather withdrawn child, rarely interacting with his classmates. He, however, did manage to make one friend in middle school, who just so happened to be a girl. Christopher, his step-sibling who was in the same class as Magnus, would always recount to the family Magnus and the girl's awkward interactions, leading the rest of the siblings to tease him.

Magnus, though rather withdrawn, wasn't rude or mean. He would be nice to those he liked and ignored those he didn't, which tended to be most of everyone. Magnus did make other friends besides that girl. In high school he had made three other friends who were boys. Around these boys he would let loose. He had interactions with them outside of school, unlike that of the girl.

Magnus never really associated with anyone else besides that girl and his posse all the way through high school. He lived contently, enjoying getting into play fights with his siblings and found his life was greatly blessed. However, despite cherishing his time with his three other friends, he was plagued by boredom on an existential level.

Magnus graduated high school and got a job rather than going to college, for he didn't have enough money too. so, rather than laying around all day, he got a job at a barber shop. All was well as he earned his weekly wage.

Suddenly, the world was under tension. It was familiar to those older than Magnus. To his mother, it had only seemed like yesterday that she got the telegram saying that her husband was dead. His stepfather got more and more anxious every day. The world was going to break out into a great war. Again.

For the first time in his life, Magnus felt truly excited. He didn't know what the future held now. No one did.

"Then, one day, our Nation was bombed. We were at war with the Empire of Oyashima. The next day, we were also at war with the New Roman Empire and the Third Deutschland Reich."

The child asked, "then what happened?", completely absorbed in Magnus' story.

Magnus replied, "Then, at twenty three years of age, I was conscripted into the UPC army."
