Chapter 32: [Sensory Seahawk Feather]
"Booom!"
Dave and Jet were flung back by the force of their attacks.
The world around Dave spun and he didn't know where up or down was. The only thing he knew was where his bubbles were.
The connection created through mana wasn't that weak after all. He hastily manipulated the bubble he used as a launcher to become as soft as a cushion and catch him before he hit a rock or anything else hard enough to break his bones.
Lying in the cushion-like bubble he felt a stinging pain coming from his right fist.
"So this happens if you over strengthen your body. There seems to be a point where you start damaging yourself. If that weren't the case I could pretty much spin in a circle and smash hundreds of times through a single [Enhancement Bubble] until even the strongest person on earth couldn't parry my attack."
Luckily Dave didn't try this, otherwise, it wasn't unrealistic that his fist could have been smashed into smithereens and who knew if someone would be able to recreate or repair a limb that looked like a melon overrun by a train.
After checking his own situation Dave finally let his focus return to the quest.
'Where is Jet?'
Dave ran to the cliff and looked down. A bird was floating on the surface of the water. Its head hanging powerlessly underwater.
"Shit, I didn't kill him, did I?" Shouted Dave with regret and jumped from the mountain cliff.
'Why didn't he evade my attack if he couldn't withstand the force. Why force yourself to die like this?' Dave knew why. It was the same reason why he didn't evade the attack of Jet. Telling the truth both of them didn't have the ability yet to measure their enemy's power level in a way that would allow them to predetermine the outcome.
Dave simply trusted his abilities and the fact that he was up until now unequaled in attack power. In contrast to Jet, he even broke through the [Strenght] Limit. Jet was nearly the same. He didn't meet before today someone, who could keep up with his power, and he didn't know, which Limits or how many Dave broke through.
Telling the truth, he was kind of conceited by his position as the crown prince and never put Dave in his eyes. On top of that, in his position, he couldn't take a step back. Stepping back would have been the same as admitting that he was inferior to Dave.
Dave put on the [Apprentice Hero's Cape] and used its effect to slow his fall just before he hit the water.
Using his bubble control he swiftly created a disc under his feet before he could sink and created another bubble that lifted Jet out of the water.
Dave examined him and to his relief discovered that Jet didn't kick the bucket yet.
He took a red bottle from his belt and opened it with utmost care to not spill its contents.
Dave placed the bottle at Jet's beak and poured a strawberry colored liquid in his mouth. It had a refreshing smell to it.
"Damn. I got this as a reward for an A grade quest and didn't even have the chance to test it myself." Complained Dave.
He levitated the bubble with the still unconscious Jet to the shore and let him lie there.
'I don't know if this is enough to save him. I should probably end this quest as soon as possible. That way, his people will have a chance to look after him.'
Dave was deeply concerned with Jet's well-being. It wasn't because he feared losing the chance to get him as his mount. Telling the truth if he thought it through again then it wasn't a good idea and not practicable. It was just the thought of a guy, who was for many years to invested in games to see reality.
At first, he didn't perceive Jet on the same level as a human being. If he thought back to it then this was basically the reason he had no problem killing the Lightning Rabbit and the King Cobra.
'Was I to hasty back then? I mean killing that snake was probably the right thing but that rabbit didn't really intend to kill me. I never thought of it as something similar to a human being because it couldn't talk.' Dave felt regret.
What changed Dave's perception was nothing less than the will Jet conveyed to Dave when they exchanged the blow.
Dave could see himself in Jet and understood the reason for what he did and how he acted. He didn't know yet what was the reason for Jet, the King Cobra, Taurin, and of course, the Lightning Rabbit to become his Limit Breaking Quest examiners but he decided he would ask Taurin the next time they met.
Perceiving Taurin as something similar to a human was easy for Dave since, in contrast to the other monsters, he had at least some human features.
"I should search for the Crystal Barracuda, Jet dropped during our exchange. If I am lucky it only fell a few meters down and is still somewhere at the ledge.
Dave accelerated in the sky using another bubble disc and activated his [Enhancement Bubble] to increase his eyesight.
Scanning the cliff for the fish, Dave found it on a small rock a few meters over the water surface.
"Lucky!"
Dave sent a bubble down to retrieve the fish and deliver it to the mountain peak. While he did that he simultaneously searched for more Crystal Barracudas.
"Where are you fishies? Fishies, Fishies, Fishies." Sang Dave as if it would help him catch another one. He searched for 5 minutes before he discovered one. Obviously, he wasn't as skilled as Jet in catching fish.
He transported this one as well to the top with a bubble and searched for another 3 minutes to find the third one, which he delivered the same way.
'Wait, I have to leave him a message.' thought Dave. 'But how? Most things will dissolve after we disappear from here.' Dave contemplated this question for quite some time and only managed to come up with a single bad solution.
He took his [Apprentice Hero's Cape] and tied it loosely around Jet's neck. Scratching his fingertip with a sharp rock he found, he used his own blood to write on the cape.
'Forget the bet. Let's be friends the next time we meet. I need the cape back but inside is a present rolled in for you.'
That's right. Dave wanted to build a good relationship with Jet and decided to invest in this. He gave him the King Cobra Essence. It might be a momentary loss for Dave but he felt that this was a great future investment.
Maybe, just maybe, this small present would allow him to not only befriend Jet but his whole tribe.
Wouldn't it have been worse the price then?
After finishing this Dave moved the bubble encompassing the thrid Crystal Barracuda and let it drop the fish on the mountain peak.
Promptly a window showed up in front of Dave.
[Congratulation]

[Sensory Seahawk Feather]: This feather shows all monsters that you are an official friend of the Sensory Seahawk tribe.
Effect: Most monsters below rank 3 won't attack you if you don't provoke them.]
While the lake and the mountain around Dave dissolved he sent a last look in Jet's direction before he opened his eyes again in the real world.
"Explain to me why you would do that!" An angry Ayano was centimeters away from his face.
Dave gulped.
"Hello, nice to see you. I feel a little hungry. Let's grab something to eat at Kowalski's..." Before Dave could finish his sentence Ayano smacked him right on his head with a mana empowered fist creating a red bump.
"Ahhh. Please, mercy. I broke the limit no reason to..." Another smack on his head made him shut up.
"Who cares about that damn quest? If you die, it doesn't matter anymore that you broke through all these limits!"
Before Ayano could smack Dave a third time, Anna stopped her.
"He is alright. Let's go grab something to eat and talk. If we go to Kowalski's I can check out if everything is okay at my place."
