Chapter 18: My Husband's Lover (17)
I stopped dragging Guoliang when we were far from Guowei and Liqin. I crossed my arms and asked, "Do you want to die?"
"What makes you think that? I certainly do not want to die."
"Your actions told me you want to die."
"What did I do?"
"Are you stupid or stupid? You told them about it."
"You do not to stress over it. You have nothing to lose. It is your friend's story, not yours."
I really, really, really wanted to strangle Guoliang. He clearly heard me telling Liqin to go out because it was just between us. It took great control to stop myself from doing it. Because I was really frustrated, I stepped on his foot.
"You could have done it harder like this," he said while stepping on my foot.
"Guoliang!"
"I was just helping you. You need to express your anger better."
"I'm really going to kill you," I said as I ran towards him to strangle him by the neck.
He took my hand and flung them around. "How are you going to kill me if you are this weak?"
"Guoliang!"
He laughed then let go of my hands. "Okay, okay. Before you kill me, let me tell you my answer first." He beckoned me to come closer and I did. "You like him," he whispered.
"What do you mean I like him? I told you it's my friend's story."
"Right, your friend. Then your friend likes her best friend. But the word like is an understatement. Love would be more appropriate. No one does things she does if there is no love."
"But she is married."
"Do you really think that marriage is enough of a reason to say that she does not love him?"
I shook my head.
"There you have it," he said. "She loves him. Marriage does not always guarantee love. It is just a ceremony. You do not necessarily need to have love to go through this."
"But don't you ask something like do you love this person enough to marry him or whatever? Loving then is a necessity."
"Yes, we ask that question. But how do you know that yes really means yes?"
"Wow. Guoliang, you're very smart."
"You do not need to state the obvious."
"And you're also very arrogant."
"Thank you very much. So can we go back now? I have not touched my food. My stomach is protesting."
After breakfast, I went back to my tent. I was thinking about what Guoliang said. What he said was true. Yanyu and Guowei were married to each other, but Guowei's heart belonged to someone else. Yanyu, on the other hand, gave her heart to Guowei. But how did these two friends grow apart? I had seen people with a close relationship who fell in love with the same person. But one chose to let go of her feelings because she valued their friendship. Yanyu and Liqin were very close. Surely, one of them would have given up for the sake of their friendship.
I was about to open and continue reading Yanyu's diary when Liqin suddenly entered my tent.
I rose up and asked, "Liqin, I know that you miss me but is it really this much? To the point that you can't bear to be away from me for more than a few minutes?" I put aside Yanyu's diary.
"I would love to speak sarcasm but I want to talk about something important." He sat down and asked, "Is it true?"
"True what?"
"What Guoliang said. Giving up one's favorite food and eating one's least favorite in every meal all for a friend?"
"It's true. It's my friend's story." I chuckled awkwardly.
He looked at me in the eye and said, "Thank you, Yanyu. I did not know how much you cared for me. Had I been stubborn, I would have lost someone who truly loved me. Thank you."
"A person as great as you only deserves to be loved this much. There is no need for you to thank me."
Why did I try to hide it? It was not like it was something bad. It was not Yanyu's secret, was it?
Liqin came closer and was about to hug me when Guowei suddenly entered. "The carriage is here," he said.
The two of us immediately moved away from and turned our backs on each other. It felt like we had been caught doing something bad. But it was not bad, was it? It was just two friends hugging each other.
