Chapter 2: Bonding

Having Zealous stuck with him for life? Jacob began pondering idea internally. He was thinking of the drawbacks and the positive outcomes this may lead for him.

The corner of Jacobs lips slowly curved upwards into a deep smile and his eyes started to sparkle. He decided that idea of having Zealous as his mentor could only reap benefits.

Jacob knew that when he approached the pentagram and that once he broke the barrier to hand Zealous the quill, ink, and parchment the demon would either kill him immediately or the demon was being truthful. With no risk there would be no reward. Jacob honestly felt the sincerity in the demons words so he felt that had no need to worry.

He promptly approached the pentagram and stared Zealous in the eyes for a moment. He took in the majestic sight of the demon and then committed. With confidence and gusto, Jacob reached across the threshold of the magical barrier and handed Zealous ink, quill, and parchment.

The demon sat on the ground and began to write; occasionally he would take pauses to dip the quill into the bottle of ink. After several minutes he was finished. At the end of writing, Zealous looked up and was deep in thought trying to see if he forgot anything.

After reviewing the spell he stood and held out the parchment for Jacob to take. His face became serious and he began to speak, "we will practice each word individually until you can say them without imperfections. Right now you do not need to know what they mean, only how to say them. Once you can speak them perfectly I will have you chant the spell and then I will do my part. In the future I will educate you on the actual language as learning it will pay dividends. Let us begin."

For a few hours Jacob practiced saying various words that were written on the parchment, the demon correcting him at every fault. Zealous was shocked that someone at such a young age could be so diligent and concentrate on such a mundane task for so long. The demon believed that there had to be a reason, an ulterior motive, as to why he was so dedicated and would take so many risks. It made him more intrigued wondering what it may be. Soon he would know, once the spell is complete he would know everything about the boy.

"I believe you are ready; you know the words, now you need to simply concentrate and chant the spell. As you are chanting the spell I will do my part and the bonding will happen. It will not be instant, once I have finished I will turn back into smoke and travel into you. You must keep the chant going as you absorb the smoke. Once you have absorbed all of the smoke you will fall unconscious for a brief moment. By the time you awake the spell will be complete and we will be able to communicate with each other. If you have no questions then start when you want." said Zealous

Jacob had a couple questions so he did not start right away. He looked up from the parchment to Zealous and asked, "Will I feel anything upon completion of the spell? Also, you mentioned that I will receive some of your power, will this happen right away or cause me any issues?"

Zealous nodded as he spoke and replied, "Yes, yes, both are good questions. You will only feel like you are breathing dense air as I travel into you. As far as power goes, you will not have it right away. It is something that happens over time that you must nurture and develop."

The demon looked at him for a couple of seconds after speaking then commanded, "You are ready so begin."

Jacob took a deep breath and slowly exhaled, controlling his breathing as he cleared his mind. In a concentrated state he looked down at the parchment.

Jacob read the parchment aloud and began to chant "Jab'rah h'wren… isk nu do'r… mei isk do'r mei…"

Zealous stood upright and spoke his part. The demon's words came out like a song and reverberated throughout the room. Immediately after the demon finished, his physical body started to fade. His body seemed to flicker out of existence and slowly an after image of him was all that remained; the demon materialized into smoke. The smoke began to swirl and the after image disappeared. It slowly traveled towards Jacob. Once directly in front of him the smoked paused and then moved swiftly into Jacobs's mouth and nose causing him to momentarily lose consciousness.

The spell was complete. Jacob felt no different. He looked at the clock and realized it was already fairly late. It was a few minutes past midnight and he needed to get everything from the ritual cleaned up and get back to his room.

Quickly Jacob began to take the candles and dispose of them and left one burning. Using a knife he grabbed from the table, Jacob started to scratch out the symbols he earlier engraved into the wood. The only evidence left in the room that showed he was there were the pentagram made of blood, the knife scratch marks, along with the parchment that Zealous wrote on.

Jacob decided it was best to burn the parchment so he walked over to the table and positioned it over the candle. Within a few seconds the parchment engulfed in flames and turned to ashes. Thanks to hindsight he brought a glass of water and a wash cloth to remove the blood. He quickly scrubbed the floor and within an hour he had the room spotless.

Realizing there was not much more he could do, Jacob opened the door and quickly peeked left and right to ensure no one was there and would see him leaving the room. Noticing that no one was there he quickly left the room and shut the door. Now in a hallway, Jacob silently snuck in the direction of his quarters. After several turns he appeared before a set of stairs. Off to each side sat a matching statue of mythical creatures. He pushed on and continued up the set of stairs. Once he made a few more turns and he made it to his room.

Unlocking the door, he quickly went inside and locked it. The room was small and had just enough space for his essential items. There was his bed, a dresser, an end table that doubled as a miniature bookshelf, and a desk for his studies. The desk housed a candle, various pieces of parchment that were neatly stacked, quills, and an assortment of ink. Jacob realized he was extremely exhausted not only from it being so late in the night but also because he used more magic then he ever had. He frowned because he knew he had to get up in only a few hours. Moving to his bed, Jacob quickly got under his blankets and went into a deep slumber
