Chapter 3: A Little Girl Named Volen (Part II)

Raum returned back to the meat stall with Volen, ordering only for her, "What did your grandma thought you when she was still alive?"

"She thought me how to read and write, and loves to tell me bedtime stories about the first heroes and about a queen who lives on the far west side", she ate a slice of a meatball. "That is the only thing she remembered."

"What do you know about the academies the first heroes created?" he was curious if she knew about the academies, it would save him lot of time than explaining about the academies.

"Yes, it was created for anyone who is willing to become a hero. The direct bloodline from the first heroes inherited the academies and continued to train heroes".

He was relieved when he heard her explanation. "Did your grandma tried to bring you to the academy?"

"Young sage, you aren't planning to enroll her on the academy, right?" the owner was listening to their conversation but hearing the question he was can't help but to interfere them. "They won't allow the poor to become heroes now for free, not like the old times. Even if a poor family could afford to pay, they still won't because they think that it is only for the elites".

"What do you think I am? I'm a sage that guides heroes and academies can't refuse a candidate from a sage", Raum answered him with a serious tone, but he then smiled cheerfully, "After all it was one of the contract academies agreed, right old man?"

"Y-yeah… you're a sage after all", the owner laughed nervously, "How about this… I'll treat both of you after your candidate graduate".

"Deal", Raum can't help to laugh loudly, "You're the best old man like the meatballs you sell". Thinking how he can eat all he want until he can't move.

After Raum and Volen left, the owner of the meat stall was relieved nothing bad happened. He took a meatball and threw it on the street. A hawk swooped down to eat it.

"The sage already found a candidate who will take the entrance exam too at your academy".

The hawk screeched before it flew.

They went to the forest outskirt of the city port. Raum wanted to learn Volen's magic and train her how to control it before the day of the exam. If she failed to control her magic he needed to wait for the next month.

"I want to test your magic type here. Can you remember anything before you got hit by a fireball and fainted?"

Volen was shocked and surprised at the same time knowing she have a magic and that she was hit by a fireball, she also totally forgot to ask him why some parts of her clothes got burnt. She shook her head for not remembering it. "I can only remember I was watching the heroes fighting, do I have really magic?"

"Yes, you're a mage, Volen. I tried to reach you but the fireball was quicker. As you can see you are not injured nor have a scar. You absorbed it and released it back. If my guess is correct, it wasn't the fireball itself that made you unconscious but the amplitude of the magic that was used to cast it".

"Amplitude?" Volen heard it for the first time and was clueless.

"Amplitude is the term of how strong the skill of the hero is, while skill is the ability of the hero. For instance I cast a fireball with low amplitude, it would only scorch the tree, and if I cast a fireball with high amplitude it can burn the tree. It depends on how high a mage can control their amplitude".

"How about my amplitude how high it is?", she was excited to hear his answer.

"I was baffled when I saw your magic was zero, but I was sure you deflected the fireball. You might be a specialist like me but it's a first time to see someone who has no amplitude to just absorb a magic".

"Specialist? Is that something where someone is unique?"

"Yes. Heroes have an assigned class. A total of six basic classes, controllers assist their allies, bruisers are short-ranged combatants who excel at both dealing damage and surviving damage, mages who typically casts magic to deal damage, bombardier are those who uses ranged weapons, assassins specializing in infiltrating enemy lines with their unrivaled mobility, and last tanks who engage enemies in front battles. While the specialists don't fit on a single class and are flexible switching class during battles from mage into tank and so on. You'll learn the subclasses on the academy".

Volen nodded and raised her hands, "If I'm a mage why can't I cast a magic? Shouldn't I be on tank that can absorb magic?"

"Good question, but you aren't a tank, they may deflect but they can only resist magic when directly hit and can't absorb it like you did. Which is why I want to try something", he gave her a pendant that has a symbol of a book and an eye above. "The pendant is connected to my pocket watch, it will show me the progress of your ability", he took out the pocket watch which has the same symbol on the pendant he gave. "This is the symbol of the sage association. A person not from the association won't understand what is written to secure any information leaks".

From his staff, a small red orb showed up that slowly floated towards Volen. "This is called the Origin. The energy from the environment is where skills of the hero come from. They only have one amplitude which cannot harm a person, but because you can absorb a magic, I want you to absorb it".

Volen tried to touch it but when she came close to the red small orb, it acted strangely. It bounced back and forth like there was a barrier around her. "Should this happen?" she asked while chasing the small red orb.

Raum was mystified from what was happening, he don't know what to explain to her, she can't absorb it like what she did with the fireball, does that mean she can't absorb origin but can absorb a magic or is it that she needs to absorb a magic directly to make it her own?

"Volen can you cast a magic that you have seen before? Can you cast your own magic", Raum queried.

"No I haven't seen a magic before, grandma always let me stay away when there is a fight between heroes, that was my first time seeing a fight between heroes, but I'll try to cast my own magic",

Volen stopped chasing the red small orb, "But how do I cast magic?"

Why would an old lady try to stop her watching heroes fighting each other? Did she know something about the little girl? Raum thought, but first he needs to find out behind Volen's unknown magic.

"Because you can't absorb an origin, maybe try to create your own origin first", Raum answered, even he knew it would be impossible to cast an origin because it comes from gathering energy from the surrounding.

He was astonished seeing Volen creating an origin of different colors blending each other. Origin colors indicates what nature it was like the red orb is a fire origin, other can absorb two to three origin but on her case it was all different. Magic flows in array but for her case it was all disorganize as if she disrupts the flow and creating her own flow.
