Chapter 47: An Interrogation of Wits and Control

I approached the two who were standing slightly outside the dinning hall, awaiting my arrival. I could tell by the looks on their faces that whatever they wanted me for, it wasn't good news.

It felt like I was a misbehaved kid who had done something wrong, got caught and am now walking the walk of shame to the principal's office. I could feel my anxiety heightened as both of them watched me with a stern demeanour.

"Morning" I called out with a smile as I made my final couple of steps.

"Morning," the two of them responded in unison. "You don't have to make such a look, your not in too much trouble."

Garrett is as straightforward as always, no beating around the bush.

I gulped because he confirmed that I was indeed in trouble for something.

Garrett was about to start talking but Sara beat him to it.

"What were you doing out of your room at night?"

Oh shit. How? I didn't see anyone when I used information network to scan the area. I did see some workers on the map but I had made sure they wouldn't see us.

"Oh and don't feign innocence. We have confirmation."

Someone did see us? Who?

"Well, I was hungry so I asked Loc to take me to the kitchens."

Garrett gave a swift nodded.

"He did confirm that. Keep going."

"I uh... we went into the kitchens and there were no cooks there so I made something myself..."

I felt my anxiety drop to the pits of my stomach as I said those last words... I knew as I said those words that I self incriminated myself.

"You know the rules, no leaving your room at night." Sara voice was stern and upfront.

I remember my time with her and how kind she was when she helped me but this, this feels different. It's as if she's disappointed with me...

"Sorry..."

"It's not that much of a big deal. Don't worry too much about it."

"Garrett!"

"Sara, lighten up a bit. Ryan, we came here not to apprehend you, whilst it's against the rules to leave your room, I tend to find that rule a bit controlling and besides Loc was there." Garrett glanced at Sara who was fuming.

Sara closed her eyes and took a deep breath and exhaled.

"This morning when the chefs came in to prepare the breakfast menu, they notice things were missing or out of place. A part time chef named Alrand who is a spacial mage had recreated the events that happened in the kitchen."

Shit, so this guy is like a security camera or something?

"Alrand skills are special, in that he can recreate things in absolute. His the go to guy if you wanted something to be recreated without having to do anything. Anyways, Alrand recreated the dishes you've made last night in the kitchens and well the chefs would like you to come by the kitchens when you have the chance. They want you to teach them how you made those dishes."

Eh?!

"I... I... but I can't cook..."

"Loc confirmed to us, that you can. He said and I quote,'it's the best grub he had since he's last visit back home.'"

Damn it Loc!

"The chefs also told us that the methods used are unknown to them. Just say yes so we can have breakfast..." Garrett's stomach growled and I could tell that he was eyeing the food that's still left on the dining hall.

"Sure..."

"Good! Now let's get in there before there's nothing left!"

"Not just yet."

The three of us turned our heads to see Faron standing beside us.

"Morning."

"Morning sir!" Sara spoke with a salute.

"Morning." Garrett greeted with his arm crossed.

"Morning..." I greeted normally.

Faron stared at me for a bit before turning his gaze to the other two, then back to me.

"It has been a somewhat eventful couple of days, hasn't it?" Faron said with a stiff smile.

"It sure has ha ha..." Garrett laughed awkwardly.

"Yes... Now then. A little birdie had told me something interesting the other day. Councillor Ezekiel, Minister Balius and his son was beaten by someone at the royal library. It seemed, the king's guard, Gunther Robin had an altercation with Ezekiel."

"Faron, I didn't know you for one to gossip." Garrett said in shock.

"I'm not. I came here to detain the otherworlder. He will now come with me."

"What?!" Garrett and Sara gasped.

"We the magic association have been tasked with the investigation and have found that this otherworlder has been connected to the incident somehow. We would like to ask this otherworlder some questions."

My eye's widened.

Two guys hidden under cloaks appeared and took hold of me. I could feel magic emitting out from their hands as they grasped their hands around my arms.

"You two better get in there before breakfast is over. The association thanked you two for the cooperation. Come, otherworlder. Interrogation awaits you."

In a flash, Garrett and Sara disappeared. The dining hall, disappeared. In place of the former, was now a small room with runes placed all around.

"Welcome to the truth chamber!" Faron exclaimed.

Truth chamber? More like a polygraph room... if the polygraph machine is the room itself...

My eyes could only wander so far without them noticing but I could only see three people including me in this room. Information network also told me same, which meant it was three to two hundred and forty one. The odds are in my favour, however, information network also told me that there is a high level of magic in this room.

"Seat him in the chair."

The two cloaked guys walked me to a chair and table in the middle of the room. One of the guys said 'sit' in a muffled voice and I had no choice but to oblige.

Many scenarios ran through my head. Plans of safety, plans of exits. One thing that concerned me was the fact that this place could cancel my energy or other methods of control but since I could still use information network meant that they don't have that type of constraint in place.

{They do. You're the exception. Information network is part of my design, I created it which meant that this type of magic can't affect it.}

Roha!

{Hush my champion. Don't let them control this interrogation. They don't actually know more than what they already told you. You have the upper hand.}

"Yah and we'll help too," my Otaku self exclaimed.

"Quiet, Faron is coming. We don't him to think we have schizophrenia," my logical self quipped.

Our eyes locked as he walked to the other seat on the opposite end of the table. He place his hands on the table and looked at me. He's eyes moved around in indication of the runes around me and tilted his head.

I raised my eyebrows in feign confusion. The runes were the first thing I saw, surely he knew that I knew it too. Maybe he thinks I shouldn't know it since I've technically only been here for less than a week and thought they were just decorations on the wall.

"Those are runes on the walls. They have already been activated. No lie could be told in here. No unauthorised spells could be used in here. This is an interrogation of information. No harm, no foul. I suggest you fully cooperate."

So this is like a polygraph test...

[Warning: high level spells has been activated.]

{Like I said, don't worry. The spells can't affect my system. Act the same as what you're doing now. Don't let him suspect that you know his hand.}

"Eh... okay? Sure you have my full cooperation."

"Good. Now then, what were you doing at the royal library at the time? I heard you were in a incident a day prior and should still be on the hospital bed at the time."

"I felt fine, so I decided to leave..."

"Oh? So the doctor didn't tell you to leave?"

"No..."

"Don't you have rules in your home world?"

"Yes."

"Are you a criminal in your home world?"

"No. I'm a teacher."

"Teacher. I see. What do you teach?"

What the fuck are all these questions?

{He's fishing for information about you. You can answer truthfully with these mundane questions since they are basic and are only asked to provide bait. Don't falter when he ask the more intense ones. Strip it to only a simple answer.}

I see...

"I teach FTV."

"FTV? What is that?"

"It's uh... shows? plays. Eh... People dress up and act on a platform... and such..."

"So your a performer."

"No, I teach my students on the art of it."

"I see. Now then back on to the main topic at hand. Since you're a teacher, don't teachers follow the rules?"

"Yes."

"Why did you break them?"

...

This really feels like I'm back in primary school getting interrogated by the Vice principal...

"Are these any questions even necessary?"

"Yes. Answer them truthfully."

I could tell that Faron was getting agitated. The problem with polygraphs is that it's easy to manipulate. If it's a machine in the real world then obviously bypassing the heart rate and minimising micro expressions is key. This however is a fucking room with magic involved. I hope the principle is the same for this room as the machine...

"I didn't break any rules. The nurse told me that she would check me later in my own room."

"Oh?"

His eyes started to glow only for a second before raising an eyebrow.

Oh shit... I shouldn't have mentioned the last part... fuck.

Faron started blankly as if to suggest that I should 'keep going'.

I hope I didn't fallen into one of his traps...

"She checked on me last night and that's it..."

"Why were you at the library? What is your relationship with Lavira Robin?"
