Chapter 2: Goodbye

It is a windy day, the sun is not yet fully up and the ground is still muddy from the rain last night.

I am just saying goodbye to my parents and my little sister.

It might be the last time I see them. About a week ago the military came to get people ready for the front line,

of course no one wanted to volunteer but that's what they were expecting so they forced to use the king's decree.

They took any man over the age of 16, I am 17 and should have been taken but my uncle, a former officer, could ask one of his former friends for a favour.

Of course he couldn't turn it away, if it was noticed, they would both be executed,

But he could still do a lot for me

So I don't have to go to the front, at least not yet,

i was assigned to the beast hunters, a unit that takes care of keeping the supply lines behind the front free of monsters.

the life expectancy of the soldiers was not long but as the saying goes a soldier at the front will never see the sunrise.

But with the Beast Hunters it looks better but the death rate is still enormous.

Anyway, I can already hear the engine of the car behind me, there is not much time left.

Alreon, wait. I've got food for you to take with you.

Told Antaia my mother

And handed me a little tin can with red flowers on it.

Don't eat it all at once, okay? And promise me you'll write letters, you hear? And please please take care of yourself and when you see your father tell him that I will pray for you both every day!

With tears in her eyes, Antaia was pushed away by my six year old sister Emeli, she clung to my leg so tightly that no more blood could get through.

Please don't go stammered she with tears in her eyes

who am I gonna play young lady and gentleman with when you're gone?

With Anton you could play

I retorted

No, he is stupid, he always wants to play the lady and I have to open the door ten times for him!

She answered back angrily. In the background I could see Mum smiling.

Then came a honk, I tried to remove my sister from my leg but she wouldn't let go.

NO!

She screamed

You can't leave!

In the background the driver starts honking impatiently.

I look back and see the old man at the wheel, bored, tipping the steering wheel, annoyed he looks at us and twitches his head to tell me to come.

Now my mother also starts to pull her away.

Emeli let go

She said softly

Al's got to go, you hear?

Shrewdly she started to loosen her grip and started to cling to Antaia. I turned around and went in the direction of the car trying not to look back because I know I cannot hold back the tears. I climbed up the back of the military car, clutching the cold steel firmly.
