Because that way he could lead a quiet life, and that was all he wanted. So he never spoke a word to anyone beyond the necessary. But one day, three years after his arrival in town, that distance began to narrow. When he was returning to his house after buying fish on the pier, he heard a soft voice ask:
-Is it true that you were a privateer?
When he turned to see who it was, he was surprised. He had in front of him a girl who was not more than eight years old. Her face, instead of indicating fear like the other children when they came across him, showed the curiosity that had led her to ask that question.
-No.
He answered coldly and prepared to continue on his way. But the little girl was willing to solve the riddle of his identity, so the next time he passed by on his way back from the pier, she asked him again.
-Is it true that you are a fugitive?
-No.
That little questioning turned into some kind of routine for several months, always in the same place. At first he thought she would give up soon, but it turned out to she was quite a persistent little girl. And finally one day he decided to reward her for her perseverance.
-I was once a soldier.
He answered as soon as he saw her appear on the road.
-Really? How boring.
She was visibly disappointed.
-I take it you will leave me alone now?
The girl shrugged and continued towards the pier, but after a few steps she stopped.
-What's your name?
-Hector.
The old man replied after a brief silence. The girl smiled.
-My name is Esther.
