Chapter 2: The Beach I

The clock read two in the afternoon as the sun shone upon the land. There were but a few clouds suspended in the sky. There was the sound of waves and the smell of water. A crab scuttled across the ground, leaving behind little conical footprints that were imprinted into the sand.

"My, oh my Captain. It looks like a good day to be outside!" a semi-short man who looked like he was in his late twenties stood there on the beach in his shorts with his hand over his eyes, shielding them from the sun. His eyes were as blue as sapphire and his hair looked to be plated in gold. A seagull screeched from somewhere above.

"Indeed it is…" a clean-shaven man in his early 40s said from nearby the blonde guy. He also wore shorts, but he was still wearing his officer hat as he had greatly favored it. He suppressed his commanding presence by not wearing his uniform.

"We made the right call to go to Greece for our day off!"

"Sure it is, as long as you don't go spouting about the Greek Pantheon."

"Did someone say the Greek Pantheon!?" the guy with the abnormally golden hair was suddenly wearing a toga and dancing while laughing like an idiot. The crab that was in their general vicinity scuttled toward the imbecile and started to move, appearing to be trying to dance along with him.

"Even the crabs…" the captain put his hand on his face. Then he sighed deeply with disappointment. He stood there watching the idiot play with the crabs.

A warm breeze came from offshore which prompted him to clutch his hat in fear that it might blow away. Something startlingly cold touched the captains back, making him shake from fear that someone was going to take his hat. He was afraid to turn around, but then he did.

"Oh, it's just you Kuro." he was relieved that it wasn't someone else. "I thought you were Gold."

Kuro was someone who wasn't that tall. They were almost completely silent. Their long envoidened hair went over their face so that nothing except their mouth and flawless chin could be seen. The reason as to why it was covered was unknown. They wore a black officers uniform at all times. They had a strange insignia attached to their coat. The insignia was a bird made of platinum with its wings outstretched, cradling a small gem that had every color on the spectrum writhing deep beneath its surface. There were a few inscriptions upon the bird in an unknown language. Kuro smiled at him as they put their gloves back on.

"Hey Captain!" Gold waved from way down the beach. "Come here! These crabs are funny!" He was too happy, but he was enjoying himself.

"Alright…" the Captain sighed as he did not like Gold's ecocentrism. "It is our first break in a while." He tried to force a smile as he approached Gold and the crabs. Kuro silently trailed behind him.

Gold was surrounded by a multitude of crabs of many sizes, which ranged from the size of a mouse to the size of a housecat. The crabs were an orangish red color and had a pretty big pair of pincers each, proportionate to their size. The crabs had brought various items from the sea and deposited them near Gold, who sat upon a crude throne made of sand.

"It's almost like they're worshipping you…" the Captain was astonished. Kuro was silently snickering as they pet a crab with their cold hands. There appeared to be a cluster of crabs which were around something. They were keeping their distance from it. They clearly didn't want to touch it.

"What are they clustering around? It's an open area." Gold stepped off of the crude throne as it clumped over. He started walking towards the area, but as he approached the Captain, the Captain put his arm out, stopping him.

"Gold." the Captain looked him in the eye.

"C-Captain?"

One of the crabs surrounding the object went towards it, its curiosity overcoming its fear. The object was a hat, a military hat. A Nazi commander's hat. There was something on it. It was some unknown substance, a viscous liquid of some sort.

As the crab approached, the hat slowly started to gravitate towards it. It was a barely noticeable movement and it seemed to be coming from the material stuck to it. The crab reached out a claw towards the substance.

From the substance grew thin tendrils of darkness. They slowly reached out towards that claw. Upon contact with the substance, nothing appeared to happen.

Both Gold and the Captain's eyes widened in astonishment. The crab that was touching the substance was now a few shards of shell and some blood on the sand. The crabs watched, scared but only moving back a little.

The goop separated itself from the hat and distorted. It began to amalgamate into something. It was a crab, a crooked form of the one that was obliterated, seemingly made out of the darkness.

The shadow took a step forward in a stiff, unnatural way. The ring of crabs broke as they tried to flee from this monstrosity. The larger crabs trampled the smaller ones in their escape leaving behind the sound of their sharp legs impaling the squishy insides of the smaller crabs. There were several unnecessary casualties from the panic. One of the small crabs stood there frozen in a primal grief as it looked around at its friends and family who were slain, their inside juices stained the sand. Then it looked at the shadow, which beckoned it to come near.

The small crab slowly walked towards it, but as it was about a foot from it, hesitated. "Don't!" Gold yelled at the crab who stood in the center of a miniature battlefield, littered with bodies. The crab turned around to look at Gold with its beady eyes, but as it did that, it was too late.

The smalls crab had its legs torn off by the shadow as it squirmed around in pain. Next were its claws, which were brutally torn off and devoured. Then the mimic started to liquidate and cover the helpless creature. The poor thing got disintegrated and its mass became one with the blob, as it went around absorbing the victims of the panic. Once it was done, it reamalgamated into a much larger crab. It was now the size of a small dog.

The mimic turned towards the squad of three and stared at them with its hollow and soulless eyes, which faintly glowed white.
