Chapter 28: Experimenting
The small blue lizard looked up at Aura, licked his hand, then crawled up his arm and curled up on his shoulder, where it fell asleep. Aura smiled and stroked its back, feeling the scales that were smooth and cool to the touch.
After a while, the Mistcloak Lizard woke up again. Aura took out a piece of spirit jade and held it in front of its nose. Sensing the spirit jade, the lizard excitedly raised its head and lunged at it. Once it swallowed the jade, it closed its eyes and went back to sleep contentedly.
Aura saw it fall asleep, picked it up and placed it on the bed, and went to sleep as well. He awoke to the sound of his alarm and fed the newborn lizard again. Aura shoved everything back in his backpack and went to the airport, ready to go back home.
On the return flight, Aura summoned out his Mistcloak Lizard, playing with it and feeding it when it wanted to eat.
Aura reached home later that day. Lydian hadn't returned yet, so he was alone. Now that he had his second monster, Aura wanted to test its abilities. Previously it had been too young, but now a period of time had passed and it would be able to use skills.
"Mistcloak Lizard, no, I'll call you Misty, use Shrouding Mists on Puppet."
It was the first time Misty had used a skill, so it took some time for it to get started. After a pause, the lizard coughed up a clump of mist that stuck to Puppet's body and spread out to cover its body. Puppet turned from a green origami figure to a shifting mass of clouds and mist, only keeping the general outline of its previous appearance.
Aura inspected the Puppet shrouded in mist.

Aura used more and more mana to try and inspect Puppet until the text eventually showed its original stats. Misty's level was still level 1 and a stronger investigative ability could still bypass the cloaking effect to some degree, but based on his experiment it would require the other side to have a massive advantage in strength to do so.
Satisfied with the effects of Shrouding Mists, Aura moved on to Misty's second skill.
"Use Illusory Mists on me!"
Misty spat out a much larger cloud of mist than the first time that kept expanding until it filled up Aura's vision. Within the mist, Aura was completely lost, unable to orient himself or determine directions. The illusions were quite rudimentary, showing images of himself, Puppet, and scenes from the airplane. Misty could only display illusions it could imagine or had seen, and those images were all it could produce.
Aura had the Mistcloak Lizard retract its skill, then sank in thought, thinking of what training it should focus on. The main reason he contracted Misty was for its first skill, though its other supportive skills were also useful, so the focus of the training should be on Shrouding Mists.
Aura had Misty try to use Shrouding Mists on Puppet but increase the density of the mists. The lizard did so with difficulty, almost draining all its mana. He then tried to break through by inspecting Puppet. As he had hypothesized, it was much more difficult. Having obtained this result, in the future Misty would try to increase the density of Shrouding Mists as well as speed of release. During breaks, Aura could share stories and travel with it to build up scenes it could produce through illusions.
Time passed in the blink of an eye, and a few days later Lydian returned with her new Shard Feathered Serpent. It was a thin, streamlined serpent with crystalline and feather-like scales. It also had white fins that almost resembled wings that helped it dash through the air.

With school about to start and having to level up their new monsters, the two monster trainers stayed put at home, working hard on their training and developing new tactics with the addition of the new contracted monsters.
