Chapter 15: Sorrow

Fabio led Verzo around the city and they entered the black market. If Fabio took Eguru all the way here he had to be insanely fast. But still - who was faster?

Although that wasn't important at the moment. The most important thing right now was to see Eguru.

"What do you usually do with someone's corpse?" Verzo asked him.

A shiver went down Fabio's spine. He remembered they didn't have much time and if he wanted to live they'd better go to Eguru quick. "We.. burn them."

He swallowed.

"We?"

"Yes. I'm not the only one. We're a crew. You could call it that at least."

"Then what are you waiting for?! Hurry! Or you want to die?!" Verzo quickly stepped behind his enemy and held his knife to his throat. "No. I'll go as fast as I can."

Verzo was surprised by how fast he was but that speed was no match for him. While Fabio was around 70-80mph fast, Verzo could go 110. The fact that they're ordinary - well, more or less ordinary - human beings was crazy.

Just two minutes later they arrived at their destination. They were standing in front of what looked like a entrance to some abandoned basement. And that's exactly what it was.

While entering Verzo heard a lot different noises coming from inside. Voices, machines, etc.

As soon as Fabio was in sight they all cheered and seemed to be really happy about his return. They never expected Verzo to show up here though. Some knew who he was but most didn't. The room was big. Some people seemed to be working on sharpening blades, sorting guns and ammo and some people were having a feast at their tables.

The ones that knew who he was though had gone quiet and didn't even bother looking at him while the other guys were making jokes. "Ey Fabio, who's that kid beside you? Some newbie trying to join us? Did he beg for his life?"

Laughter was filling the basement. Fabio only sighed and the people that stayed quiet walked away. A fatal mistake was made. Verzo didn't plan on killing anyone though. For now. So he made one thing clear by demonstrating his speed and strength. He was stronger than all of them combined.

"Now shut the fuck up before I decide to kill you."

His death threat worked for most of them. The rest, which was a small portion consisting of maybe five people, still didn't realize in what kind of situation they were in. They almost made Verzo snap but Fabio quickly shut their mouth. "BE QUIET!"

He shouted at them. Without hesitation the entire room went quiet. All eyes on both of them. No one dared to open their mouths until Fabio asked one question.

"Where is the guy's corpse I brought here like 15 minutes ago?" In his voice was authority. But in reality, he was scared. His life was on the line. Even though he was a murderer he was afraid of death. It's funny considering how he played with other people's lives recklessly.

Some tall guy who was working on something then spoke. "He's in the prep room. In five minutes he's gonna be burned."

Fabio quietly led Verzo to the prep room where Eguru was lying covered in blue sheets. No one else was in the room and his corpse was the only thing in here. The walls and shelves all had different tools on them. They had basically everything that would be in an hospital too.

Fabio sat down on a chair and Verzo walked over to Eguru's dead body. Taking off the sheets he hid the sadness he felt. His stomach was twisting at the view of his dead friend. "Damn.. May you rest in piece."

His body still didn't look too pale yet but you could definetely see him slowly losing color. The stab wound was wide and still covered in blood. He had been stabbed in the liver. "You", he faced Fabio. "You're not going to burn him. I'll leave this city with him and bury him. But don't think you'll be getting away with it."

Fabio was stunned as he heard the following words. "You're gonna go and stay with me. As payment."

"But why? I wasn't the one who killed him."

"You are the leader of this group. Your companion messed up and already paid with their life. Now's your turn to atone. I'll kill you if you don't."

Verzo was completely serious about this. You could hear it in his voice and the posture of his body. Everything about him was intimidating right now. Naturally the other man had no choice but to agree.

"Good. Now let's go." Verzo proceeded to cover his friend's entire body in those sheets and make sure he could be carried by him. They received some stares when they left but no one asked.

Carrying Eguru on his shoulder Fabio commanded him. "Take him. I need to make a call real quick. You know what happens if you decide to run away or do anything else."

Lia picked up immediately. "Have you two left yet? I can't stop the guards any longer. They've all spread out to search for you. I think you accidentally killed someone way more important than we thought." She sounded full of concern.

It hurt him to say it out loud but it had to be said. "Eguru is dead. I'm going to leave Legrandeus and bury him somewhere. Also, I'm taking his killer with me."

The two were dead silent. Verzo was in mental pain and Lia was shocked. She hadn't known him for too long but she knew Eguru was a good guy.

"I'm so sorry..."
