Chapter 6: Village

Georg turns his head to look at me and says '' A merchant I see, my eyes have not failed me yet, I welcome you to Myrth although you don't seem to have any wares to trade Caspian''

How am I a merchant, is it my clothes, I mean wearing thick gray pants with lots of pockets and a gray jacket that is fully unsuitable for the local weather can make me look quite suspicious, why did he think I'm a merchant, I could be a traveler or another villager, lets run with it for now.

''So what gave me away Georg, I didn't expect to be identified so quickly'' I say with a jovial tone.

''Why of course my many years of experience interacting with traveling merchants, the way you speak is very strange so you most certainly traveled here from far away, and your name Caspian, you think we villagers don't know of the old customs, let me guess you come from a family of sailing merchants, calling oneself Season is too much of a giveaway''

What is he talking about, my accent is perfectly normal, for me at least, and what is this thing about my name, Season is not even related to the sea, who would even...

He did mention customs, maybe in this world merchants turn their profession into their names. But he did say mine is quite obvious, maybe they make it more subtle, need to look into it further, or change my name.

''You are right Georg, my name is indeed quite obvious is it not'' I say with a laugh.

''So then Caspian did you reach here from the port city of Westerngrad, that is quite a ways away did you plan to sell your cargo to the nearby villages then sail back home, and let me guess, the beast surprised you and you lost everything haha''

This man, Georg, is a treasure, he is making up my backstory for me, who doesn't love an old chatterbox.

I assent with my head and praise him ''That is indeed so Georg, you truly have me figured out, and the beast not only scared me away from my wares but also killed my trusty mule, truly being a merchant is a tragedy''

You could see the happiness on his face at hearing my words, why is this man so simple, maybe because he is old, is he senile, doubtful then I wonder why, is everyone like him, I need to figure it out.

''Indeed, you should quit being a merchant while you are still alive, it is much safer being a farmer, you can only enjoy life while you still have it'' And so he started giving me a sermon of how being a farmer is his calling and he couldn't be prouder about it and about how merchants live dangerous lives traveling all around in search of pitiful coin, this man, didn't he tell me earlier with a grim face that his people can't afford to save themselves from the beast, if you had the filthy merchant coin your youth would still be alive... sigh.

And so we finally reach the village and I see the other villagers, to my surprise they are not like Georg at all, they are all dirty and wearing rags, yet they do not look at me with suspicion but with pity, is my current appearance that awful I wonder.

While walking I interrupt Georg's lecture to ask him where we are heading and he says one word, Healer, what exactly is a healer, it is a doctor, a herbalist, some crazy old lady, will they cover me in leeches to cure my ailments. With all that said I can't say I am ungrateful for there actually being someone who should be able to help me, it's getting harder to breathe, maybe I did break a rib or two.

We finally reach a wooden hut in the middle of the village and Georg just walks in while saying ''Sir Thomas the beast attacked a merchant that wandered into the forest, the fool is alive but barely, try to give him a hand''.

The man inside, named Thomas, was clean, that is what first came to mind, he has a head full of white hair and a white beard, his clothes also white in color look to be in a decent enough shape when compared to the others, I guess he doesn't work the fields.

Thomas gets out of his chair and quickly shuffled his way over to us only to exclaim with a surprised tone of voice, he also has a funny accent, it made me laugh a bit.

''Georg, quickly put him down, he is bleeding all over the floor'' Am I bleeding I wonder, so I look down and color me surprised there are a few drops of blood on the wooden floor, when did that happen.

Georg carries me on top of a bed and tries to gently lay me on it which ends up not quite as gentle as id like as I pretty much get dropped on top of a wooden board covered with a layer of straw and a cloth mat.

As I lay there looking up at the ceiling Thomas comes up to me and says something, I couldn't quite catch it so I turn my head around to look at him, he then quickly grabs my head with his hand and makes me look at the ceiling once again, as he takes back his hand I could see the part that touched me, it was red with blood, my blood.

When did that happen?
