Chapter 2: Chapter 2

The next morning when I woke up there was a crash of lightening. Shuffling out of the warmth that my sheets provided I made my way to the window. Peeking past the curtain and through the window it was storming. The trees branches harshly whipped against the wind, threatening to break at any moment. The ground was flooded from the unrelentless rain that soaked into any permeable layer left. The sky lit up with different blues and purples as the rest of the world prepared for the boom.

Moving my head away from my window I silently shuffled through the hall and down the stairs. Making my way to the kitchen after refusing to make eye contact with the picture frames I attempted to turn on the light. Shifting the switch up and down and up again I sadly realized that we had no power. I sighed not really hungry for anything anyways. Opening the door the the backyard I zig zagged my way through the yard to try to avoid any major puddles. Trudging up to the big oak tree that held up my fort I started to climb the ladder. Soaking wet I fell onto the damp wooden floor before crawling my way to the window.

Looking around the tree house it was dark and gloomy until the lightening would strike filling the room with fierce shadows from the contents of the house.

I watched the rain once again as I remembered almost every detail from that night.

My team had just won our first baseball game and my parents where so excited. It started to sprinkle on our way home but as we drove further into the storm it increased. The rain poured down like buckets being dumped from the heavens above. My mother and I where talking about the game while my father focused on the road. He had slowed down in hopes to not hit anyone or anything. We ended up hydroplaning and crashing into a tree. The air bag on my mothers side had failed to deploy leaving her body bloody and bruised on the dash. I had hit my head on the back of my mothers seat only having a small concussion while my father stumbled out of the car. Smoke started to erupt from the engine as I crunched the damp leaves with my feet.

"Stand back Calvin" my dad said while shooing me away from the car.

I took a couple steps back and looked at the wreckage. Our black suburban was wrapped around a tree, scratch's along the paint while other places where dented beyond repair. My body still in shock from the accident didn't know what to do as I saw my dad on the phone while desperately trying to wake up my mother. My knees grew week and I landed in the wet pile of leaves and mush below me. My dad was now screaming as tears raced down his face. I looked up at the sky, the rain had decamped itself leaving gray clouds in its path. When the clouds parted it was only little slivers but I could see the dark blue sky that held up the small burning balls of light. Moments later I heard sirens and saw bright red and blue lights light up the gloomy setting. Foot steps impaled the muddy ground, some running while others shouting orders. I felt a hand on my shoulder but I didn't bother to look up to see who it was. Shifting my gaze back over to where the crushed car was I noticed several people rush up to where my mother was in the car and try to pry her out. Her lifeless body was pulled limp from the car and placed on the ground. My father was pulled back from the scene by two men in blue uniforms while I was picked up off of the ground. I didn't struggle, I didn't even move as the person carried me closer and closer to the scene. My eyes glued on my mother as a emt pronounced her dead. I heard me fathers cry's of pain and hate as the seriousness of what happened finally set in. My eyesight was clouded by the tears that threatened to spill down my face. My heart felt like it got ripped out my chest and shoved down my throat. I couldn't speak, I could hardly breathe as the checked if my eyes where dilated.

Later that night I was taken to the hospital where they checked over every inch of my being. They said I suffered a minor concussion but physically I was fine. Little did they know that mentally and emotionally I was tearing myself apart each painful piece at a time.

After that night I was taken to a therapist twice a week to 'deal' with what happened. I will admit the therapy helped a little but in the end I felt even more broken.

We had her funeral about a month ago, I stood there absentmindedly while people I've never met walked up and talked about my mom like the knew her. They all looked sad but was anyone really grieving as much as me and my dad where? We where there as the car hit the tree, we where there as her airbag didn't deploy and we where there as she was pronounced dead. These people that stood before me were just people she once knew.

We where brought food and diners almost everyday for weeks after that. We had no room left in our freezer until finally they just stopped coming. The food stopped coming then the 'sorry for your loss' stopped being said until finally no one seemed to want to talk about my mom or the accident anymore, like they were pretending it didn't happen. To this day I can't sometimes still see the blood that seeped through my hands as I grabbed the back of her seat.

I gulped as I pulled my eyes away from my hand and back at the pouring rain.
