Chapter 25: My Engagement is Being Threatened Again

Lan Feiluo shook his head as he thought of the Annual Yanying City Tournament the other day. It was only the first round, the entire tournament would take place over a month.

Yet, in that first round...

Knock, knock.

"Come in." Lan Feiluo's eyebrows scrunched up. It must be him.

Lan Peng opened the door, his beer belly as rotund as ever. He squinted his eyes and giggled as he saw Lan Feiluo's forced smile.

"Ah, my brother, oh, how has managing the family been? Has it been too hard for you? Shall I take over?"

"Enough of these empty pleasantries, Peng. Tell me what you want."

As he heard that, Lan Peng's cheery disposition disappeared. "What, you disappointed with your daughter? Don't worry, she's only 13, once she's older, she'll make a pretty concubine. Heeheehee!"

Lan Feiluo suddenly stood up, the papers and documents on his table scattering all over the floor. He grabbed the collar of Lan Peng's shirt, the buttons popping off. He lifted him up, a few inches off the ground.

"You know, despite my appearance, I am actually quite light." Lan Peng simply looked down and smiled. "Let's have ourselves a civilized conversation, shall we?"

Lan Feiluo breathed rapidly, his fury trying to pierce through Lan Peng's gaze. In the end, he calmed down as he dropped his brother on the floor.

Lan Peng stood up, pulling his clothes straight. "You know, my maid worked hard to fix these up."

Lan Feiluo stayed silent.

"Listen, Feiluo." Lan Peng turned serious. "You already know my intentions by coming here."

"The tradition of the Lan family is to pass the position of the head, only from generation to generation! I have explained to you multiple times, I will not concede on this." Lan Feiluo shook his head.

"It is also tradition of the Lan family for the head to be the strongest of that generation." Lan Peng placed his hand on Lan Feiluo's shoulder.

"You might have been talented back then, but look at you now. After the incident, you grew weaker and weaker! Even I am stronger than you, my dear brother."

Lan Feiluo felt a weight comparable to the moon on his shoulder. His thoughts ran rampant. "Th, this is, Moon Blood Realm*?!"

"What more do you want, I already gave you the position of vice-head!"

Lan Peng smirked. "You know how the Xie family wants to break the engagement with our Lan family?"

Lan Feiluo's eyes widened. He calmed himself down. "Well, we cannot let our Lan family lose face, can we? To simply agree to break it off would be ludicrous."

"Hm, the reason for the Xie family wanting to break it off is because of your son's incapability to do anything properly."

Lan Feiluo bit his lip. He couldn't refute that.

"So, the solution would be to switch the one engaged, eh?"

"Switch?"

"Simple. Instead of your trash son, why not marry the Xie family heir to my son instead?"

"...Your son?" Lan Feiluo couldn't help but recall his daughter's painful defeat in the hands of Lan Peng's son, Lan Zhou. Lan Hailu was out of commission, disqualifying her for the rest of the tournament.

"He's a frail young man who won by a fluke yesterday. What makes you think he's a suitable candidate?"

"Let's bet on it then. If he wins the entire tournament, you will have to switch your son with mine as the Xie family heir's groom."

Lan Feiluo clenched his fist. He had promised his son that his engagement wouldn't break. "That's not possible. The Xie family heir and my son are already very familiar with each other."

"Isn't it as simple as familiarizing her with someone else?" Lan Peng shrugged. "Brother, stop making excuses. Do you agree or not?"

"I've already made my stance. I do not agree."

"Very well. Let's see if the elders can be convinced then..."

Lan Feiluo watched as the door closed. With Lan Peng gone, all that was left in his office was silence.

All of a sudden, blood ran up his throat, and exited through his mouth. He coughed violently, pounding his own chest to ease the process.

His old injuries had flared up again.

"My son, this is the best I can do..."

.....

"Achoo!" Lan Xiang rubbed his nose.

"Hm? Did somebody think of you?" Zhang Ying continued eating a whole chicken leg.

"I don't know who would think of me at this time. Maybe Jian'er...?" The corners of Lan Xiang's mouth curled up at the thought.

"Both of you, stop talking while your mouths are full! Here, a tissue." Ye Qingle handed a single tissue paper to Lan Xiang.

"Eh? Where'd this come from?" Lan Xiang didn't see Ye Qingle bring anything down with her from the classroom.

"Er, a, ahaha... I always bring some tissue with me... in my pocket! In my pocket." Ye Qingle sweat bullets.

Although Lan Xiang found it suspicious, he shrugged it off for now. It was only a single tissue anyways.

Zhang Ying swallowed everything in her mouth. "So, about what you said earlier."

"Hm?" Lan Xiang finished eating his food as well.

"Is Xie Jian really your girlfriend?" Zhang Ying's eyes sparkled.

"...Eh? Where did this come from?"

"You mentioned her again! Do you know how many times you mention her in a day? I counted today, this is the 12th time!" Zhang Ying put emphasis on the word twelve.

Ye Qingle was also interested. Although she didn't think it was true, she dared not say it out loud. Last time, when he rejected her to come with and only allowed Ren Weiwei, her curiosity couldn't rest.

The next time they met, Ren Weiwei couldn't stop gushing about how she met Xie Jian, her idol.

"Weiwei isn't a liar, right? Or maybe for him, she would become delusional..." Ye Qingle scratched her head. For now, she needed to confirm the facts without showing any doubts.

Lan Xiang sighed. "I already told you, it's true. You can go ask Weiwei too, well, when she comes to school."

"I... also want to meet Xie Jian." Ye Qingle meekly pulled on Lan Xiang's sleeve.

"Hm? Right now?"

"Yeah, yeah! Me too!" Zhang Ying winked at Ye Qingle.

"Okay, let me call her then. I don't know what she's doing right now." Lan Xiang found joy in finding a reason to call her.

There was a time when he would always call her, no reason why. In the end, Xie Jian was caught using her phone in school, and she forbade him to call her without informing her first.

-Jian'er, my other friends also want to meet you, can I video call you?

- Okay. I was about to call you anyway.

"She agreed!" Lan Xiang grinned.

As Lan Xiang tapped away on his phone, Ye Qingle whispered to Zhang Ying. "Do you really think it'll be Jianjian?"

"I don't know, we're gonna find out now though."

"Hey, hey, Holy Macaroni Jesus!" Lan Xiang's nose almost bled. "Jian'er, put on some clothes!"

"It's fine, I'm in my pajamas anyways, hahaha..."

Lan Xiang took another look. I'm pretty sure you don't sleep naked...

"Are you drunk?" Lan Xiang noticed her blushing red face.

"Drunk, me? Psh, no, why would I, the upright girl, become drunk? That's silly..."

The cafeteria made enough noise that nobody could hear the two's conversation, much to Lan Xiang's convenience. Except for Zhang Ying, who perked her ears - she could hear everything.

"So? What is she saying? Is it really Jianjian?" Ye Qingle nudged Zhang Ying.

"Yeah, it is her alright. Seems like she's drunk again." Zhang Ying almost burst out laughing.

"How many times have I told you to lay off the alcohol? Ah, and you were doing so well for the past month or so." Lan Xiang lectured her through the phone. He had turned off the video feed a long time ago.

After a while.

"Okay, bye." Lan Xiang hung up.

He walked back to the table where Ye Qingle and Zhang Ying were. "Sorry guys, she's... not in her right mind today. Maybe next time."

Ye Qingle and Zhang Ying nodded, pretending that they didn't hear a single thing.

Meanwhile, Lan Xiang called up Lu Xifa.

"Xifa, where are you right now?"

"Hm? I'm eating at some famous restaurant here in Pei Luan. I can't really read the name..."

"Can you do me a favor?"

"...No. I already told you, I'm not your vehicle!"

"Come on, just bring me to my house. For a few minutes."

"No! Why are you always like this!"

"Please, this is the last time, I promise." Lan Xiang crossed his fingers.

"Okay, fine. But this'll be the last time. No more after this."

"You're really my savior, ah."

"Meet me in the garden."
