Chapter 2: Sej Damian

The light was shining through a small rectangular mirror as the sun rose over the horizon announcing the morning. Sej Damian, an orphan awoke. Sej was medium sized for his young age of 10 years old. He had short black hair and green eyes. A thin youth who looked slightly malnourished with an oval head. On his face was a smile, a smile filled with hope. That was because today was the day that the Ashfall sect was recruiting. It had been 15 years since the abrupt invasion of Earth by a race that was later proven to be human destroying both mankind's understanding of the universe, their history and their armies. But none of that mattered to Sej because today was the day he had been waiting for.

After dressing, Sej waited in the open area for the director of the orphanage to come and collect him and the other 10-year-old kids. The kids did not speak with each other. It could have been the nerves but Sej did not care. He just wanted to leave and forget this boring place. Sej had only been there for a year as his parents died in a car crash. Most of the time spent was grieving and refusing to accept his new reality while later it was just adapting and hoping to find a way out. The only solution he found was the recruitment. As a result, he did not make friends at the orphanage.

The time was coming up to 7am and the director soon arrived and took the kids to a group of cars hired by the orphanage to transport the kids to the city centre. Soon arriving at the recruitment site, the director spoke, "Kids, this is it, someone will be taking you from here. If you succeed, then this will be goodbye, if you fail, it's ok. One day you can find a career for yourself here on Earth. The stars are not for everyone to travel."

Soon a 20-year-old male wearing copper coloured robes appeared. He gave of an intimidating aura as before saying "Follow me" before turning and walking away. the group of kids followed the man into a plaza that had a few pavilions set up. The area was filled with children at the age of ten, lining up or standing to the side and waiting to be tested. Many could be seen walking away from the area with dejected expressions on their faces and some were even crying. "wait in line over there" said the Copper robed disciple pointing to a line to the left before leaving. The kids quickly moved into the line and quietly.

Sej was becoming more and more nervous. He started fidgeting. This was his chance to break away from the ordinary and boring life and become a cultivator to explore the galaxy and yet he had no control over the results which made him scared. The previous day the director explained that the test was split into three categories. The first was the speed at which the person can naturally absorb spiritual essence into the body. Except Sej had no idea what that meant. Spiritual essence did not exist on earth and the unheard of in any field of science and technology 15 years ago. There were mentions of it in legends and folk law, but no one cared, and it was forgotten about. All he could gather was it was a type of energy. Next was the test of the strength of one's soul. This he could understand but again had no control over. Finally came the most mysterious test. The test of destiny.
