Chapter 1: It's Because You Lived

—away from all of them. Get away.

It repeated in my mind over and over again until I really did made myself further away from them.

Ki.

The name the late old man calls me. I never got any name when I was born. My mother died giving birth to me, my father left her months before I was born, maternal grandparents didn't want me because they said I was cursed, while paternal grandparents ignored me. My biological family didn't want me at all.

I wandered around the streets, stole to survive, even got beaten up by several people, and almost died a dozen times. In that life of mine, I became a thief that no one could hunt down and became a person who befriended the shadows. I lived that way until I was seven. Soon, I was taken in by the old man I was supposed to steal from and lived in in house for three years and a half.

The old man had no other relatives I knew except for his twin grandchildren, Stefanie and Stefan. Those two were the same age as I am.

The twins became like my siblings as each day passed. Stefan was like my brother and he also is my rival in everything. While the old man taught us many different things that an ordinary child wouldn't learn, Stefanie attended a boarding school and was taught the normal way unlike us.

I didn't learn why grandpa would want me to be included with Stefan. He wasn't related to me in any way at all, but he cared for me and made me expand my knowledge. I only learned on this night when the enemy attacked.

The enemy was skilled yet it wasn't enough to leave a scratch on the old man or me. The unwanted visitor didn't leave alive either.

The enemy used his last words to make known of who I was. "The son of the Shadow and the Light. The bringer of the Unbalanced must be kill—"

I stabbed him before he could do anything. But I was wrong. It wasn't two to one when this fight started, it was one to two - me versus the old man and the person I killed.

"Orders have been said. Instead of I, ending your life. End mine," he persuaded.

I hesitated at first until I perceived why it should happen. Grandpa and all the men in his family were assassins and he would be marked as a traitor if I were not to kill him. If I were just to leave him wounded, they would like to question his skillfulness and still might be killed by their master. Therefore, death was the only choice. And he chose it to be made by me.

Inside the room were only me, the dead man , and Grandpa. "Ki–" My grandfather gathered his breath in order to speak but his voice was brittle even if he tried to stabilize it. "Remember...what I... I s-said a-and.. wa...what I taught."

My eyes were dead as the cold night. I didn't cry. I couldn't feel anything even if he was about to die. I was dead inside while I thrust the dagger into his heart. He didn't scream, shout, nor grunt. He was as silent as ever.

It was because I lived that my grandfather had to die by my hands. It was because of me. Even from the very start of my life.

Son of the Shadow and Light. Bringer of the Unbalanced. It was what the sent assassin called me. There a lot of questions I would like to ask, but none in the house knows who I am. Or what I am...

I am just simple orphan, abandoned by a father, left by a mother, and has no other one to trust and to rely on. Anyone who helps me, becomes dead when alone. Anyone I trust, soon betrays me.

Stefan wouldn't help me. No, actually, I don't like his help. If by any chance he finds out that I was the one who killed his grandfather, he would join in the hunt.

After that night, I retrieved what the old man wished for me to own and I sealed it like he would want me to do. I escaped their house unseen.

"Hey!" A shout disturbed me from my thoughts. I walked faster and prevented that person to catch up. "I said, hey!" That person suddenly jumped in front of me and grabbed me on my shoulders. "You are..." She whispered, "The thief who steals per requests, right?"

I ignored the brunette. I have no time for games today when the shadows whispered of someone watching me. I ran towards an abandoned building. Still, the girl followed me in and so did the spies and assassins. She is in danger. I am in danger. I can protect myself, but she can't. I slowed down my pace once I saw a working elevator. Instantly, I gripped onto her hand.

"Woah! I have a boyfriend, mister. Please let go. I am only here for a request," she complained, struggling to get my hand off hers.

I neglected her. I can't listen to her right now when guns suddenly pointed at us and I pushed the button to the top.

"Who are they?!" Her emerald eyes bulged.

I didn't let go of her hand and the second the doors opened, I dragged ourselves to the edge. The assassins finally surrounded us after they ran and climbed the stairs.

"Do not scream. The shadows will save you," I said, pulling the black coat off me. I made her wore it and later pushed her off the edge.

I pulled a dagger from a secret pocket on my pants and went for the kill, striking the assassins one by one. I didn't heard the girl scream. She really did what I said. It must've been hard for her to keep it all in. Or maybe not, I thought as I pressed on the gem of my ruby ring. Before I knew it, the shadows came and locked the darkness beneath their feet. It became easy for me to make them bleed.

I smirked on the redness of their clothes. My eyes flared with ferociousness when a large explosion erupted from the bottom of the building, close to where the brunette should have dropped. Ahh no... It should really be where the girl fell.

She was no innocent girl. She was one of them who wanted to kill me. I knew that when she approached me and it was proven when I tested her not to scream while falling. No inexperienced person would not shriek when they fall. Even if they tried to stop their screams, their voices would still be unleashed.

The shadows brought me back my coat, clean and not a dirt, while I jumped on the opposite side of the building.

This is now my life. It has been this way for ten years already. I wandered around the streets, stole per requests from greedy people through a dark website, even got beaten up by several people, and almost died a dozen times. During those days, I learned a few by gathering information from assassins. Basically, I am one with the shadows. When I was a little thief and befriended the darkness, it became unexplained when I see what they see, hear what they hear, and control them.

Ki.

It was what the old man named me, and forever will I cherish it and never forget. But right now I can't keep it. I have to change names just for the reason I am hunted by hundreds of notorious powerful families because of the price on my head. Dead or alive.

As of this moment, I must run away.

—away from all of them. Get away.

It repeated in my mind over and over again until I really did made myself further away from them.

It began from the very start when I was left alone to survive in the streets to steal. I was a thief and will always be one. I stole a life so I could live. Now, I would do it again and again just so I can live and find the truth. Starting again with the collector's item that old man made me retrieve: The Akashic Keys.
