Chapter 7: An Awkward 'Hi'
"What do you mean, you won't come?!" Kenneth was furiously walking back to his home after having a useless trip to the station where he was supposed to meet his friends. He was clutching his bag tightly with his left hand and his phone with his right hand beside his ear when he saw a park near his neighborhood and decided to stop there for a while.
Kenneth tends to walk funnily when he's on the phone, especially when he's this annoyed at his friends. Knowing this, of course he'd stop.
"I'm so sorry, Pal. Camille told me that her boyfriend ditched her and she wants to watch the latest movie on the theaters" Damien was a loving brother. So loving that he'd cancel all of his plans if it were to make his sister happy. He constantly spoils his sister so much that she grew dependent on her brother which was a bad idea but Damien doesn't seem bothered by it at all.
However, Kenneth wasn't so convinced.
"Tch. Just after reading Leo's text that he will be staying at his house today, you suddenly called saying that you too, won't come! You two, planned this didn't ya?" Kenneth wasn't exactly the type to get so angry about petty things like this. He just didn't know where he would go after he ends the call with Damien.
Kenneth's mother took the only key to their house and he wasn't sure when his mother would be coming home. She was supposed to have a happy reunion with her classmates from high school. His Dad always comes late so he's off the list. Damien is going with his sister to a movie so he won't be at home then, it would be awkward with Damien's family in the house if he intrudes. Leo too, is off the list, especially now that his mother's home.
Kenneth couldn't help but sigh in frustration which Damien heard over the phone. Damien too, really wanted to go with Kenneth to shop for "The Forsaken God" stuff. Too bad, he couldn't leave his sister be.
"I'm so so sorry, Dude. I'll make it up to you next time and buy you any item you want, okay?" Kenneth's eyes glowed and his heartbeat raced. He thought of numerous things he could think of that Damien could buy him.
"If it's like that then okay, I'll forgive you." Kenneth chuckled in excitement. If there's anything that will cheer him up, it'd definitely be some item related to his favorite series.
The park was quiet. Surprisingly, even though it's a weekend, there were no children playing. Not like Kenneth didn't favor this, though. He could stay here for a while and think where to go next.
Kenneth heard the leaves rustling, it was peaceful. The view was also peaceful. Everything in his life was peaceful and he just couldn't help but smile and close his eyes as the wind caresses his face.
"I'll hang up, enjoy the movie Damien." Kenneth pressed the end call button without waiting for Damien's reply. He went for the nearest swing and sat there, thinking of ways he could keep his mind busy but he was unsuccessful.
Somehow, he felt that just staying here wouldn't bore him that much as he expected it to be. He felt that, even though the only view he could see was still houses and slides for kids, it was still serene.
He closed his eyes for the second time, creating a slight curve on his lips to form a smile and slowly moving on his swing.
Kenneth wasn't bothered that he was alone but he felt like he needed company. No matter how peaceful and not boring of a situation he was in, he felt that it would be best to have someone by his side now. He wasn't asking for much, just someone he could talk to cause for the first time in his life, he felt lonely.
He closed his eyes for a few more minutes, still trying to think of ways to spend his day. The moment he slightly opened his eyes he could feel someone staring at him. He shifted his eyes to that person and was slightly shocked when he saw an embarrassed face of Alex. Or was it Allen? Kenneth couldn't quite remember though he did leave an impression on Kenneth, so he recognized his face at once.
He forgot that Allen(or Alex) lived in this neighborhood as well. Kenneth was kind of looking down on him from his point of view. One thing Kenneth was always proud of was his height. No matter how tall Allen is, Kenneth was still taller so he could still see the messed up partition of hair Allen had.
"Y-you looked like you were...alone and in need of ...company.." his voice was fading away in embarrassment. Allen kept his head down but he couldn't hide his pink ears. Why was this guy always shy around him, Kenneth wondered. Soon, Kenneth concluded that maybe there was some part of him that was intimidating this guy. Somehow, he wanted to change that.
Kenneth smiled at him while he titled his head to face Allen who was now, sitting beside the swing Kenneth was sitting on. It was an extremely contagious smile which made Allen smile as well. Luckily, he was sitting because he also felt that his knees were wobbly.
"Hi." To break off the silence, Kenneth tried to say something. Though it was really a standard way of starting a conversation, it felt awkward and Kenneth couldn't help but laugh at himself for trying. He scratched the back of his head as if apologizing that he made the atmosphere weirder that it already is.
Allen however, was caught off guard. He didn't expect Kenneth's voice to be so deep. It was manly. Even his laugh was attractive. Allen, though it was very foreign because this was the very first time he felt this way, concluded that he might have a crush on this guy.
It never occured to him that maybe the reason why he couldn't find girls attractive was because he's gay. It never did because he wasn't so conscious of guys before either. But now he's having doubts.
