Chapter 1: The sorting
Soldiers and military personnel flooded the streets banging on the doors of civilians.
For weeks now people had executed if there was more than 6 people in each household. This was the result of overpopulation and a rising pandemic. Anyone with a criminal background wasn't even given a chance to live..
Luckily there was a chance of survival for huge families, uncles, aunts, or good family friends could take nieces and nephews into their homes. Teenagers would be given several tests to complete before they were transferred into new families, if they failed the were executed immediately.
But after all.... This is America
My dad is a tall guy with black and silver hair, glasses, and a bad temper. He actually used to be in the military but he had to retire due to a back injury.
Dad answered the door and let the soldiers in, a female Sergeant walked in and dad saluted and got into form.
"Good evening Sargent! What can I do for you today?"
The Sergeant was a beautiful, short, middle aged black woman with dark freckles across her face.
"Good evening to you too, I'm told you're still trying to get one of your daughters into a new home, is that correct?"
He didn't hesitate, "Yes Sergeant!"
"Thank you for being honest, what's her name?"
"Magnolia!"
"Magnolia? Sweetie could you please come here?"
She used a loud but gentle voice.
Magnolia finished putting her dark brown hair into a bun when she entered the room. She made sure to stand up straight and maintain eye contact with the Sergeant.
"Yes ma'am?"
The Sergeant looked at my dad, "You raised her well"
Dad smiled "Thank you Sergeant!"
She looked looked back at Magnolia "I'm Sergeant Bailey I will be supervising you during your tests, I believe we may have found you a family."
Magnolia's face lit up, "Thank you Sergeant!"
Sergeant Bailey continued "I trust that you have a duffel bag already packed?"
"Yes ma'am." Magnolia had packed her bag a couple days ago when she figured out that she'd have to leave.
Sergeant Bailey looked pleased "Good, now make your goodbyes quick we're leaving in five minutes."
Magnolia looked shocked, :five minutes?!: She thought while biting her tongue.
"Yes ma'am"
Sergeant Bailey gave a nod to Magnolia and her dad and walked out onto the front porch.
Magnolia hugged her dad, "I'll miss you so much!"
Dad hugged her back, after she had said her goodbyes to the rest of her family she grabbed her duffel bag and went out to the Sergeant.
"Good, you're 2 minutes early, let's head out it's a 2 hour drive from here."
Sergeant Bailey lead me to a large black SUV Magnolia climbed in and sat her bag on her lap.
The engine roared to life and got onto the road with no hesitation. Sorrow filled Magnolia's heart as she watched her home shrink in the distance..
