Chapter 3: Chapter 3: Project Tutoring
Angel's POV:
"Angel!!" Mama called. I groaned and rolled over on my side. The door opened and she walked in. She shook me. "Angel wake up!! You got school." She said, as she opened the curtains and blinds. I groaned. "Mama!!" I whined. I turned over to my other side. "Get up!! I won't tell you again." She said. She cut my light on. I groaned in frustration.
I got up and walked over to turn it off. I hated when she did that. It always annoyed me when parents turn on the lights then leave them on. Or when they don't close the door all the way. I stretched then walked over to the bathroom. I looked in the mirror and blew a breath. I stepped into the shower and washed myself. The water felt so good on my skin.
Afterwards, I stepped out and got dressed. I brushed my teeth and did my hair. I grabbed my bag and headed downstairs. I saw Kya and Mama sitting down in the kitchen. "Alright I'm off to work. Take your sister to school." Mama said. "What?" I said. She closed the door behind her. I looked at Kya. She smirked. "But first, make me some toast. I'll have one jam and one honey." She said.
"There'll be breakfast at school." I said, as I pulled out my phone. I checked the time. "Don't have time. Come on Kya." I said. "What about my toast?" She asked. "I'm sure they'll be some at school." I said. We walked out the door. We got in the car and drove off. I heard my phone ping. "Kya see who that was." I said. She grabbed my phone and looked at it. There was a short silence.
"It's from Mama. It's some kind of address. There's two of them. She said put it in google maps." She said. I looked at my phone and saw the address. I inputted the address. It took me to a high school. "I'm guessing this is my school. Let me take you to yours then."'I said, as I quickly sped off. "Angel!!" Kya cried. "Put your seatbelt back on dummy!!" I said. I sped off towards another school.
"This looks more like you." I said, as we got out. We quickly walked inside the school. People looked at us. "Hello how can I help you?" One asked. "Hi. This is Kya. She's your new student." I said. A lady walked over to a computer's door began typing. "Oh yes. Kya Nicholson. Here's your schedule. Have a nice day." She said. Kya grabbed her schedule and ran off to class.
"Here's her emergency contact form. Just fill it out and give it back tomorrow." The lady said. I nodded and ran out the door and to the car. I got in and quickly sped off back towards my school. I pulled up and got out. I ran inside and found the front office. I walked up to the receptionist. She looked up at me and smiled. "Hi. How can I help you?" She asked.
"My name is Angel Starlight. I'm your new student." I said. She gasped. "Your the Angel Starlight. Oh my God I am such a huge fan. Your surf skills are amazing." She said. "Thank you so much." I said. "Here's your schedule. Have a nice day Angel." She said. I thanked her. But before I could walk away, the bell rung. I groaned. "No worries. I can write you a late pass." The lady said.
"Thanks so much." I said. She wrote me a pass and I walked away. I walked up and down the halls, looking for my classroom. I turned a corner and bumped into someone. "Oh my God. I am so so sorry." I said. I looked up to see a purple hair girl. "It's good." She said. She looked up at me and gasped. "You're Angel Starlight. You are such an amazing surfer. I'm Tabitha." She said, holding her hand out. "Nice to meet you." I said.

I shook her hand. "Oh my God I can't believe the Angel Starlight is going to the same school as me." She said. I smiled sheepishly. "Yeah I would like this school if I can find my way through it. Do you know where this classroom is?" I asked, pointing at my schedule. She looked down at it. "That's my class. I'm headed there now. You can follow me." She said. I smiled. We walked down the halls and downstairs to a classroom.
We entered the room and everyone looked at me. "Tabitha!! You're late! Again!" The teacher said, as he glared at her. "Girl troubles." She said. He got flustered. "My apologies. And who are you miss?" He asked. "I'm Angel Starlight. I'm new." I said. He took his glasses off, wiped them, then put them back on. "The Angel Starlight? The surf guru?" He asked. Wow. "She is Angel Starlight! Hey I follow you on Instagram!!" Someone yelled.
Aw man. Everyone started clamoring to get to me. "Whoa whoa!! Everyone settle down!!" The teacher said. I shook my head. This is not what I wanted on my first day of school. "Angel is a regular student just like the rest of you. Do not bombard her." The teacher continued. I looked at Tabitha. She was staring at me. "Come Angel. Sit with me." She said. "No sit with me." Someone said. "No me!!" Someone else said.
"I just wanna sit down." I said. "You can have my seat." Someone said. "Relax!! Angel go have a seat between Tabitha and Rose." The teacher said. I looked over and seen Rose. She smiled at me. I quickly walked over to her and sat down. "I see what you mean about people bombarding you." She said. "See? It's hard for me to go anywhere without being recognized. Now I know how Beyoncé feels." I said.
I paused. "Of course I'm not Beyoncé but still. I would also bombard Beyoncé because...well it's Beyoncé." I said. Tabitha sat down next to me. "It's Beyoncé. She's a walking goddess." She said. "Exactly." I said. The class carried on but everyone kept staring at me. It was hard not to snap. Then the bell rung. Everyone all blocked the way for me to get out. The teacher had to push everyone away from me.
I walked out into the halls and everyone looked at me. "It is her!!" "She's actually here!!" I can't believe you guys to get to have her class!" "I love you Angel!!" People yelled. I looked around and backed up as everyone gathered around me. Teachers and the security guards thought a fight was about to break out so they separated everyone but that didn't stop them.
A security guard suspected me of doing something so he took me to the office. I had Rose come with me. "Angel, were you about to fight?" The principal asked. "No sir." I said. "Angel was just trying to go to her next class. Everyone surrounded her." Rose said. "Yes. I didn't do anything." I said. He sighed. "Angel I know you are the famous surf guru everyone knows and loves. Huge fan by the way." He said.
I smiled. "But we cannot have you distracting students and causing a fire hazard in the hallway." He said. "I'm not trying to distract anyone. I'm just tryna go to class." I said. The three bell rung. "Very well. Until you graduate, you shall have security guards surrounding you until further notice. I'll write you girls a late pass." He said. He wrote down two notes for me and Rose.
We walked out the door and were surrounded by security.
We walked to our next class. We walked inside and saw Bailey. Everyone looked at me and grinned. "Hi Angel!!" "I love you Angel!!" "Angel I'm a huge fan of yours!" People yelled out. "Everyone quiet down!! We all know Angel is great but this is a place of learning." The teacher said. Me and Rose sat down in the back with Bailey. "Hey." I said. "Hey." She said, irritably. "What's up with you?" I asked, curiously.
"I see what you mean about not going out in public. I saw the crowded hallways earlier. I had trouble getting through people." She said. "See? It was nice being known for surfing but now it's out of control. I have to have guards surrounding me now." I said. "I see." Bailey said. She looked at the security guards. I did too. "Well hopefully this'll all pass and people will start treating you like a normal person." Rose said.
"Hopefully. I can't take much more of this." I said. We tried to focus and do our work but it was incredibly hard when people kept staring at me and taking pictures of me. I tried to ignore it but it was hard. Security had to push some kids when they tried to walked over to me. I covered my face. This is not happening. I smoothed my hair and tried to calm myself down.
I tried my best to ignore everyone and continue to take notes. Then the bell rung again. Everyone all clamored around me again. Security had to hold everyone back so I could get out. "These people are like animals." Bailey said. I laughed. "Now you see why I don't like being out in public? People recognize me and then want to crowd around me then I get in trouble." I said.
"Like I get that they want to talk to Angel or sneak a pic but still. People need to know when to let someone be." Rose said. "Exactly. Uh so we have gym next?" I asked. "Yep. It's right over here, past the school's greenhouse." Rose said. We walked past the greenhouse and I looked over. I saw a Rose. "Hey Rose." I called. She looked at me. I pointed at a flower. "Rose." I said, laughing.
She playfully pushed me. "It's a pretty name." I said. "I know. My Dad has a thing for roses so he had my Mom name me Rose." She said. "Aww." I said. "My parents named me after my dog." Bailey said. "Aww." I said. "Yeah. He used to have very bad seizures. He also had cancer. The vet said he wouldn't survive it so it was best if we put him down now." She said. "Awww poor thing." I said.
"That's so sad." Rose said. "I do miss him but this was ten years ago. But we got a new dog." She said. "Oh that's wonderful. I've always wanted a dog." I said. "So why not get one?" Rose asked. "My little sister is afraid of dogs." I said. "Oh. Bummer. Dogs are so cute." Bailey said. We walked all the way to gym. We walked in and headed straight for the locker rooms.
Then students blocked our path. "Angel you are so awesome!!" Someone yelled. Security had once again tried to hold everyone back from me. Me, Rose, and Bailey quickly entered the locker room. "Wow. They are not gonna leave you alone Angel." Rose said. "Ain't that the truth." Someone said. We turned our heads to see Tabitha. "Oh hey Tabitha. So you got gym too?" I asked, curiously. She nodded.
"Yeah. It was hell tryna get in. Everyone all over school is hoping Angel is in their class." She said. "I don't understand it." I said, chuckling. "Well you're here now." She said. She looked at Bailey then left. I looked at her. "You okay?" I asked. She nodded. "What's up with that?" I asked, curiously. "Yeah why did Tabitha look at you like that?" Rose asked. "Me and Tabitha have history." Bailey said.
"Your gay?" I asked. She quickly shook her head. "Oh no." She said. "I'm just asking. I don't judge." I said. "I meant that we used to be best friends." She said. "What happened?" Rose asked. "We got into a pretty bad fight. She fought my friend because she thought she slept with her boyfriend. She ended up putting her in the hospital. She barely survived. Tabitha broke her both of her arms and legs. She was hospitalized for a whole year." She said.
"Damn. She ducked her up that bad?" I asked. She blushed. "Tabitha has anger issues. Then she fought me because I didn't take her side. My friend is gay and I tried to explain it to Tabitha but she wasn't tryna hear it. Me and her fought so bad, we put each other in the hospital. Afterwards, Tabitha was admitted to a correctional facility for three years." Bailey continued.
"Aww. But she seems so nice." I said. "She seems that way at first, but watch her. She will turn on you quick if she suspects you're running her over." She said. I scoffed. "I'm not a fake friend. I'm not scared fighting anybody. I don't mind stepping to somebody. Hopefully that'll never happen. But still, Tabitha really seems so nice and kind." I said. "Like I said Angel, don't fall for that." Bailey said.
"So she's nice and kind at first but she can turn crazy?" Rose asked. Bailey nodded. "Anyways, let's get to class." Rose said. We walked out the locker room and to the gym. Students walked into the locker room and changed. Security had to surround us in order to keep everyone away from me. "Alright class. We're not gonna do too much today as it's our first week back from break." The gym teacher said.
"What break was it for? It's September." I said. "Every year, we take a short break from school for the school's mascot. The original one from 1940. She was killed in a hit and run. But the break was extended another week because the principal had food poisoning." Rose said. "Ohhhhh." I said. "Now today, we're just gonna run laps indoors. It's raining outside right now." The teacher said.
He paused when he saw me. He gasped. "You're Angel Starlight. Oh man. I'm a huge fan of yours." He said. Aw jeez. "Oh my God Angel. You have amazing skills." He said. A security guard cleared her throat. "Sorry. Anyways, let's start running." He said, as he blew his whistle. We took off running around the gym. Me, Rose, and Bailey ran beside each other.
"Man I haven't done running in a long time." Rose said. "I know right? I'm athletic but I haven't been running since summer break." Bailey said. I didn't say anything as I used to run back in my hometown. This was nothing to me. "Angel what about you? Have you ever done running like this?" Rose asked. "Yes. I get chased down the street by fans all the time. This is nothing new to me babygirl." I said. She giggled.
We giggled around the gym for the rest of the class. We did get to take breaks in between. The last ten minutes of class, we sat down on the bleachers and chilled. Me and the girls talked about a whole bunch of stuff, mainly about surfing, since that was our passion. "Man this one time, I got wiped out by this huge wave." Rose said. "Aw that sucks. Angel have you ever been wiped out before?" Bailey asked.
"Once but that was because my little sister got in the water when she couldn't swim." I said. "Oh being in the ocean, you gotta know for swim. Ohh! This one time I got attacked by a shark." She said. I gasped. "No way." I said. She nodded. "Yes way. Came right out of nowhere. Bit me on my leg. But I survived and was able to surf again." She said. "How did it happen?" Rose asked.
"I was chilling on my board when the shark came out of nowhere." She said. "Oh wow. Were you scared?" Rose asked. "Heck yeah. I was terrified. My Dad beat the shark off me though. I wasn't allowed to go surfing for awhile without my Dad. Now that's I'm older and know what to do if a shark comes near me, I can surf by myself." She said. "That must be terrifying. Being in open waters in shark territory and one just attacks you." I said.
"Angel have you ever been attacked by a shark?" Rose asked. I shook my head. "No thank God. Even though I'm a pro surfer and I've been doing this for years, I'm still careful on where I surf. If I see a shark, I get to dry land and wait til it leaves." I said. "What is it doesn't?" Rose asked. "Then I go home." I said. They both laughed. "I'm not going up against a shark. You crazy." I said.
They laughed harder. When the bell finally rung, we walked out the gym. People immediately approached me. "Angel!!! I follow you on Instagram!!" "Angel I love your hair!!" "Angel can you teach me how to surf?" "Angel you're so amazing!!" "No Angel you're awesome!!" People yelled at me. I watched as security guards tried desperately to hold everyone back from me.
"Leave!! EVERYONE LEAVE!! GO TO CLASS!! If I see anyone still wondering around, you'll be suspended or expelled." The principal said, as he walked through the crowds of students. He looked at me then glared. "Angel, follow me." He said. I looked at Rose and Bailey. I grabbed their hands. "No." The principal said. "They're fine. I just need by my side." I said, making my voices shake.
I made it sound like I was about to cry. We all walked down the halls and to the front office. The principal took us into his office and sat us down. "Look Angel, I think of wonderful that you've enrolled at my school but I cannot have students distracted from their education because of a super star." He said. "It's not my fault. I literally just walked out in the halls and people came at me." I said.
He sighed. "Look Angel, even though I'm a huge fan of yours, I think you should go to another school. Students come here to get an education, not gawk at a super star." He said. "They won't sir!! And I don't need to move. I can't stop people from coming up to me or freaking out every time I enter a room." I said. "Security has been trying to hold people back." Rose said.
"It's not enough. We need more security." The principal said. He thought to himself then smiled. "Okay ladies. I think I may have resolved the guard problem. I gonna hire some more guards. That'll be taken care of. But I have a new problem." He said. "What is that?" Bailey asked. "Well the school has just gotten funded from the state but only if we help a bunch of degenerates." He said.
"Okay so what's that got to do with us?" Bailey asked. "The thing is a small project but still huge nonetheless. It's called Project Tutoring." He said. "Project tutoring?" I repeated. He nodded. "Yes. You girls are gonna tutor some degenerates because we want it to look good on our part." He said. "I guess that's not a problem." Rose said. "Come with me." The principal said.
We followed him to the library. Then we heard loud yelling. We turned around and jumped. I gasped. Oh boy.
