Chapter 3: Idiot System

Ethan was lying under the dirty sheets of the bed, looking up at the ceiling with a calm gaze. Meanwhile, images of his previous life constantly flashed through his mind, making him increasingly upset.

Before, Ethan didn't usually think much about his past life. Although they were still painful memories, he was able to move on with his new life without much trouble, however Elder Rose made sure to bring those memories to the surface once again. He didn't know what Elder Rose had seen in his supposed vision, but from the looks of it, it couldn't be any good.

Despite being a scientist, Ethan was also a good soldier with exceptional reflexes, battle experience, and a natural talent for combat. these traits, along with his ability for coordination and planning, made him a monster when in battle. Under his leadership the military overthrew several capitals of rival countries, on the battlefield he was like a merciless reaper who killed anyone without even hesitating.

The only reason this aspect of him wasn't explored much was the fact that if Ethan died, the army feared that Hyper Intelligence would go with him, just as it did. The army only stopped caring about Ethan's well-being after they were sure he could regain his ability. Hyper Intelligence was actually a physical enhancement skill that only acted on their brain, so if that part of their body was safe, they could always transplant that organ to someone else.

Obviously Ethan's mind, after all, still held all of his memories, so if his brain was transplanted it would still be him, however, he knew the military would likely alter some characteristics of his mind to make him submissive.

No matter what angle Ethan looked at the situation from, the only viable option to save himself and others was his own death. He really didn't regret what he had done, living with guilt and anguish day after day, for him, was worse than death.

*TOC Toc Toc!

A hurried knock sounded on his bedroom door causing him to get up instantly with urgency. Hearing the pattern of those beats he couldn't help but think that something was wrong, maybe Rose's last words were making him paranoid, but he didn't care, it was better to be overly cautious and survive than end up dying from some slip up.

Ethan felt sour whenever he thought about that woman's death and the way her eyes stared at him before she took her last breath. It was as if that moment had sealed his fate without giving him the power to change it.

When the door was opened, it emitted a high-pitched creak revealing the tall figure of a man. In front of him was John with his head down.

"Ethan... Maria, she...". John couldn't even look at his son right now.

Ethan and Maria were very close friends, almost to the point of spending the entire day together. He looked like the typical big brother who always made sure to keep her in line so she wouldn't get hurt, plus it was Ethan who taught Maria to read and write.

"Maria disappeared, Ethan...we found your house totally destroyed today with a trail of blood disappearing in the woods." John said squeezing the words out of his mouth. John knew those weren't the right words to use when informing a child about something like this, but he knew Ethan's temperament and mindset well, he knew that any way he could approach this subject, simple and direct was the best way. choice for your child. "Was her body found?" Ethan asked in a husky voice. "No, we just found her father and mother…dead." John said in a low voice. "I won't lie to you son... Maybe she...". John didn't have time to finish his sentence before the door closed in front of him with a thud. John spent a few minutes in front of the door before turning and leaving, he understood that maybe Ethan needed some time to think about this and John didn't want to end up making things worse. Also, as optimistic as it may sound, as one of the village hunters he had a duty to look for Maria, even if it was just to bury her. On the other hand, Ethan at that moment had a hateful expression on his face. The anger on his face was so extreme that even some adults would be afraid of that child. Ethan wasted no time, after lifting a part of the sheet that had fallen to the floor, he pulled a wooden box from under the bed. The box was simple, with its edges and lock made of an iron-like material. However, the box didn't seem to be locked when Ethan opened it with ease, at that moment the sight of a dagger and a shotgun was reflected in that child's angry eyes. "This happened faster than I thought…" Ethan hid the dagger under his shirt and picked up the shotgun with a cold smile. "Looks like the time has come to put an end to these pests." ..... A commotion spread through the village like wildfire. Residents simply couldn't believe that the people they lived with every day had been the protagonists of such a cruel and grotesque incident. Many people couldn't even see the crime scene for fear of vomiting, this was really a scenario that only strong-minded people could handle. Both of Maria's parents were lying under a pool of blood with wounds on their limbs and chest. Some wounds were ragged and drops of blood were scattered everywhere showing that there was a fight on the part of the victims, their appearance was also not good reflecting the horrible way they died. The house was destroyed, some closets were on the floor with some rubble scattered around, chairs were thrown everywhere and the sofa had similar marks to the victims' injuries. "Whose work was this? Was it some villager?" People wondered. "Kaio and Carla were very calm people, I can't think of anyone who has enmity with them. "

Once again, a crowd gathered in front of the victims' homes and began fervently commenting on the case. It was unbelievable the nature of the scene that unfolded under the eyes of the crowd, the question that echoed in everyone's mind was the following:

Who the hell is to blame?

Obviously this question brought intense fear into people's hearts, if that day it was Karla and Caio, tomorrow it could be them. The idea of there being a murderer among the few villagers was unsettling, so inevitably everyone started to look at each other with suspicion.

"Truly a beast! When we find the murderer, we will make him suffer at the stake." People said.

"All of you… back off!" A group of 10 men carrying weapons and leather armor pushed their way through the crowd, splitting it in two.

Leading this group was John, he had a frown on his face as he looked at the scene in front of him, at that moment he didn't have the luxury of feeling bad about the scene, in fact all he felt looking at it all was intense anger . His sharp green eyes expressed the hatred he felt in that moment, it was as if he wanted to find the person responsible for this and tear him apart.

In his hands, John carried a strange-looking spear. The spear had a light colored wooden handle and a sharp steel tip, if you looked closely you could see some runic patterns written under the spearhead, giving it a mysterious appearance.

"John is taking this seriously. He even took the village's only soul weapon!" Someone commented.

"Look at the scene in front of you, would you do it differently from him? The only problem is, with the power of this weapon, John could end up killing the person responsible very quickly." Someone else snapped.

"You're right..."

The sharp eyes of that imposing man now had a cold gleam as a mark of his anger. His hands gripped the handle so tightly that people feared the weapon could break at any moment, but this was a soul weapon, it wouldn't break so easily.

The frustration on John's face was visible. At each moment, a series of regrets ran through his mind, almost driving him to the brink of madness. 'If only I had paid more attention…'. He thought to himself.

"All of you! I know we're just hunters, but today our duty is different!" John shouted to the men behind him, "I know many are looking for a culprit and wanting justice, but I must assure you that this was not done by any resident of our village!" He screamed.

"What?" People were confused.

All the evidence, as well as the setting of the scene, pointed to a crime committed with a weapon, so the idea that it could have been some animal never crossed people's minds. Furthermore, an unintelligent beast would not be able to do this without alarming the entire village during the act.

That's what everyone thought, but John had the answer to that. After all, he had the opportunity to examine the scene closely before people started cleaning it up and removing the bodies.

"This whole grotesque scene you witnessed is the work of the damn goblins! "He screamed in rage.

Everyone was dumbfounded. Despite Goblins being nasty beasts with the strength of a small child, people didn't take them very seriously, even if you were taken by surprise, you were still very likely to win a fight against an ordinary Goblin. Also, there were very few reports of Goblins attacking humans, most of the time they would steal food and flee at the sign of any danger.

How the hell did such a weak creature manage to do that?

"Let's exterminate these pests once and for all!" Leaving those words, John left with his group without further explanation.

....

The forest that surrounded the village was rich in vegetation and fauna. Among the trees and bushes scattered around the place, a small rabbit jumped from side to side using the trees as a support point to move around. This rabbit had white fur, big eyes, and a mouth that naturally formed into a cute smile.

This rabbit was jumping for a while until he saw something unusual, among the vegetation in which he lived, there was an intruder, a child with black hair and green eyes holding a dagger in his hand. A small trace of malice crossed the rabbit's eyes before he addressed the intruder.

Using another tree as a fulcrum, the rabbit aimed its body at the intruder and darted forward. Still in the air, the rabbit opened its mouth at an unnatural angle revealing several rows of sharp teeth in its jaw, which was a strange sight as it seemed physically impossible to hide all those teeth in such a small body.

When he was a few meters away from the child, the rabbit felt happy, it had been a long time since he had eaten and at that moment a free meal had just knocked on his door, how could he not be excited? However, her smile froze and her consciousness faded as her body split in two like it was made of jelly.

Hello everyone! I am a Brazilian Author who likes stories with systems. Well, I don't speak English, so I use google translator in my story. This is a novel without many commitments, in fact, I am writing it with the purpose of training my plot in order to write a story that came to my mind a short time ago.

I ask you to indicate in the comments any errors regarding the plot and, if possible, give me tips on how to improve my writing in general. I can't do much about the wrong sentences because I don't really speak English.
