Chapter 15: Bad things happen

20th Century

Mira was getting used to the human realm while the others were still struggling to get by each day in their new environment. Mira was yet to learn a human tongue because the problem was that humans have over a thousand languages across their continent. In their environment she noticed they speak a common tongue which Samurai had told her was called English. One night, disguised as a human she was able to learn certain basic words of the language by reading their body language.

Time flew by quickly and she had forgotten  how many months it had been since they came into the human world. She had gotten herself polished ladies clothes, slaves chains and pistols as souvenirs to the supernatural realm. She wanted to have animal pets such as a cat and a snake but with the nature of the supernatural realm, she doubts they would survive.

Lillian's heart nearly stopped beating when she first laid eyes on the slave girl. Lillian had woken up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom when she saw the black slave lying lifeless on the floor. At first, Lillian thought the girl was dead until she got close and heard her heart beating. She was a young girl whose feet and hands were in frayed chains. Her protruded ribs were  visible to the eyes since was barely clothed. She looked malnourished and underweight.

"Mira!" Lillian spat furiously, entering into Mira's room unannounced.

"A human lays lifeless at the bathroom hallway!" Lillian gasped horridly.

Mira's eyes twitched with mischief, "care to explain what a human is doing in this house? What did you do to her?" Lillian narrowed her eyes looking at the witch with suspicion.

"Well she is a meal for you and others. Stop looking at me like that! I'm trying to help you. You don't have to kill her. She is useful being alive." She countered and spun away from Lillian.

"How would she be useful?" Lilian interjected.

"In my absence she could go out under the yellow sun and get things you and the child might need." She smiled

Mira paced across the room and crouched beside the girl's body, steadying her careful. "She is pretty for a slave," she whispered, afraid her voice would awaken the girl.

"Yes, she is." The Vampire Queen muttered, rolling her red eyes.

"Once she steps out she won't come back! Someone will take her captive. We have no use for her. Do take her back to where you brought her from." Lillian sneered with contempt.

"I didn't buy her! Saw her running away from her master in the woods and intervened. I casted an invisible spell on her so that she doesn't get caught again then after her master had left, I made her unconscious and brought her here." Mira got back on her knees.

"Then send her back to the woods," Lillian ordered. "We are trying to keep a low profile. If we get found out Mira will draw the hunters to us. I want to keep my child safe!" Lillian's brow creased with a frown.

"Oh no please let's keep her. She is as harmless as a fly." Mira assured the worried Vampire Queen.

Lillian sighed with exasperation, "As I said, we can't keep her! Have you forgotten who we are?" She questioned with an indignant look on her face.

"Of course I haven't forgotten but what can a human possibly do to us! Is the Vampire Queen afraid of a little slave human girl?" Lillian didn't know if Mira was deliberately trying to goad her.

"Mira, this is not a joke! Look at us. We don't look human, not our eyes or our features. Once she wakes up and sees this, she would know something is up. We can't even speak their tongue." Lillian yelled mortified.

"You aren't seeing the bigger picture here. She is only here for you to feed on not be her mother!" Mira rolled her eyes at the dramatic vampire.

Lillian went and stood beside the girl, her heavy protruded stomach preventing her from crouching. There was nothing special about the human but it seems Mira was intrigued by it. The girl looked deadened which frightened her, "look at her, if I hadn't heard her heartbeat, I would have assumed her to be dead. She is unhealthy and decrepit." Lillian murmured.

She continued to say, "I do see the bigger picture which is her dying and we are attracting attention. You are groping Mira. It seems your excitement about this realm is making you lose focus."

Ruefully she said, "either you send her back or I kill her." Her eyes became dark shades of red.

Mira's eyes had gone wide and her lips slightly agape, "you can't be serious?" It wasn't a rhetorical question but the determined look in the Vampire's eyes was all the confirmation she needed.

Mira began, "If you want to kill her go ahead but" she stood between Lillian and the girl, "you would have to go through me first."

This time it was Lillian's turn to be speechless. She couldn't believe what Mira had said. And she could not be dubious about it either because all supernatural creatures have a sharp hearing. Mira didn't even know the girl and yet she was willing to challenge her for the human sake. Each attempt Lillian took to bypass Mira was futile. The witch kept getting in the way, blocking the Vampire from stepping a foot near the girl.

"Mira that is enough!" Lillian snapped with anger, her eyes were shut and her hands had been balled into a tight fist.

She knew the witch was only trying to help but she was going about this the wrong way. She had abducted someone's slave and if the master comes to know the whereabouts of the slave, they would be facing a lot of issues. They were trying to fit in an unknown environment but it seems with Mira's behaviour they would be exposed before the purpose of their stay had been served. Lillian opened her eyes and Mira no longer stood in front of her. 'Where had she gone to now?' She questioned herself only to hear a painful groan.

"Mira!" Lillian called out. The Witch Queen leaned behind the wall, her face concocted with pain as blood oozed from her lips and forehead.

A minute they were arguing and the next thing she was hurt. "What happened to you? When did you get over there? Why are you bleeding?" She went over to help her friend but the witch raised her hand stopping the Vampire Queen from coming close.

"Don't come any further!" She said with venom.

'What in the creator's realm had gotten in Mira today? She was acting different!' She said to herself.  The yellow sun would soon be out and she wouldn't be able to do anything. During day time in the human realm the Vampires in the house lay dead in coffins to avoid the heat wave, leaving Mira to herself until night falls. It was the only way for them to maintain their strength and not get dehydrated and weak.

Lillian watched the stubborn witch Queen fall back on her knees as she attempted to stand up. She looked so worn out all of a sudden and was still bleeding.  "Dela!" She called out to the witcher. During their stay in the human realm she had come to know about the names of the witcher and his family and a bit of their life back in the human realm.

"Geneva!" which was the wife's name.

Geneva who was close nearby had come running to the vampire Queen. She had seen the human girl at first but didn't pay attention to it because she thought the girl was dead until she heard the two Queens arguing over the girl. Her husband came to him after the second call. "My Queen!" They both greeted her.

"Please help Mira, I don't know what happened to her." Lillian said, looking worried as she gestured to something behind them. They gasped with horror when they turned and saw the witch Queen.

"What happened?" The witcher asked as he rushed to the Queen's aid who was attempting to stand up.

"I don't know! We were arguing over the human girl and the next thing I know Mira was there groaning and bleeding."

"S-she lies!" Mira coughed out blood as the witcher and his wife helped her to the nearest bed which was Lillian's bed.

"What!" Lillian's voice was disconcerting as she watched Mira with keen eyes. Mira had accused her of lying which was unacceptable. "Mira why are you doing this? Is it because of the human girl?"

"You attacked me!" Mira seethed. She looked to be in bad shape and whatever had attacked her must have been quite strong.

Lillian laughed out, why was she surprised at Mira's blatant accusations. Witches were creatures who would lower their dignity to mind games and deceit. "I can't believe this! Me, attack you?" Lillian laughed more. Mira is unbelievable. Such cheap lies she'd cook up just to have her change her mind.

"Don't come near me!" Mira screamed, startling the witcher had his wife. Her scream had also startled Lillian. Mira was agitated and Lillian realized it was best she moved no further. She could not understand Mira's indifference towards her and Mira looked sincere even though she lied through her teeth.

"Go get a bowl of warm water and a towel." The witcher ordered his wife and checked Mira's pulse which was alright except that she had a cut on her lips and head.

"My Queen, tell what exactly happened?" The witcher asked the witch Queen, he himself could not believe that the Vampire Queen attacked her.

"I told you what happened." She winced out when the witcher examined her forehead.

"You have hurt your head and it seems your lips are already healing." He informed the witch who kept wincing at skin contact. Geneva came in with the bowl of water and placed it on a table beside the bed.

The witcher cleaned the witch's bleeding head and lips with the warm towel until there were no traces of blood. And he applied a herb mixture on the Queen's forehead to make it stop bleeding. Mira looked exhausted and completely worn out.

"She is weak!" the witcher said to the Vampire Queen who still stood there with a worried expression.

"How come your energy is drained? Did you use your strength to do magic?" The witcher asked the witch Queen whose eyes were failing to stay opened.

"N-no, it was Lillian." She managed to say and Lillian could not help but roll her eyes.

The witcher could not understand what was going on. The witch Queen was accusing the Vampire Queen of attacking her and the vampire Queen also denies it. The witcher knew how strong the Vampire Queen had become during the course of her pregnancy since he had experienced an attack from her but the Vampire Queen denies it. He didn't have the gift to read people's thoughts or body language but his gut told him something was not right.

"Oh not you too! Don't look at me like that. I didn't do anything!" Lillian hissed not liking the way the witcher looked at her like she was guilty.

"But you did!" The witch Queen whispered. The witcher looked at her worriedly. If the Queen passes out, it would take days for her to recover because it seems most of her energy had been drained and passing out was the only way for her to recover.

"Enough with these lies and accusations. If you don't know stop then I would drag you out of the bed." Lillian retorted dryly and took two steps forward and Mira pushed herself up to lean against the wall.

A frown creased the witcher's brow, "Queen Lillian please don't come close to her. She is too petrified!

"But I did not attack her. If she keeps on insisting then I might as well do it." She said gravely.

"I know it was you!" Mira hissed, "you can see past events or memories from a bite right. Go ahead." Mira added and stretched her arm out towards Lillian.

The witcher was about to protest because Mira had already lost a lot of blood and a little more and she would pass out but it was too late, Lillian had already bitten Mira's wrist. The witcher was getting worried because Mira's eyes were closing and Lillian hadn't let go. He was about to warn her when she let go of Mira's arm.  But Mira had already drifted into unconsciousness.

"Impossible!" Lillian said with shock.

Just then a shrill cry from behind catches their attention. 'Oh great!' Lillian thought of cleaning the traces of blood from her lips with the back of her hand. The human was up and had witnessed the scene before her. The slave girl quivered from fear, her heart was racing loudly and her piercing voice was threatening the Vampire's Queen sanity. The girl ran into the bathroom and locked herself in.

Lillian pinched the bridge of her nose and released a heavy sigh. She just discovered that she had attacked Mira without her knowledge. The soon to be born child had sensed her anger and had taken over Lillian's will and attacked Mira. 'But how was her demon child able to possess her will?' Lillian silently asked herself. This was grave and disheartening. And now she had to deal with a pesky screaming human whose voice was making her stomach churn, it seems the screams bothered the child also. She was one iota from losing it and having an innocent human blood on her hands.
