Chapter 2: 0002: Welcome to DC

Roman managed to make it into the city, but he had to leave his truck along the way. He could tell that the capitol was in chaos from the smoke that billowed into the sky in certain areas and the sounds of gun battles that echoed through the streets. When he neared the White House, his watch flashed and ISAC received an emergency message.

INCOMING ALERT ON THE SHD EMERGENCY CHANNEL, FLASH PRIORITY

"The Base of Operations is under attack. Hostile forces have breached the southern perimeter. We're in need of immediate assistance. Repeat, immediate assistance from any nearby agents," said an unidentified man.

Roman checked his sidearm. He put it back in its holster and pulled his shotgun out. He smirked as he began to move towards the White House. He entered a Christmas village area and heard two voices. He slid into cover nearby.

"Yeah! Motherfucker! Yeah," a man in a gas mask screamed as he kicked a prone figure.

"I'm pretty sure he's dead. You don't have to keep beating him," the other guy said.

"Fuck that! I want whoever finds his body to know not to fuck with the Hyenas," the first guy responded as he kept kicking the corpse.

"Yeah man. Let me help."

Roman sprung over the wall and fired a round at the second guy's head. His head jerked backwards as buckshot shredded his gas mask and punched a hole through his skull. The first guy tried to swing his submachine gun towards Roman, but Roman fired again taking out his kneecap. Roman quickly pulled a knife from his boot and dove forward. The Hyena fell neck first on the knife.

"Hyenas, huh," Roman said as he twisted the knife and slashed the man's throat.

Roman wiped his knife on the back of the Hyena. He stepped over to the dead civilian. He closed his eyes. Roman continued through the village. Near the end, he spotted a couple of Hyenas stationed as a rear guard. An announcement from the White House warned about the attack.

Roman popped up as one of the Hyenas walked too close. The shotgun blast ripped through her gas mask. Her fellow Hyena turned and fired. Roman ducked into cover. He swung the shotgun up and fired a blind shot. The Hyena ducked into cover barely avoided a grim fate.

"You missed me motherfucker," the Hyena shouted.

"Keep talking. I'm reloading," Roman said.

"Ha."

The Hyena rushed out to attack. Roman rose and fired point blank into the Hyena's chest. The thug crashed to the ground with a thud. He placed the barrel to the Hyena's head and squeezed the trigger again. He shook his head as he resumed his trek to the White House.

"Dumbass."

"I've got eyes on a Division Agent heading north towards the White House. Looks like they cut down a group of Hyenas and are headed this way," a female voice said over the emergency frequency.

"Agent, if you can hear us on this frequency, keep pushing forward and blindside these bastards," the man from earlier said.

"Already on it," Roman responded as he continued past a fountain.

He arrived where the bulk of the Hyenas were attacking the main gates. He eased into cover and assessed the situation. The Hyenas were spread out, but they were focused on the White House's defenses. A pair of Hyenas moved into cover close to each other.

"Surprise motherfuckers," Roman said as he lobbed a grenade behind them.

The grenade launched both Hyenas in the air. Roman used his P416 to take down two more in controlled bursts. The Hyenas began to divide their attention between the White House defenses and Roman. The battle was intense, but the Hyenas weren't ready for Roman's methodical assault.

As the last Hyena succumbed to Roman's assault, the JTF started putting out the fires at the gate. Roman approached after ensuring that all of the aggressors were dead. The gates opened and he was ushered in by a JTF member.

"We're glad you showed up when you did. It wasn't looking good," someone said as he walked past.

Roman looked at the White House. It had seen better days. The Green Poison pandemic had been rough. President Waller and Vice President Mendez were both gone. The White House was now the Base of Operations for D.C.

As Roman entered the White House a serious looking man spoke to him, "Hey, thanks for the help out there. I'm Coop."

"I'm Roman. It was my pleasure. They reminded me of some punks I was dealing with before I came to D.C."

"You should check in with Manny, our coordinator, upstairs in the blue room. And stop by if you ever need help with your tech," Coop said.

"Thanks," Roman said as he headed for the stairs. He noticed that the place was in disarray. There were wounded and frightened people scattered around the ground floor. Roman went up the stairs and saw a door with a sign saying Division Coordinator. He opened the door and went in.

A Latino with a goatee walked behind a table with a map on it. He picked up a cowboy figurine. He knocked over a rook with the cowboy.

"This is you. Welcome to D.C.," he stood and shook Roman's hand. "I'm Manny. I run comms."

"Roman."

"I'm guessing the Division alert brought you. Glad to see you. Now let me show you how screwed we are." Manny leaned over the map. "Ever since the JTF imploded, the city has become a playground for murderous fuckheads. There are several main factions and a whole lot of bottom feeders sucking up whatever the big dogs miss."

Roman looked at the pieces and their positions. There were chess pieces and other figurines. Roman looked at the dinosaur standing on a corner of the map and wondered what that could represent.

"A few civilian settlements are still holding out against all this villainy. They need more help than we've been able to provide. Especially since the Division Network went dark," Manny continued.

Roman picked up a knight figurine. Manny paused. He gently took it and explained, "That's Kelso." Roman snickered and crossed his hands behind his back.

"She's one of the last surviving agents in D.C. She's operating out of the Theater settlement on a priority mission. You should go check in with her. If anyone knows how to get these systems back online, it's her."

"Find Kelso at the Theater settlement. Got it," Roman said as he headed for the door.

"Oh and introduce yourself to the locals while you're at it. It'll comfort them to know that there's a new sheriff in town," Manny said as he looked at the map once again.
