Chapter 34: A Little Town

After the experience with the Kang Ape, Kyle walked in the direction he saw the yellow girl go in. While walking through the forest, he came upon a group of Freddies.

The Freddies were distant cousins to the Bobbies. They have several common features in common with the Bobbies, but they lacked the colorful fur and skin.

Like the Bobbies, Freddies were also sentient creatures who spoke the beast language. Kyle asked them if there was a town or village nearby he could go to.

They very kindly lead him to the edge of the forest. They would even bring him fruits, grubs, and edible plants as he traveled through the forest.

They were aware that this weird two-legger was a friend of Jeff's so they treated him very respectfully.

Kyle just thought they were friendly animals. Little did he know that if it weren't for his relationship with Jeff they might have tried to eat him by now.

Bobbies were vegetarians, but Freddies were omnivores. It was a debate about whether to eat other animals or to have a plant-based diet that caused the Bobbies and Freddies to split many thousands of years ago.

Meat eaters thought vegetarians were weak; while vegetarians thought the meat-eaters were vicious and immoral. They had very typical family issues.

As the Freddies were about to leave, one of them came up to Kyle, "Please say hi to Jeff for me the next time you see him.

I'm Cody, and if you could put in a good word for us; we would be really appreciative," Cody said.

"Who's Jeff?" Kyle asked. Cody was surprised but soon recovered. He figured they were such good friends they didn't need to know each other's names.

Perhaps they had sniffed each other and just knew each other by their smells like civilized animals.

"Jeff, he's the Kang Ape you made friends with. He told us not to eat you because you are his friend," Cody said while baring his fangs in a friendly gesture for a Freddie.

To Kyle, it was really intimidating. He smiled back to Cody, "Ok, Cody, the next time I see Jeff I'll let him know.

If you see him first, please tell him that the next time I would like to have a nice chat over some lunch."

Kyle noticed Cody was suddenly nervous, "I'll provide the lunch, so it won't be anyone you know," Kyle promised the Freddie. It seemed relieved and happily disappeared into the woods.

Who wouldn't be happy to know you and your friends and family weren't on the menu?

Standing at the edge of the town, he wasn't in a hurry to enter. As far as he knew; he was in an alien world. The Freddies kept calling him a weird two-legger.

He could never get them to explain why he was weird. The Freddies just said that's what the Bobbies called him. Maybe he looked weird to them compared to other two-legged animals?

It was better for him to get an idea of what was going on before he just dropped into the town. He didn't want to get chased out of town.

That night, Kyle used his new costume to turn invisible. This allowed him to walk into town unnoticed.

Although walking in invisible mode created a visual disturbance; it was much harder to see the visual warping. This is why he decided to explore at night.

While he was in town, he heard the townspeople speaking a language he wasn't familiar with. He found the local tavern. There was also an Inn down the road, but it didn't have any food services.

The tavern only had food and drink. Taverns were good places for gathering information. Kyle snuck into the tavern and slept in the rafter.

The next morning, he awoke to the noise of someone preparing the tavern for business. Kyle observed him quietly from the rafters.

He was an older man with purple hair that had turned light blue at the temples. His yellow skin was pale. He wasn't fat, but he was clearly out of shape with a slight gut.

He wore a very pale blue wool shirt and grey pants. He wore a pair of pattens or overshoes. These were wooden with a leather strap. Kyle thought it looked hard to walk in, but the owner didn't seem to mind it.

Typically pattens were only worn outside, but the owner just came from outside and was too distracted to slip out of his pattens.

Then, he heard a woman speaking to the man in a loud voice. It seemed like she was mad at him about his pattens because he immediately took them off and placed them next to the door.

He saw what he thought was his wife come in to help him prepare for the opening. She looked a little younger than him.

It was clear she had a hard life. There were wrinkles around her eyes and she just looked tired. Her yellow skin didn't help her looks.

It made her look sickly. If she were a little less tired-looking, she would be very pretty.

She was wearing a very drab light pink woolen overshirt, white undershirt, and grey dress. She had an apron over her dress.

Kyle observed the tavern owners and continued to watch the customers as they came and went. He noticed the common pay for things were small copper and silver coins.

He hadn't seen any gold, but that was probably because there was no need to pay in gold for lunch.

Kyle had a lot of gold, so he wasn't worried about having money. He was worried his wealth might be misunderstood. He understood he had a lot of buying power.

Right now, his biggest problems were he had lots of gold but not the type of currently commonly used.

He also didn't understand the language. This meant he couldn't really understand how things worked.

The town seemed fairly poor. He couldn't find a library which you might find in larger towns and villages.

Of course, there was a temple and he saw from his explorations the night before there were books and scrolls there.

Who knows what language those were written in.

Kyle spent the whole day in the rafters observing. After dark, a different kind of crowd came into the tavern. These were probably mercenaries or men who worked hard jobs.

They were there to drink, share stories, and make trouble. Kyle slipped out of the tavern and continued to explore the town. He couldn't find a bank, but he began to understand the standards of the town.

The one problem he needed to overcome immediately was understanding the language. He committed himself to learn the language as quickly as possible.
