Chapter 2: Awakening

Steve could not have felt anything properly throughout his slumber. Everything during it just felt uncomfortable and strenuous. As though he was drifting off in a king-sized bed outside, on a snowy day. Everything about it just felt wrong.

Steve felt as though he was going to puke. A significant bubble of liquid had attempted to reach past his mouth, but something had blocked its exit. He could not open his eyes and he could not breathe through his nose. His whole body had felt as if there were invisible binds holding him frozen stiff in the vast darkness he found himself in.

Finally, he had made the choice to try to move. He could feel his muscles flex out and struggle to shake about, but finally, something broke free. He could feel almost every joint and bone crack as he started to move around in the sensory capsule he had realized he was in, a large glass tube that held him in some sort of liquid.

His eyes continued to struggle to open. He heard a muffled alarm go off as his eyelids strained to lift. Everything was bright blue and blurry, he couldn't see anything further than a foot's length. He extended his arms and felt the thin layer of glass that is confining him in this slumber. No more sleeping, he thought as he was starting to get claustrophobic. He heard his heart begin to race and pound into his ears as his body began to writhe about.

Surely enough, Steve would reel his arms back and tried beat his hands on the glass. One strike after the other. Each strike was harder than the last. Fear slowly consumed his mind. His thoughts would quickly dissolve to the concept that he would be stuck in here forever. He tried to scream but couldn't. His mouth, tongue, and jaw were all fixated to the shape of a mouthguard.

The blue liquid that is surrounding him started to get warmer because of the motion of his body that drew heat. His hands started to hurt the more he hit the glass, but by no means thought of stopping. Finally, he heard a crack with the hardest punch he made. The crack became two cracks. Then three. The cracking started to grow more, as he gave pressure to the liquid, by moving around. Thrashing and wiggling wanting to break free from the confinement he was stuck in.

The glass finally broke. The strange blue liquid poured out, fast and hard. It brought him out of the capsule. His body clumsily slid past the shattered glass which left cuts and scratches all over his nude body. Cold air surrounded Steve, as he fell onto the cold metal floor. Steve tried to scream and cry. His vision had become more clear at this point and could see a tube coming out of his mouth, leading to the top of the capsule. Steve desperately gripped the sides of the breathing tube at his mouth and forced himself as he pulled the breathing tube out of his throat. He could feel his Adam's apple popped back into place as vomit followed the tubing of the tool. He gagged and wretched, spilling out clear bile from his mouth. The taste of the murky liquid was numbing and bitter. The moment he took a deep breath, he began crying and babbling for help. His body shook and trembled. His dark brown hair. now longer than he recalled, matted to his wet skin. He panted and mumbled about as he felt feeling come back to his mouth and tongue.

As Steve's eyes looked up, he could see a man with an assault rifle pointing at Steve. As Steve cried begging for answers the man pulled his smartphone out of his pocket, dialed a number, called the number as he told Steve, "Just stay calm and try to breathe, you'll get the answers you're looking for soon enough." The man's voice was rough but sounded a bit young for what the man's age looked to be. Steve nodded as he struggled to gain control of his lungs.

The phone answered and the man spoke once again, but this time towards the phone, "The chick hatched from the egg. You ready for your next assignment?"

As the man spoke to the phone, Steve was losing the battle for his lungs from hyperventilating and felt himself soon passing out. His heart, which was already pumping hard and fast from the fear overwhelming him, had not been taking in enough oxygen. Steve was drowning in nothing. His lungs were weak without air being forced into it. It was all too much to take in as Steve's eyes started to roll up desperately clung to what life he had left. Soon enough, just as fast as Steve had awoken, he had fallen back into paralysis.

''Hey kid!" the man shouted, in attempts to keep Steve awake "Aagh. Ada, get here NOW!" The man hung up the phone and picked up Steve bringing him to the infirmary. He placed Steve on the hospital bed, turned on a ventilator, and put an oxygen mask on Steve. Sure enough, Steve started to cough out mucus from his lungs and started breathing properly.

The man gave a frustrated sigh, as he put a bottle of water onto the table next to Steve, for when he woke. The man removed the strap of the assault rifle and placed the gun on the corner of the white room. He sighed a heavy sigh as he scratched the back of his head. His eyes glanced at the unconscious body of Steve, knowing this will be a lot to take care of.
