Chapter 3: Jump Scare (Part One)

I continue walking through the cold. I know it's sunny out, but I still can't see. What's with all this fog? Maybe there's a lake or body of water nearby, I just don't know why the fog won't go away.

I hear the howling sound in the direction opposite of where I'm going. It's further away than when I started walking, which makes me relax a bit. As long as I stay away from-whatever that was, I should be okay. I look down at my feet, trying to remember everything that happened before I woke up here.

I remember that my dad had gotten out of jail and was coming to my house. He was mad. My brother, Bryan was scared.

"You need to leave, Dyl," he'd told me.

I was the one who had gotten dad put in jail. I saw him hurt my mom and I couldn't go without saying anything. I'd set up a meeting with an officer, and he tried to kill the officer. Upset he was being accused for abusing someone he claimed he loved. He was so mad, I was for sure he was going to kill me then, but Bryan intervened, he took the hits for me.

Bryan ended up in the hospital for five months after that, with broken limbs and severe depression. Our father had been sentenced to twenty years in jail, but he was only there for five until someone-I don't know who-paid for his release.

We had found out quickly once he was released, and we knew for sure he was going to come after us. But our mom didn't want to leave, delusional she was. She thought she could convince him to forgive us for sending him to jail.

Bryan swore to stay behind and protect our mother, but he was sure that if our dad came home he would kill me. He was furious when he found out it was me who had turned him in for Bryan, and told them about what he'd done to our mom.

A man, willing to kill his daughter.

But what happened after that? I remember Bryan telling me to get away from the house, to either go to our aunt's house or to my boyfriend's home. Then Drew-my boyfriend-came over to help me get where I needed to go. And that's all I remember.

But how did I end up here? If I was with Drew then shouldn't he have been with me? My heart drops into my stomach. Maybe that thing killed him. That'd be awful. I feel nauseous just thinking about it.

I keep walking. My stomach growls and I think about the pear that the Mystery-Boy gave me. My mouth waters at the memory. I wish he'd have given me some more of them.

I hear leaves crunch over to my right, making me stop and look in the direction. I hold my breath for a moment to listen to the sound. Then a set of eyes and a barely visible outline of a person appears about 15 feet away from me.

They let out a low growl and slowly move towards me, I quickly back up. When their speed suddenly quickens I turn and run in the direction I was originally going. This is not how I meant to die.

I can hear the creature, person-whatever it is-gaining on me, but I'm too scared to look back. It's difficult enough to have to watch my feet and make sure I'm not going to trip over anything.

I feel pressure on my back, making me lose my balance. I fall forward, landing on the ground hard enough that it knocks the wind out of me. I turn onto my back, panicked. I look up and feel even more scared. Drew?

His eyes are red and glowing. They look crazy, not like his normal docile look. They're wide, his eyebrows raised and his mouth open, panting from the run.

"Drew?" I ask only to have him growl in return. I watch him move closer, getting down on his knees so that he's hovering over me.

I'm finally able to take a breath just to hold it out of fear. "D-Drew?" I stutter out as he leans his face close to me, his eyebrows drawing together.

"Dylan..." he says my name, a frown on his face like he's mad at me.

"Drew, are you...." before I finish my question, he yells and shoves both of his fists onto the earth an inch away from either side of my head, making me shriek and close my eyes tight.

I'm going to get killed by my boyfriend, what a way to go!

I feel his face get closer. His breath doesn't feel warm. It feels cold. What happened to him?

I refuse to open my eyes. There's no way I'm going to dare look at him. "Dylan..." this time my name comes coaxingly from his lips in a slight sing-song voice. Maybe he wants me to look at him?

Maybe this is a prank? No. Drew wouldn't do something like this to me with everything going on with my dad. Drew may be a trouble maker and a prankster but he's no jerk. He wouldn't do something like this.

I feel his hand gently cup my face on one side, making my eyes open carefully to look at him. His eyes are focused on my lips. But-his hand. He's cold. Unnaturally cold. He feels like the bodies we dissected in my BioMed class. He feels like a dead person. Or am I imagining things?

His eyes snap up to look at mine. I'm so confused. His once chocolate brown eyes are glowing red, dark circles around them. His veins are darkened on his temple and rising up his jaw from his neck. His lips are blue and dry. His once light brown hair is now dark and it looks like it's dying. He looks skinnier than he was last i saw him. But there's no way we've been here long enough for him to lose weight like this. His cheekbones are much more visible and his cheeks sunken in. A low growling noise slowly starts to come from his throat and he scratches my jaw with his-apparently now long-nails.

I wince and turn my face away to evade his hand.

"You betrayed me..." I hear him growl out.
