Chapter 4: Chapter 4:Love?
I kick my boots off the minute I walk through the door to my nice cool home.
"I hate it there."I say, muffled into a pillow.
"Yes it looks like a horrifying place to be in. Now, Kourane go shower. You smell and look like a pig, dear."my mother says.
"Well, let me rest for a little first. And feel the cool air conditioning."I say, rolling my eyes.
"I think she looks beautiful."Liam says, walking through the door after me. My brother walks in a second later.
My brother and Liam go to the main campus of the school. Class 3-E is part of the school, but It's for all the bad kids or the kids who couldn't keep their grades up. And they do put all of the kids who weren't doing well in school there, but it's in the mountains so the other students don't see the octopus and see the students trying to assassinate him.
"Thanks, Liam."I give him a sarcastic smile.
"Nope. Mother's right. You do look like a pig."my brother says, laughing.
"Which one of us is the one who knows how to kill someone and easily make it look like an accident?"I say, smiling back at him.
"Both of us, actually."he says.
"Mhm, but with your clumsiness and worms for a brain, you could never do it."
"Oh please. I could do it faster and more sufficient than you."
I laugh. "That's funny. Oh you've done it this time, brother."
"Kiro, Kourane! Do not speak in such a way."my mother scolds us.
"Yeah, are you guys really arguing over who would be able to make murder look like an accident?"Liam asks, sliding down the couch, a little further away from us.
Liam knows all about what I can do. And what Kiro can do. Kiro was also trained in and was taught everything I was. However, it was pretty obvious I was better at this. I'm good with hand-to-hand combat. Kiro is better with guns, though. He has a lot of tricks with them.
I don't need weapons to defend my myself. I am a weapon.
"The maid has prepared a meal for you. Kourane shower when you're done."My mother says and heads upstairs.
I sit at the table and the maids bring out plates full of sushi.
I say thank you to all of them, then I take my chopsticks and eat the delicious food.
"So, Kourane."Liam says, not looking up from his plate. "Have you um...met anyone you..like?"
"What?"I ask. This is..different.
"I mean like there must be a lot of talented people up there. With good skills like you."he says. This time he doesn't look up, but he grabs the chopsticks and pops a sushi on his mouth.
"No. They're all very good at fighting, but no where near as good as me. I was trained by real professionals. They were trained by an octopus."I grab another sushi and put it in my mouth.
"Oh. Alright. How about anyone you think is...good-looking?"he asks, laughing nervously and awkwardly.
Kiro bursts out laughing. "He's scared you like someone becuase he likes you."
I look at Kiro, then at Liam who's turned the color of my red nails. "Liam, I don't like anyone. I don't have time for love, I have a mission. I can't do that if I have feelings for someone."
"R-right. I know. I was just curious."He slumps in his seat.
I care about my family, that includes Liam. But not the way he cares about me. I see him as a younger brother, even though he's older than me, or a cousin that I'm close with. If I start to have romantic feelings, that'll just get in my way of achieving my goal. Which is saving the world. And that's much more important than feelings.
"Ugh, the tension is this room is practically impossible not to feel. Even the maids and butlers feel it."Kiro says.
"And what do you want me to do about that?"I say. I just want to eat and go shower.
"Nothing. You've done enough."he turns to Liam. "So, Liam, did you give that girl in chemistry your number?"
Liam turns to look at him, confused. I look at him confused, too.
Liam? Giving a girl his phone number? Someone actually likes him? No offense to Liam.
Liam isn't unattractive. It's actually the contrary, He's very handsome. He has brown, curly hair that sits on top of his head. They look golden in the sunlight, too. And he has honey brown eyes that also look beautiful in the sun. He has tan skin and doesn't have a body as fit as mine or Kiro's, but it still looks very refined.
The thing with Liam is, he's very awkward with girls. It's hard for him to talk to them without stuttering out every word. And he doesn't catch the attention of most girls, too.
Something clicks in Liam and he says, "Ohh, that girl. No, I didn't. But she kept asking for it."
"A girl? Really? What does she look like?"I ask with a smitten look. I know what they're trying to do. They're trying to make me jealous.
A look of panic crosses both their eyes and they try to hide it. But I'm not stupid.
"Um...well she's very...pretty."Kiro says.
"Yes and she has black hair."Liam says. Then he looks at my black hair. "I mean it's brown, but it looks black.
"Mhm. Sounds very I interesting."I say with a smile, knowing that I was correct.
"Yes and she has very pretty green eyes."Kiro says.
I laugh. "Oh please. You both are lousy liars."
I stand up stretch my arms out.
"We're not lying. You're just jealous."Kiro says.
I smile and flip my hair over my shoulder. "Whatever you say."
Liam has gone completely silent and is looking at his sushi sadly. Oh no. I've made him really upset.
Liam loves sushi. More than a person should be capable of. So for him to look at it sadly means that he's seriously sad.
I scoff and put a hand to my forehead. "Liam, you know that I care about you, but I can't have any relationships. Not now. Not when the world is on the verge of ending."
He doesn't look at me. "Yeah, I know. I'm fine, Kourane. I understand."
I sigh and head upstairs to shower.
"Your bath is ready, Miss."Lidia says when I get upstairs.
"Thank you, Lidia."I smile at her and go to the bathroom.
Lidia has worked for my mother for a long time. She was an orphan and had no where to go. She ended up working for Mother and hasn't left her side since.
Mother gave her a home to stay. Lidia has always been grateful for her.
She was there when Liv, Kiro, and I were born. She's always been kind and sweet. Sometimes she gives me advice. She's like another mother to me.
While my real mother showed me to be strong and never let your guard down, Lidia taught me to be grateful for everything I have. To always be considerate of others. You don't have to trust, you just don't have to hate them either.
I peel off my clothes and step in the bath. The cool water feels good after being up on the mountain everyday.
I close my eyes and think about what I said to Liam. And how he feels.
Liam is a really caring person. He has a good heart. He's kind to everybody and has a lot of friends.
There was this one time, it was when we had barely met, me and him were walking down the street. He wanted to get to know me, but I didn't really care.
These two big guys came out of no where and started to hit on me. Obviously, they were no match for me, but Liam didn't know this. He knew I was a skilled fighter, but he didn't know just how much I was.
They tried to grab me and Liam tried to fight for me. There twice his size and he knew he couldn't beat them. But he still cough anyway. For me. Someone he didn't even know. It puzzled me at first. But I understand why now.
I hold my breath and lay back, letting myself go in the water. I open my eyes a little and watch the ceiling from underwater. It's so quite down here. The water feels good. It's kind of soothing.
I sense someone coming up to me and I sit up again.
"Are you alright, dear?"Lidia asks me. She has my towel and a robe in her hand.
"Yes. Thank you, Lidia."I respond.
"Of course."She sets them down and looks at me. "I heard the conversation."
I stare at the water. "Hm."
"You did the right thing, Kourane. You're saving the world."She says.
"I know."
She smiles. "Not loving someone doesn't make you a bad person. Feelings are a strange thing. You don't see him the way he sees you. That's not a bad thing."
"Thank you, Lidia. I needed that."I look up at her and smile.
She smiles back and turns around.
I did need that.
