Chapter 177: The Third Trial
Adam was rushed into the infirmary quickly.
"Please! Help!" [Erik]
Barging into the room, he found the nurse already preparing a bed as if she knew Adam's situation beforehand.
"Put him here!" [Nurse]
Heeding her instructions, Erik gently placed Adam onto the bed.
"Carter, analyze!" [Nurse]
Upon uttering those words, a spherical machine flew into the room. It seemed to be made like a glass ball, minus the little air thrusters below that kept it airborne. If inspected enough, one could find a piece of tape on it with Carter written on it.
"Order received. Commencing protocol activation." [Carter]
The bot flew over Adam, hovering while emitting green lines of light that covered the bed.
"Analyzing… Processing… Analysis complete. Sending data." [Carter]
The nurse rushed over to a desk across the room and picked up an electronic tablet.
"This…" [Nurse]
She returned to Adam's side and placed her hands over his stomach.
"Mend." [Nurse]
It didn't seem like anything was happening. The nurse simply stood over Adam as a strained look came over her face.
"What is she…" [Erik]
Just as he was about to speak, a hand came over his mouth. Turning his head, Erik saw Mr. Frank.
"Hush. Let her concentrate." [Mr. Frank]
With a quiet nod, Erik was released.
("What's going on?") [Erik]
He mouthed the words to Mr. Frank who somehow read his lips.
("Let's head out.") [Mr. Frank]
Pointing to the door, he led Erik outside the infirmary. Once outside, Erik spoke first.
"So? What's happening inside there?" [Erik]
"Adam's mana pool got damaged." [Mr. Frank]
Hearing that, Erik seemed to get a bit nervous.
"To what extent?" [Erik]
"No clue. I'm not a doctor." [Mr. Frank]
Erik gave Mr. Frank an unhappy look.
"Then do you know the cause? There isn't any way a steel beam is going to damage a person's mana pool." [Erik]
Mr. Frank sighed.
"Blame your school. The details of what I was supposed to make was to infuse the building for the event with mana repulsion materials. It's to preserve the building, but it most likely inverted the effects of mana strengthening on Adam." [Mr. Frank]
"Wait. Adam knows mana strengthening? Isn't he in the first year?" [Erik]
Mr. Frank nodded.
"Indeed. We haven't taught it yet, but I think he instinctively used it." [Mr. Frank]
Erik was in disbelief.
"Is he a genius?" [Erik]
Mr. Frank scoffed.
"Can't be. He's stupid. However, that stupidity is what keeps him alive." [Mr. Frank]
He chuckled. That is, until the ground shook and sirens began to wail.
"Warning. Level 8 threat detected. Please evacuate the area." [???]
Students filled the halls, most of them hurrying to a shelter. Mr. Frank took one glance at them before grabbing onto Erik.
"Hey, what's your name?" [Mr. Frank]
"Erik." [Erik]
"Erik. Leave this place to me. Go look for the shelter. Now." [Mr. Frank]
Erik had a conflicted look on his face. He wasn't sure whether to stick around for Adam, or listen to Mr. Frank's advice.
"I'm a teacher at Pegasus High. Namely, Adam's teacher. Just go." [Mr. Frank]
"..." [Erik]
He nodded silently, then joined the swarm of students. Mr. Frank then took out an electronic cigarette and began to smoke it.
("...Huh?") [Mr. Frank]
He felt something strange within the infirmary, causing him to peek through the door.
"What the…" [Mr. Frank]
His eyes widened as he saw a purple rift in the air behind the nurse. It appeared that the nurse didn't notice it yet, seeing as she was still working on Adam's injury.
("...Is that a dungeon entrance? No, it's too small.") [Mr. Frank]
Quietly entering the infirmary, he noticed something about the rift. The purple rift shuddered, and a figure only familiar to Adam and perhaps Felix came out.
"...A little girl?" [Mr. Frank]
She appeared to be holding an umbrella, and clothed in a black dress. Her eyes seemed to hold darkness within, churning as if it were the void itself.
"Hello? Who are you?" [Mr. Frank]
Though he asked her a question, the little girl didn't respond. Instead, she moved over to Adam and leaned over him.
"The third trial starts now." [Little Girl]
