Chapter 2: Mission Mysterious Girl
Five months later
Nightwing's POV
Thursday, 11:00 PM
"Remind me again, why are we on this mission?" whined Wally.
Artemis slapped him upside his head.
"Ow, what?"
"Didn't you listen to what Batman had told us back at the cave?"
"Uhhhmmm, I lost track?"
Artemis pinched the bridge of her nose and sigh in annoyance.
Nightwing laughed. The team was on a mission from Batman, to track down a mysterious girl who has been running about New York City killing Innocent animals and for some reason, cheerleaders. Nightwing guessed that whoever this girl is, she sure is not a very cheery person. So the five of them (Kaldur is at Atlantis visiting his family) and Wolf were sent out in the Bioship to find this girl and bring her to Mount Justice for interrogation.
"All right everyone, let's go over the mission, again," Nightwing said glaring at Kid Flash and pull up a hologram, "We are going to New York City, Manhattan to look for a girl who has been killing random innocent animals and cheerleaders" He pulled up a picture of a masked figure with raven-black hair wearing a dark hoodie. "And this is what the suspect looks like. As you can see, the picture does not provide for us any clue of what her facial appearance is, so this mission really tests us of our awareness. So keep your eyes peeled."
The Team nodded in understanding and the Bioship started to descend.
They split up to cover more grounds with Megan and Artemis searching Midtown, Superboy and Wolf to Uptown, and Nightwing and Kid Flash in Downtown.
----Time skip to 30 mins later-----
'Uh, any sigh of her yet?' Wally whined through the telepathic link.
'Will you shut up, Kid blabber? You have been complaining about this for the last 30 minutes! Since the start of the mission!' Artemis exclaimed through the link.
'We have to keep looking, so everyone sharpened up your senses.' Nightwing said not taking his eyes off the streets below from the rooftop.
'Wait, I think I found our suspect,' Superboy said
'Great! We will meet you there. In the meanwhile, keep a close watch on her, don't let her out of your sight, and don't let her suspect someone's watching her.' Nightwing said as he and Kid Flash runs from rooftops to rooftops toward the direction of Superboy and Wolf.
They were surprised to find a girl no older than 16 with a bat in hand, her back towards them, fighting a group of very large dogs.
'Dude, what is her problem with dogs? And what type of dogs are those? They are huge!' Wally said
'Thank you for stating the most obvious, Kid Obvious!' Artemis said rolling her eyes at her boyfriend.
'Guys, give it a break will ya? Some of us are still single here!' Nightwing said scowling at the arguing couple.
'I hate to say it Nightwing, but last time I checked, you are the only one who is still single and Kaldur is not here.' Megan put in carefully.
'Oh, right...Back to the mission.'
Nightwing ignored his teammates' snickering and continued to stare at the girl as she fought the dogs.
As Nightwing watched, the large dogs seem to have realized that the girl is not someone they can beat and one by one they ran off into the distance. The girl panted and straightened herself. When she turned, Nightwing had noticed that her bat was missing and nowhere to be found. That was strange, maybe she hid it...Nightwing thought.
Then She turned fully around and Nightwing forgot how to breathe. Even with her mouth and nose covered, the girl looked unreal. Her eyes were the color of sea-green, calm yet dangerous, like the sea. The girl tilted her head and looked in their direction, her eyes betraying no emotion.
"Come out, I know you are there," she said, her voice as calm as her eyes.
'How did she know?' Artemis exclaimed through the link.
'Let's find out. Megan, stay hidden and be ready for a surprise attack.' Nightwing ordered.
They walked out of their hiding place, fully alert and on guard. But the girl just looked...bored, like she faced these every day. She sighed and turned her head toward the space above Wally's head.
"Miss Martian, please make yourself visible." And there goes our plan of having a surprise attack.
Megan appeared right above Wally's head. Okay, who is this girl and how did she know that?
"Who are you and why would you kill these innocent animals?" Nightwing asked gingerly, taking cautious steps towards the girl.
"Yeah, and why are you killing Cheerleaders too? What have they done to you?" Wally chimed in.
"Oh, so that's what you see. Uh, sometimes I hated the mist, they just confuse you mortals and let us half-bloods take all the blame for what every the mist shows." the girl said is an annoyance and rolled her eyes.
Nightwing couldn't understand half of what she said. Half-bloods? Mist? Mortals? Aren't all humans mortals? She sounded like she herself isn't one. She didn't look alien, nor did she appeared to be a meta. Yet as Nightwing got closer, he felt a strange powerful wave of aura coming from her. Yep, she is definitely not a meta but something else.
"Who are you?" Nightwing asked again, stopping five feet away from her.
The girl tilted her head again, her eyes showed with amusement. "Now, I can't you that can I? Besides, I should be the one asking you why are you spying on me?"
"Lady do you have a problem?" Wally asked, "We are the superheroes who are trying to stop murderers like you from further harming the people of this world! So if you would surrender right now and allow us to bring you back for interrogation, or else would bring you back by force and I assure you, you do not want that."
"Are you sure about that, Kid Bluff? Cuz I can take all of you down without even breaking a sweat."The girl snorted and got into a fighting stance. Oh God, she meant business.
Wally liked the knuckled head he is, zoomed forward and throw a punch at her, but to Nightwing and the rest of the team's surprise, the sea-green eyed girl caught the blow and twisted the speedster's arm, making his fall. She did all of this in a second.
She glanced at the rest of them as if waiting for them to attack. So they did.
Nightwing would be lying if he says he was not even a bit surprised. The girl fought like a demon, her moves were graceful and unpredictable. He also noticed that all the girl's moves were unconscious, like she could do all of this in her sleep.
She was right. In a minute or so, all of them were lying on the floor groaning and twisting, including Nightwing. Man, was this girl strong.
"Look, guys, this was fun and all but I really have to go, my protective older brother would throw a tantrum if I don't get enough sleep tonight." She shuddered and muttered, "wouldn't want that to happen again..." And off she skipped and out of sight.
Great, just great. They failed their mission, they failed to capture a girl.
Oh, gods, Batman is gonna give him the death glare.
