Chapter 7: Chapter 7 - Fear and Hope

Sarah and Andrea continued their trek in the woods for a long time. By now, the sun was starting to shine over the treetops.

"why is it so important that we have to free magic?", Sarah asked. She was half-hearted to leave the island after rescuing her family without going through all the trouble of freeing the island. Not so heroic, but she was a survivor, and survivors aren't always heroes.

" what do you think this is, Sarah? Harry Potter? This isn't a damn book, Sarah. We have to free magic, its the only way. Without magic, the human world will perish. Ever thought about the phrase 'nature' s magic'? Well its the other way around. Nature exists because magic does. And if nature isn't available, do you think any animals and/or humans will survive? ", Andrea said, the way professors lecture students.

" Er, no... So, how long till we get there? ", Sarah asked.

" i don't know, honestly. I have never been to magic mountain before. ", Andrea said, shrugging.

" great, my only guide doesn't have a clue-", Sarah stopped, she heard rustling nearby.

She put a hand on Andrea's shoulder to stop her. Sarah listened intently, trying to figure out if they were being followed. More rustling. Sarah nocked an arrow and pointed in the direction of the rustling. The sound became more and more intense and out stepped out the person she most expected, but was surprised all the same. Thomas. She was going to let her arrow fly, but something stopped her. Her hand started shaking and even though she knew he deserved it, she just couldn't even think of killing him. And there she stood, feeling stupid about letting her chance go.

Andrea drew her sword.

"no wait! Please don't! It wouldn't leave me alone. You have to help me!", he begged.

"yeah, right", Sarah mocked.

"no no no... You've got it all wrong! I don't want to hurt you, really. she wants to. Please don't hurt me. ", he said shivering.

Sarah was starting to lose it now. She dropped her bow, pushed Thomas against a tree and put the knife at his throat.

"give me one good reason why i shouldn't hurt you", Sarah said, keeping her voice steady. Here she was, with her mother's murderer and she was having second thoughts about ripping his throat out.

"i... I... I know where she keeps them... Your family.",he stammered.

"talk", Sarah said, gritting her teeth, the arrow tip now breaking his skin. A little more pressure and she will draw blood.

"aahh.. Ok ok. She.. She feeds of off me, off my fear, my regret, my pain. She comes in my dreams, filling it with darkness, taking control of it. She controlled me, forced me into breaking in here, trapping magic and play the charade of a madman.",he said trembling. His eyes cleared with each word, like he was gaining more and more confidence.

Sarah had no clue what this guy was talking about. She didn't dare believe him.

" who is 'she' ", Sarah asked, unsure.

" d.. Dark magic", he said, forcing out the words and covering his mouth with his hands like he just swore in front of his mother.

"yeah, like i am going to believe that.", she said and hit him on his head hard, knocking him unconscious. He sank onto the ground where he laid lifeless.

"what should we do about him?", Sarah asked Andrea who was to surprised to answer. She was staring at Thomas, her mouth wide open, as if she just uncovered some big truth.

"what?", Sarah asked.

"don't you get it? It all makes sense now!", Andrea jumped up excitedly.

"you seriously don't believe this crap.", Sarah said, her voice laced with disbelief.

"this has got to be it! No one just murders a women because of a teenage heart break! You do know the story of magic and dark magic, don't you?", she asked

"uhh.. Cant say i do.", Sarah said truthfully.

"well... In the beginning, there were two rulers. Dark magic and magic. Also know as Fear and Hope. Fear ruled the dark domain.. Like night, for example. And Hope ruled the good and light domain. It was all cool for a while, until Fear decided that she had the worser domain because all creatures and humans resented the darkness. She tried to overthrow Hope. Which led to a great and mighty duel and the usual stuff. Hope won, and imprisoned Fear on an island in the darkest depths of the ocean. But even from there,Fear spreads out, affecting minds of people, driving them crazy, or even controlling them, if they are too weak. I guess that's what happened with Thomas here. ", Andrea said, finishing with a dramatic sigh.

" so... This hope, its the life force of magic isle? ", Sarah asked.

" yep, the very one we met."

"you really sure about this?"

"i really am. All of us in camp know this story. I am positive of it. Come on, trust me. Give him a chance. Maybe he is telling the truth."

"well what if he is lying? What if hes tricking us?"

"just give him a chance", Andrea repeated. She yawned, "we'll talk about this after a quick nap?"

Sarah could see that Andrea was also no that sure, but was trying to believe it.

"fine. But let's at least tie him up first.", Sarah said

Andrea nodded. They grabbed some vines and tied him to a tree. Andrea said she would take first watch. Sarah fell asleep before her head touched the ground.

She dreamed that she was falling. All around her, darkness shrouded her like a blanket. All her fears, regrets and guilts creeped up to her, threatening to break her soul. She snapped out of it when she saw someone else falling alongside her. She couldn't make out who it was in the darkness , but somehow she knew it was Thomas. And that she was in his mind, his dream.

'aah.. Tommy...', someone drawled, someone who was very much feminine. Sarah shivered, she couldn't make out where the voice was coming from, but it made her feel cold, like she was drowning in a frozen lake.

'so alone. So weak. So perrrfect',the voiced continued. 'very little darkness in you, though. But no matter, there is one teensy little speck of deep darkness in you... That's all i need. Now you shall be mine. Go. Go take your revenge, kill that no-good lady. Then slowly, you will get me my revenge.', she laughed.;a laugh so evil that Sarah felt it vibrating in her brain, her heart, her very soul.

***

She woke up screaming, covered in sweat.
