Chapter 32: Rankings and mysterious Jack

"Enough of story time. I have an important event to attend and you have too get back to your guardians, don't you?"

"Yes""Yes"" Yes""Yes"" Yes""Yes"" Yes""Yes"" Yes""Yes" "Yes""Yes"" Yes""Yes"" Yes""Yes"" Yes""Yes"" Yes""Yes" "Yes""Yes"" Yes""Yes"" Yes""Yes"" Yes""Yes"" Yes""Yes"

A chorus of yes rang out through the campfire before the children got up from their places and left. I closed my eyes and sensed that I was at full capacity in terms of physical capability and chi pool. I got up and started walking towards the military barrack after asking for the exact time from a local who was known for his extremely accurate ability to tell time from the position of the sun, the season and heat.

It seems that I have exactly 21 minutes to kill before I need to attend this tournament. If I arrive 10 minutes Early, I still got 11 minutes to kill. I can't meditate here and walking all the way back to my little personal igloo and back would take to long. Damn, if I knew this was gonna happen, I would have continued after darkseid and into the evil spirit of mind. Brainiac. The one who wiped out the entire Earth kingdom in an attempt to kill the avatar.

The soldiers in the barracks would be all uptight as well, they are really bad conversationalists in my opinion. I would have to break my back carrying the conversation. I guess that is the price of political power. So I lugged my mentally bored body towards the military barrack where I saw Sokka standing with a boomerang in his hand and a face painted mask hanging on his hip. It was the exact same as the show but I felt that he hadn't shown enough maturity to earn such a privilege yet but who am I to judge.

I saw everyone wearing battle armor or light chainmail while I was wearing black undershirt and a orange coat/hoodie thing since the monk clothes were tedious to change in and out off and it was seriously tight in many areas. I was still wearing the monk pants since they are far more comfortable and battle orienteered for some odd reason. Plus I was wearing black boots that didn't match my outfit at all but I never gave a flying fuck about fashion before, why should I care about it now in a pre medieval world of literal super powered individuals?

I was noticed after a few seconds of me observing everybody there and trying to rate their threat level but I couldn't see either Pakku or Chief anywhere here even though there is only half an hour left before a once a century event. I mean they had skirmish's in the past but a full on attack with troops in full glory hasn't happened for nearly 50 years. Also I noticed nearly 10 full fighting grids all positioned in a way as if too hold multiple matches at once.

I felt a presence approach me and I turned around to see a friendly looking guy with a goatee, sharp features and a pony tail.

"Hello Avatar Aang. We were informed that you would also be participating, congrats in being the absolute youngest to ever be included in this tournament in all of our history at the young young age of 12. The previous record was held by Sokka here at 15. My name is Kinto. Nice to meet you."

"Hey kinto. Nice to meet ya as well. You seem experienced enough to tell me how the matches are conducted and how are people ranked?"

"Well, it is a random grid of opponents and we have a few outliers and elders who skip a few rounds and enter in the later rounds. If you win, you move on. You lose, you fight another person who lost until you either lose or win. Placements are decided this way and ties aren't allowed. If a tie is declared, the chief or the elders must give a winner."

"Won't That take all day?"

"Why do you think we gathered here? In a military Barack? Because we have multiple rounds happen at the same time. So while #78 is fighting #77 we can watch the most interesting one like #3 vs #4. At max capacity, we run 9 matches at once. Though we slowly reduce the number of matches in the background in the higher rounds and the fight for first is always the only one at one time.

"Thanks for telling me. When was the last time you guys had a battle like this? And who won? Chief? Pakku?"

"Well it was nearly 50 years ago. They were going to raid a troop formation and they wanted the noobie to get a glimpse of fighting in the tournament. I wasn't personally there but it is said that master pakku elegantly beat every single of his opponents."

"Oh so pakku won?"

"No he lost."

"Really? Who won then??"

"A dark horse if you will. It is tradition to not speak of HIM during any festivities. It is said that he was the greatest prodigy of all time but he refused to show his face. We know nothing about his face, hair anything really beside his name. One day. The elder council basically asked that he show his face to them privately for safety reasons but he refused and deserted us. We never heard from him again."

"Wait really? What was his name?"

"Jack."

"Wait isn't jack a common name."

"No it isn't? No one has ever heard of him."

Wait a moment. First that Ashley girl and now this Jack. These didn't exist in canon. The names are very common in my world but not here. Hell they as well be what Russian is to Americans as it is too These people to Ashley and Jack.

Something fishy is going on here and I am not talking a bit the fish being grilled next to me. But I may as well have one since I haven't eaten in 4 hours and this will be a long haul instead of a quick sweep.
