Chapter 2: Beverly

'Hey, Bev.' Caroline waved. 'How are you doing? Did you bring the history project?'

Beverly raised her eyebrows and nearly doused herself with the coffee she had just picked up from the vending machine. "What the hell is she talking about"

'Um, no. I didn't have time.' She scratched her head. 'I forgot.' She shrugged and continued walking, as if she had no idea what was Caroline talking about. 'It doesn't matter.'

'Come on, Beverly. You know that's important. And Professor Keating is not a joke. You don't want to be expelled just before we graduate, do you?

'Whatever.'

Beverly was the complete opposite of Caroline. The typical rebel who doesn't care about anything. Not even if she fail an exam, gets summoned to the director's office or has an expulsion warning.

The two of them were so different and so identical at the same time. They understood each other so well. There was an indestructible connection between them. A relationship that seemed to be universal and beyond the ordinary friendship. They could understand each other with just one word, and sometimes even with just a glance. Some of their acquaintances called them the weirdos . 'Are you two psychics or something?' They used to ask them and then began to push each other and giggle.

'You really need to put your stuff together.' Caroline began to encourage her. 'We'll explain to him that you didn't feel well, and you'll hand him the project over tomorrow. We will come up with something. We always do. Right?'

Partly, Caroline was the reason Beverly wasn't expelled from school yet. She always did her best to help and encourage her, to get her out of trouble with such creative explanations. Only the fact that she was the excellent student of the class and she was still hanging out with Beverly was the thing that got her out of trouble several times.

The teachers thought it was too crazy and unrealistic for such an intelligent girl like Caroline to hang out and be friend with the class rebel-Beverly and they tried to explain it all to themselves with the reason that maybe the girl was going through a difficult time or something and she would get better soon. "Maybe Caroline was even helping her." They thought.

Once, they had caught Beverly in the principal's office. In extracurricular time! She had found a way to unlock the door and sneak in unnoticed. She never explained to them exactly what she was doing in there.

She was warned that a meeting would be held and is very likely for her to be expelled by tomorrow. Tomorrow! They also ordered her to contact her parents and tell them to come immediately. Of course, she didn't. There was no contact with a parent in her personal records, nor had anyone ever attended any of the parent meetings.

She was coming from a family with not such a good reputation. Her mother was a drug addict, who used her young daughter to beg strangers for money on the streets when she was no more than five years old. Money she spent on drugs.

Little Beverly was starving for days. She never knew who her father really was. Her mother never spoke to her about him. And when Beverly was old enough for these conversations, it was too late. Her mother had been jailed on a number of charges and no release was expected any time soon. Beverly was then given to a foster family.

She rarely stayed more than two months with a family. They all claimed that she was too unrestrained and they can not re-educate her.

"But wasn't that the reason foster families take children?! To take care of them and teach them to.. anything?"

Therefore, there were no contacts for the current family caring for her in the school report. They weren't even sure if there was one. But Beverly still had to eat, didn't she?

The next day, Caroline did her thing again and managed to get her out of the impossible situation she got herself into by telling the deputy director,

"Mrs Slone, I really truly apologize for my friend's behaviour , Beverly Collins. There has been a big misunderstanding. The truth is that Mr. Hamilton (the school principal) had promised to give her an article related to our history class. Beverly had to use the article to write a report. But Mr. Hamilton has forgotten, which is perfectly understandable, he is an extremely busy man, so Beverly decided to take it by herself. We realize how stupid and reckless this is. Her action cannot be justified in any way. But please. I'm begging you. Have mercy on her. Only this time. We are almost at the end of the school year and she really wants to finish her education. It's just that sometimes ... she acts before she thinks. "

After the conversation with the deputy principal, which lasted almost an hour, Caroline managed to get her friend out of trouble again. But the deputy director had let her know that this would certainly be the last time she was forgiven.

She also warned her that she would be watching Beverly closely, and after the next offense, she wouldn't think twice to call the council and Beverly will be expelled immediately. 'There won't be next time.' Caroline rushed to answer. 'I promise.' Mrs Slone gave her the look. ' I mean WE promise.'

'Bev, what the hell is wrong with you?!' Caroline asked angrily, tossing the textbooks on the table. 'Do you have any idea what it cost me to get you out of this situation?' She pointed to the director's office.

'You made it?' Almost a smile crept across her face. Caroline didn't answer. She just shook her head.

'What the hell were you looking for in Hamilton's office?'

'Well... it's complicated.'

'No more than the situation I was in ten minutes ago.' She raised her eyebrows and folded her arms, waiting for explanation.

'Okay.' She took a deep breath. 'I was caught smoking weed last week. And Hamilton confiscated it.'

'You can't be serious. Tell me you are not serious, Bev?'

'So…' Beverly continued talking. 'I was wondering if I would be able to find in..in his office.' She looked at Caroline innocently. 'It must be there. I mean.. Where else could it be? That bastard has no idea how much these things cost.

'God, Beverly! Did you just lose your mind?' Caroline put her head in her hands. 'Please, tell me you have. Because that would be the only way I will understand how stupid you have been! Do you have any idea what would have happened if they found out about that? The reason you have been in there today? I don't even know how you're still here after they caught you smoking.. Oh God.' Caroline was speechless.

'You're impossible, Beverly. Impossible. I'm not even kidding.'

Beverly brushed back the black lock of hair that had fallen in front of her eyes. Then took a sip of coffee, pretending not to hear what Caroline is saying about the project and the plan and anything else related to school.

Then she cursed, as the coffee hadn't cooled yet and she burned her tongue. On the top of all that, she spilled half of the hot drink all over her black sweatshirt with a white skull in the middle. And of course, Caroline was the one to take the blame by, in Beverly's words 'talking stressful things and distracting her at that early hour. 8am.'

She lit a cigarette angrily. She had a reason to hate everyone on the planet today. It doesn't take a lot with her.

'It doesn't matter. Whatever you say.'

The two girls entered the classroom.
