Chapter 3: Awkward

Kai stood still for a moment, his mind racing a million miles per minute, how could things have gotten any worse? Usually when Kai had a messy night, he never saw that person again, but here Jinn was, not to mention he was Kai's manager. With everything in him, Kai pulled himself together and accepted Jinn's handshake. Jinn's smile grew wider as Kai shook his hand, and Kai quickly pulled his hand away, the feel of Jinn's big warm hand sending a chill through his body. Kai awkwardly nodded his head, showing respect to his manager even though he was staring at the floor. Quickly turning around, Kai power walked out of the breakroom, he couldn't get out of there fast enough.

Kai was far away from the breakroom when he heard his name being called, "Kai!...Hey Kai!" Kai groaned silently, knowing it was Jinn as he stopped walking.

Kai turned around and Jinn was walking toward him with coffee in his hand, "What did he want?" Kai thought, thinking there could only be one thing he wanted to talk about.

"Hey there, you left out so quickly I didn't get a chance to.." Jinn said, but Kai cut him off.

"Look, there is a time and a place, and this is definitely not the time or the place." Kai said staring at the floor. A smirk creeped onto Jinn's face as he got closer and closer to Kai until they were only a foot apart. Kai exhaled heavily and looked up at Jinn who stood about six inches above him. The smirk on his face surely meant he was up to something.

Jinn lifted his arm, and reached out his hand toward Kai, "Your coffee." He said as his smirk turned into a smile revealing his adorable dimples.

Kai closed his eyes a for a moment and opened them back, pulling the corners of his mouth tight, feeling quite embarrassed. He grabbed the coffee out of Jinn's hand somewhat snatching it, softly saying "thanks." and continued down the hall until he got to his desk.

"This is bad." Kai thought, and the smile that Jinn always gave him never made him feel any better. He had to be angry about being left like that didn't he? Being friendly was something Jinn had to be because they were now coworkers, but it didn't make Kai feel any less weird about it, it was probably best to avoid him as much as possible.

The week had passed and it was now Friday, Kai had done his best to avoid Jinn, whether it was avoiding the breakroom, working away from his desk in a secluded area or leaving work as soon as his shift ended.

The time was now about 4:37pm and Kai was finishing up his design for Tomo Kan's new business building of the future. Tomo Kan industries was a billionaire women's product company from Japan and they were ready to set up shop in America. Kai's expertise had been requested with his bachelor's degree in architectural design and people were well aware he had graduated at the top of his class. He had several letters of recommendation that floated around quickly before he even graduated so finding a job was no issue at all.

Kai had been working on Tomo Kan's building structural design for the last month and was on his final draft. Kai lightly sketched on his drawling pad, filling in any lines that were missing and suddenly his computer crashed, causing his drawling pads screen to short circuit.

"No! Nnnoooo!" Kai yelled, jumping up and panicking, unsure what to do. His computer was nonresponsive when he tried to turn it back on and his drawling pad seemed as if it had fried. Kai dragged both his palms down his face, his breath heavy, he could only hope that the computer hadn't fried all of his work because if it had, he would be in trouble.

"Hey Kai, what's wrong? I heard you freaking out over there." his coworker John said coming over from his desk.

"Please tell me you know how to reboot my computer without having to master reset it. It just short circuited on me." Kai said desperately.

John stretched his mouth to one side, pretty much giving Kai the impression that he was fucked. "Ugh, where's your other drawling pad and laptop that you use at home? Ask Jinn if you could run home to get it so you can finish your work."

Kai put his head in his hand, covering his eyes, "We're not all as rich as you John, this was my only one that I paid good money for."

"Oh shit, well let me see what I can do." Said John fiddling around with Kai's equipment. After about ten minutes, John had finally gotten the computer to come back on, but to no avail, its memory had been wiped clean.

"You could always redraw it by hand, when is it due? John asked.

"Monday." Kai said, sounding quite defeated, getting up and walking away from John to look out the window of the office building. He was given the opportunity of a lifetime to further his career and it was about to be taken away because of a technical malfunction. Kai took a deep breath and exhaled, realizing that he didn't have any other choice, he made his way to Jinn's office.

Kai had made it to Jinn's office and stood outside the door for a moment. He had successfully avoided Jinn for the past week, but now he didn't have a choice. Kai fiddled with his fingers a bit, holding his fist up to knock on the door and then putting it back down again.

"Hey Kai." Said a voice coming up behind him.

Startled a bit, Kai quickly turned around, he could recognize that deep suave voice from across a room.

"Hehe, heyee." Said Kai, chuckling nervously.

"Did you need something?" Jinn asked.

Kai stared at the ground for a moment and directed his attention back to Jinn, who was awaiting an answer. "uhh yeah, actually I do."

"Okay, come in." said Jinn with that same reassuring smile as he walked around Kai, opened the door, holding it open and motioned for Kai to enter first. Kai sighed to himself, walking into Jinn's office and had a seat. Jinn walked around Kai and sat at his desk on the other side of the table.

"So, what can I do for you?" Jinn said staring at Kai.

Kai looked up at Jinn who was giving him his undivided attention and it made him nervous. Kai quickly stared at his lap and began to speak, "I need a favor. You know Tomo Kan's building was assigned to me and it's due on Monday. My computer crashed on me and my final draft was lost. I was wondering if you could get me an extension?"

Jinn's smile suddenly disappeared. "I'm not going to be able to do that, Tomo Kan is already impatient and paid a lot of money for your design specifically."

Kai sighed, hoping Jinn was going to be able to give him something other than bad news. "Well, I'm going to have to withdraw, even if I borrowed someone's equipment, I'm not going to be able to have the final draft completed by Monday. Sorry for wasting your time." Said Kai standing up about to leave Jinn's office. Jinn saw the look on Kai's face, and it made him hurt for Kai, he had seen that look before and he knew where Kai would end up as soon as happy hour started.

"Wait." Said Jinn.

Kai took his hand off the doorknob and turned around, "…."

"If I helped you, could you finish it?" said Jinn.

Kai's eyes widened, he didn't know how to feel, he had abandoned Jinn, been avoiding him all week and Jinn was still willing to help him out. "There's a special place in hell for people like me.", he thought to himself.

"Well if we split the workload and layouts, it can be done." Said Kai still confused as to why Jinn would go through such lengths.

"I guess we better get to it then. Only thing is your gonna have to stay at my apartment this weekend, since work will be closed. I have a room I use as my office, everything we'll need is there." Said Jinn with a smirk awaiting Kai's reaction.

Kai screamed on the inside, "There's always something." he thought, but he didn't let it show on the outside. "Small price to pay, I'll see you in a bit.", he said allowing a pretty smile onto his face, turning around, opening the door, and walking out of Jinn's office. When Kai left Jinn was biting his lip, a slight blush on his face. That smile was rare, but when it appeared, it sent a chill throughout his body. "I find myself wondering what the hell I'm doing a lot these days." Jinn thought to himself, letting out a soft chuckle.

When five o'clock came around everyone had packed up their things and were in the process of clocking out. Kai clocked out and turned around to see Jinn standing there, his strawberry blonde hair had perfectly laid all day.

"I'm gonna stop at home for a moment, grab my rough hand sketches and then I'll come to you. Want to write down your address?" Said Kai handing Jinn a random piece of paper and a pen he had pulled from his desk.

"Let me have your phone." Said Jinn

"Oh, sure." said Kai, as he pulled out his phone and passed it to him.

Jinn began adding his number and left a draft text to himself with his address in it. "Just text or call me when you're at my place." Said Jinn with that same reassuring smile as he handed Kai his phone back.

"Okay, I will." Kai responded. Jinn nodded and turned around to leave. "This should be interesting to say the least." Kai thought.

Kai had made it back home, changing out of his work clothes, stuffing a few pieces of clothes, underwear, pajamas and such in an overnight bag. He then grabbed his final rough draft sketches of Tomo Kan's building and left out of his apartment. He got into his car, rolling the windows down, put his car in drive and put Jinn's address in his GPS.

After about a half hour drive, Kai's GPS sounded, "You have arrived at your destination." Kai pulled over and parked. Kai got out the car and raised both his eyebrows. Jinn certainly lived in a much nicer neighborhood then he did. There were trees planted on the sidewalk, and Christmas light letters up on street poles to decorate the neighborhood even though it wasn't Christmas.

"How exquisite." Kai thought as he pulled out his phone, quickly texting Jinn before he got nervous and thought anymore about it. Within seconds, Kai's phone dinged, he opened the message and it was Jinn saying he would be right there. Kai sighed, although he was nervous to be staying at Jinn's place, he was relieved to have the help, suddenly giving up a nearly completed project would've certainly hurt his reputation for sure.

"Kai." A familiar voice sounded. Kai looked up to see Jinn standing halfway out of the glass apartment door waving at him. Picking up his things from the hood of his car, Kai walked over to Jinn, the two of them going inside the vestibule of the apartment. The vestibule of the apartment was quite the sight, the floors were a tanned marble, the ceilings were high and there was a chandelier in the center of it all. Jinn noticed Kai was a little lost in his thought's and smiled, his mouth was slightly open, and both eyebrows were raised.

"Ready?" Jinn asked bringing Kai back to reality

Kai turned around and smiled nervously, "yeah." He had a bad habit of letting his mind wander off too often. The two got onto the elevators and soon got off on Jinn's floor. Kai followed behind Jinn, his broad muscular shoulders showing through his fitted white t-shirt. Kai stopped staring at Jinn and looked at the floor as he walked, remembering that Jinn had a killer body underneath those clothes. Kai looked up at Jinn's back once more and then back toward the floor, he had never seen Jinn so relaxed, a t-shirt and dark gray sweatpants suited him well, even though it wasn't anything fancy.

Jinn stopped walking, pulling out his key and put it in the door, and Kai felt his body tense. This was actually happening, he was actually spending the weekend with Jinn again, although it would for sure be much different this time.

Jinn opened the door, holding out his arm allowing Kai to go in first, "Welcome to my humble abode." Said Jinn walking in after Kai and closing the door.

Kai's eyes grew wide, a humble abode was certainly not the words Kai would've used to describe Jinn's apartment. It was huge, the ceilings were high, and everything was whitewashed, he almost felt like he wasn't worthy enough to enter into this place.

"Hey Kai, let me show you to your room and then we can get down to business." Said Jinn making his way down the hall and Kai followed.

"This is the bathroom." Said Jinn quickly flicking on the bathroom light as he walked down the hall, "this is the office." Jinn said, opening the door to his office, "and this is the guestroom. I'll let you get settled and I'll meet you in the living room." Said Jinn flicking on the guestroom light and making his way back down the hall. Kai turned around to watch Jinn leave, it almost seemed odd, like Jinn may have been equally uncomfortable, "I guess it would be hard not to be." Kai thought, putting his bag down on the floor and making his way out to the living room.

When he got there, Jinn was nowhere to be found, so Kai awkwardly stood in the center of the floor. He looked around and the pictures on Jinn's wall caught his attention. Kai walked over, figuring he might as well have a look. The pictures on the wall were of Jinn, a beautiful girl, an older person who looked like Jinn, a man and woman who were most likely his parents. Kai could most definitely see that Jinn had got his looks from both his parents; he was an even mixture of the two with his mothers strawberry blonde hair and his Fathers piercing blue eyes. There was another picture of Jinn when he was probably a teen. He was wearing soccer gear with his foot raised up onto a soccer ball and he was smiling from ear to ear with his dimples and full set of braces on. Kai let out a small giggle leaning closer to the picture, even with braces Jinn was still cute.

"Hey, I got pizza, I ordered it a while ago, so this was perfect timing." Said Jinn closing the front door and walking into the kitchen. "I didn't know what you liked so I just got extra cheese."

Kai followed Jinn into the kitchen, "Extra cheese is the only way to eat pizza." Said Kai with a cheesy smile.

Jinn reached into the cabinet, grabbing two plates, two cups, turning around, and placing them on the island. "Great, help yourself.", he said with a smile. The two made eye contact for a while, their smiles greeting each other, and Kai quickly looked down, grabbing a plate. He helped himself to two slices of pizza, placed himself on one of the bar stools around the island and started eating. Jinn opened the soda, pouring some for Kai and himself, then sat down.

Things were pretty quiet for a moment while the two ate and Kai began to feel awkward, he needed to think of something to say, but before he could, Jinn spoke, "shall we get the elephant out of the room?"

Kai closed his eyes, he knew that this was coming, but maybe it was best to deal with it now. Kai opened his eyes and looked up at Jinn, who was already looking at him. "Look, I know I'm an ass for last weekend, but I was a total mess. There was no way I was gonna be able to stick around and have breakfast with you."

Jinn smirked, taking his eyes off Kai "I see, although I was referring to the pictures you were looking at when I came in."

Kai sucked his mouth inward, that was the second time he rambled off without analyzing the situation clearer. "Ohhh..haha.." Kai said laughing nervously.

"Well come on, let me have it." Said Jinn smirking but squinting his piercing blue eyes at Kai.

Kai let out a chuckle, "I mean, I certainly would've called you brace face back in the day, but you were still cute though."

Jinn laughed, "Cute? Really now?", he said, his smile not so innocent like it usually was.

Kai sucked his lips in again, refusing to reveal the smile that was fighting to be seen. "We've got work to do, Tomo Kan isn't gonna finish itself." He said, stuffing his mouth with the last bite of his pizza, getting up and walking over to the sink to wash his plate. Jinn got up and stood on the right side of Kai, "You are a guess, you don't have to do that."

Kai looked up at Jinn who was towering over him, he was standing quite close and he smelled like a mixture a flowered spring breeze and a lightly scented male cologne. Kai bit his bottom lip and turned his attention back to the dish he was washing, "I'm just being a polite house guest is all." Said Kai as he rinsed his dish, sat it in the dish rack and quickly left the kitchen. Jinn smirked as he watched Kai leave the kitchen, his cute pigeon-toed feet moving quickly, nearly tripping over each other as he hurried out, "he sure was cute." Jinn thought.

When Jinn came into his office, Kai had already set up and divided up what needed to be done. He was sitting on his knees with his feet underneath his bottom leaning over redrawing his rough draft. Jinn watched Kai for a minute as he hadn't noticed that Jinn had entered the room. This was a side of Kai that Jinn hadn't seen, completely focused and enthralled into in his work.

"Oh, you're here, I divided everything up, marked all the layouts for you, you can start creating the building on the drawling pad." Said Kai suddenly noticing that Jinn was standing there.

"On it.", Jinn said walking over to the desk and grabbing the materials he needed. "You are quite the worker; I've never seen you so focused." Said Jinn.

Kai looked up at Jinn, his back to him, and then back onto his work, "I gotta make it count, it's the only thing I'm good at." He said with a chuckle. Jinn turned around to see Kai working hard and smiled, he liked this side of Kai and was sure that there was more he wanted to learn about him.

The time was almost two o'clock in the morning and the two guys had been working diligently for hours. Jinn yawned, "Maybe we should call it a night, huh?" he said. When there was no answer, Jinn turned around to see Kai passed out, laying on the table. Jinn smiled, getting up from his desk, walked over toward Kai and squatted down. His long lashes had created a small jagged shadow below his eyes and his dark hair was sloppily falling out of his ponytail, Kai had a habit of messing with his hair when he was tired. "Only you could be this cute when you sleep." Jinn thought, as he exhaled softly.

Kai's eyelids fluttered, then opened slowly and Jinn jumped up, leaning over the table like he was cleaning up Kai's work area.

"Ugh….I don't even remember falling asleep." Kai said as he sat up and stretched.

"Well it's pretty late, you must be tired. Why don't you go turn in, I'll straighten up a bit." said Jinn as he neatly placed the large papers in a pile.

Kai let out a loud yawn and quickly closed his mouth, softening the sound, feeling embarrassed when he noticed a smirk had crept onto Jinn's face. "How rude of me." Kai said staring at the table.

"That's alright, I'm sure I let out plenty of them while you were passed out." Said Jinn looking up at Kai. Kai looked up at Jinn and smiled, his handsome yet baby face unintentionally flirting with Jinn, causing him to suddenly direct his attention back to what he was doing.

"Well I'm gonna go, sleep well." Said Kai standing up, stretching once more, and leaving out of the room. As Kai left the room, Jinn let out a heavy exhale. It would become hard to be around Kai if he kept smiling like that, the more of his personality Jinn saw, the more he liked.

Kai opened his eyes to the sun that was dancing on his face and he squinted. He was indeed tired last night and had fell back to sleep as soon as his head hit the pillow. Kai sat up, grabbing his phone, the time being after twelve. He stretched his mouth to one side, unsure why he was sleeping so hard lately. Suddenly the aroma of bacon tickled his nose, he sniffed deeply, and his stomach growled, "Guess I better go investigate." He said with a smirk as he opened the door and made his way toward the kitchen.

When Kai arrived in the kitchen, there was a spread of strawberries, eggs, toast, bacon, and a pitcher of coffee laid out on the island in the kitchen. Jinn who was already dressed was reaching into the cabinet grabbing plates and cups when he noticed Kai.

"Good morning, sleep well?" Jinn said smiling as he continued placing things on the island, Kai's wakeup face and messy bed head made him look like a little kid.

"I did, and you?" Kai responded.

"Like a king. May I have the pleasure of you joining me for brunch, this time?" Jinn said pulling out a bar stool for Kai.

Kai and Jinn made eye contact for a second before Kai looked away, his face somewhat pouting. With the emphasis on "this time", Kai almost wanted to take off and hide in the guestroom, but he instead walked over and sat on the bar stool that Jinn had pulled out for him. Jinn smiled, sitting down beside him. Jinn grabbed a plate, passing it to Kai, grabbed his own plate and began to fill it up. Kai waited for Jinn to finish before he began to fill his plate with only bacon, eggs and toast.

Kai was lost in his thoughts, still thinking of what Jinn had said when Jinn spoke, "Don't like strawberries?"

Kai looked up at Jinn as he was taking a bite of toast. He stopped, removing the toast from his mouth, "It's not that I don't like them, I'm severely allergic."

Jinn jumped up and removed the strawberries from the table, placing them in the fridge and Kai smiled, "They're only a problem if I eat them, otherwise harmless." Kai said with a giggle at Jinn's sudden reaction.

"Right." Jinn said sort of awkwardly. "Well I'm sorry. I wish I had've known that, I would have brought something else this morning."

"It's fine, I appreciate the food." Kai said letting a little smile quickly cross his face as he stuffed a mouthful of eggs.

Jinn smiled and it suddenly disappeared. "I do suppose we should talk about last weekend; don't you think?"

Kai stopped chewing and looked up at Jinn, who had made it perfectly clear he wanted to have the conversation this time. Kai looked down at his plate and sighed softly, "I suppose we should."
