Chapter 2: Satchel
"Would I be happy, just because finally we're graduating? Or I rather be honest with myself that I am still not ready to leave those who once became part of my life?
We're in white, wearing our togas, holding our diplomas, and i saw them; I saw the people who became part of my high school life.
Those were just two years, but it was all worth it. All of the happiness, sadness, grumpiness, nemeses, and embarassment that we all experienced were truly unforgettable.
My friends who gave me extraordinary experiences of friendship, and even the other groups of friends formed in our small and simple classroom were also difficult to forget.
Thank you for the 388 days of crying, laughing, being crazy, being moody, getting stressed out with you guys, while reaching each of our dreams in life.
Today, that we're about to be in college, we shall always remember that once inside a classroom, friendship was formed filled with memories that should never be forgotten, but be always treasured. Thank you Grade 12 family, I will miss you all and let our journey prosper and continue!"
A huge round of applause filled my ears.
I am not on a stage, and I also don't have a lot of audience.
I am just here, inside my room, and the applause came from my good friends, Heaven, Alcee, and Genesis.
"Thank you... Thank you..." I said, while giving my full bow.
"Nice speech, Alchemy!" Alcee praised me.
"I agree, it's beautiful; very heart-warming!" Genesis added.
"Of course, What do you expect?" I said.
"Yours is already fantastic, how about Satchel's? His will surely be a masterpiece!"
All of us laughed.
Satchel Larson, will be the most intelligent and most diligent person that I ever met in my entire life. He is just the Summa cummlaude of our batch. He's also the President of the Campus Journalism Club of the high school department, a member of the Campus Dance Troupe, and also our Class President. That are maybe the reason why every student and every teacher in our school are amazed of how he could maintain his high grades while handling all of these different extra-curricular activities.
It is maybe just a bonus that he is also given such kindness and cuteness, making all the girls, and gays love him— including me.
Heaven grabs my paper, "Nice!" she said, "But wait, something's missing..." she smirks, "Why is it not including the, 'I love you, Satchel. I will miss you', line huh?"
"SILLY!" I grab my paper back, "What, 'I LOVE YOU, SATCHEL. I MISS YOU', line are you talking about? Are you out of your mind?"
She laughs.
"Alchemy, Alchemy, Alchemy..." Heaven chanted, "'You don't have to deny it, it was pretty obvious that you like Satchel!" she smirked.
"WHAT?!" I shouted, "N-NO WAY! I WOULD NEVER GOING TO LIKE THAT SUPER EXTRA GUY!" I denied.
"For chrisake, Chem. Are you really going to deny it?" she said, "You can even ask Alcee and Genesis, they obviously knew it too!"
I look at Alcee and Genesis, and they nodded together.
"Okay! Fine." I gave up, "I like him, okay?!"
"See?!" Heaven smiles, "Why didn't you tell us about it or why didn't you just confess your feelings for him?"
"It's because that is off limits." I explained, "Perhaps, I will just be embarassed. He didn't even care about me or worse, he will not even like me!"
"Okay, THAT'S IT!" Heaven puts both of her hands on my shoulders, "Tomorrow, promise us that you will confess your feelings to him."
"W-WHAT?! ARE YOU KIDDING?!" I pushed her, "YOU'RE GETTING INSANE!"
"Alchemy, this is also for you." Alcee added, "We're just helping you out."
"I DON'T WANT TO! I WILL JUST MAKE A FOOL OUT OF MYSELF!"
Heaven laughed at me, "Nope. Based on what you're doing right now, you're being more of like... a coward."
"Ah, SHUT UP. I JUST DON'T WANT TO!"
"Why not?" Alcee added, "It's even the end of our classes. We're already going to college. It is not like, we will still see each other everyday. You will barely meet again, and this is your last chance!"
"I DON'T WANT TO!"
"Guys," Genesis interrupted, "Don't pressure Alchemy. Just let her do what she wants. Here, just remember Alchemy that whatever may happen we will always be right here for you, okay? We're always supporting you, no matter what."
I smiled at them, "Thank you, guys."
"Sure, sure." Heaven agreed, "But, we already tried helping you out, alright? Don't get bitter or bothered if you will suddenly see him making out with another girl."
"I won't! And why would I even get bothered if he's making out with someone? I'm not in the position to over react because in the first place, I don't have any relationship with him. Besides, even if I confess my feelings, I'm super sure that he will never pay attention to me." I said, but I lied.
Of course, I will be bothered. I will be bothered if I see him making out with a random girl... or random guy. Because, I care. Even if I'm not that close to Satchel, I still do care for him, I care about his life and how he is.
If the time comes where Satchel already has found his special someone, then good for him. I can't do anything about that. Just, who am I to complain about him having a girlfriend, or boyfriend? I still need to be aware of my limits.
We all look at the door, when the campus bell rang.
"All senior high school students, please proceed to the Gymnasium. All senior high school students, please proceed to the Gymnasium. Thank you. "
"This is it, guys." Heaven said, "This is our final graduation practice. Later, at night, is our Farewell Party. So, let us just clear out our minds, and have fun, okay? Just embrace the good vibes!" she said.
"SURE!!!" We hug each other, and together we go in the Gymnasium for our last graduation practice.
And, oh my, there are a lot of students. We are like in a busy Christmas shopping spree. We can't barey even move.
"Please fall in line, according to your strands and section."
Slowly, we followed what the voice in the speaker told us what to do. We fall in line, according to our strands and section.
"ALCHEMY!" I turned around to see where the voice came from, and it was just from Finn, an aquaintance from the STEM strand, "YOU'RE GOING TO PARTY LATER, RIGHT?"
"Yeah," I answered, "Heaven will be pissed off if I didn't come."
We're already lined up, but still the final practice for our graduation is not starting. They announced that the Farewell Party is going to start at eight in the evening. Then, finally, we proceeded in our last graduation practice.
While practicing, I can't help but stare at Satchel.
"Alchemy Llynch, please step forward..."
Just look at him, go. He's so gorgeous...
"ALCHEMY LLYNCH!"
I was startled and I finally realized that it is my turn to walk on the isle for our graduation ceremony practice. I proceeded to walk slowly, and again, I stared at him and I saw him staring back at me. That caught me off guard, I didn't know what to do. I blankly looked away, and pretended that my eyes just normally passed by him.
After the practice, I went straightly in the females comfort room, beside the males comfort room. I fixed my hair and wiped my stinky sweat off.
Suddenly, I felt a familiar aura standing outside the door of the females comfort room. I looked, and I knew it. It was him, Satchel. He just came out of their comfort room and now, he was just standing outside, looking straightly at me.
I can't, I JUST CAN'T! I can't even look myself straight in the mirror because I was too shy, knowing that he is looking at me!
"It seemed like you're bothered?"
I freeze. I was frozen to my spot. What will I do?!
"H-huh? Oh, that one? Oh, that was just... um..."
"No need to explain, I just noticed how bothered you were in the practice. I didn't ask why." He said. "Thank you for the two years of being our class Vice President and also for being my classmate."
Why did I felt happy of what he said? The kind of happiness that is pure and heart-warming.
"Too bad, we didn't even talk that much." He smiled and looked straightly in my eyes. "Well, maybe two years are just not enough." then he left.
I was almost out of breath of what he just said. Out of nowhere, he just suddenly blurted that out! What does that even mean? Is this finally a sign that I should really confess my feelings for him?
Night came, and everyone is preparing. My friends and I wear our stylish clothes and do our hair and make ups. We will definitely have a heck of a party!
We are about to go to the Farewell Party, when Heaven's phone rings.
"Go ahead you guys, I'll catch up." she said, while answering her call.
We agreed, and proceeded to the venue of the Party. Gosh! The place is very wonderful! It is very vibrant, young, and lively! Perfect for a fantastic Farewell Party!
Finally, Heaven's here.
"Who's that?" Alcee asked.
"My mom, being a mom." she laughed. "You guys, don't mind that! We're here to have fun, remember?"
We do had fun! We dance, drink, laugh, flirt amd have fun with others, but as I observe Heaven is lowkey being quiet right now, what's the matter with her?
"Heav, you okay?" I asked her.
"Huh? Of course! " she let out a soft laugh, "Why did you ask?"
I shook my head, "You're just too quiet, you're being so not you."
"Shut up, are you telling that I'm always too loud?" she pouted.
"Just kidding!" I laughed, "Come, let's go there, with our classmates." I invited her.
"Sure! Just give me a sec, I'm going to pee."
"Okay, lemme come with you. My bladder couldn't make it, either!" we laughed, and I went with her inside the Female Comfort room.
Inside the comfort room, we entered the cubicles who were literally beside each other. I was done doing my business, and was ouside of Heaven's cubicle, waiting for her, when I suddenly thought of sharing my experience with Satchel earlier.
I broke the silence, and started to speak up, "Heav, can I share something?"
"Yeah?"
"Earlier, after our final graduation practice, I went in here, right? I even told you guys to just wait for me in our dorm, right?"
"Yeah? What about it?"
"Well, I bumped into Satchel."
"SHUT UP!" she said, while flushing down her toilet and getting out of her cubicle smiling widely, "DON'T TELL ME, YOU CONFESSED YOUR FEELINGS IN HERE?!"
I laughed, "No! I just saw outside of the comfort room, and he told me that it seemed like I was bothered during our final practice. And that, he's also thankful for me being his classmate and Vice President for two years."
She nodded in relief, "Good news. I thought you really confessed your feelings... IN HERE."
I laughed softly and washes my hands, "You think, I should really confess my feelings for him?"
She wash her hands too, and dries them off, "I told you girl, you better tell everything before it's too late. We didn't even know if Satchel is still single. What his response is not the thing here." She faced me, "Getting in college is a new beginning for us, right? We needed to finish all of our on-going missions in our high school life, whether it's about thesis, friendship, love or revenge. Entering college is like entering a new chapter of our life. We need to deal all of our unfinish business in order to keep our hearts and self at peace. Perhaps, I'm sure you will not regret doing it."
I smiled and nodded. We went out of the comfort room, and went our way back to our classmates.
"You, guys, where have you been?!" Alcee asked us, "The Party is not complete without you, guys!"
"We just went for a comfort room break." I told her.
"Sheesh, enough of that. I want some food!" Genesis wrapped her arm around mine, "Alcee, Heaven." she said, "Chem and I are going to have some feast on the Buffet area! We're going back, later, okay?"
"You're such a pig!" Heaven laughed, "Go ahead, and eat all you can."
"While you still can!" Alcee added.
We all laughed. And while leaving, Heaven and I made an eye contact. We smiled at each other, sincerely, as if we knew what will happen next between Satchel and I.
Maybe, Heaven's right. Maybe, my friends are right. I needed to do this and not regret anything.
We arrived at the Buffet area. There are a lot of food on the long table in different kinds, nachos, cavier and chips, grilled corn in the husk, barbecued ribs, buffalo chicken wings, lasagna, cheese and ham sandwiches, veggie sandwiches, Tuna sandwiches, water, soda, champagne, ice cream, banana split, and apple pie.
"Look at all of these food!" Genesis said, "Imma get my plate!"
I laughed at her sudden enthusiasm. I also get my plate and was busy picking out some food to eat, when the lights suddenly went out.
You can hear all of the students panicking. I was frozen on to my feet. I didn't even move an inch.
Finally, the lights went on.
I was relieved to see my plate being untouched, but I was startled to see something I didn't meant to see.
I gently placed down my plate of food on one of the tables, and my heart dropped, when I saw Satchel kissing another girl. And this girl is not just a random girl, I knew who she is.
My heart was broken when it hit me that the girl is my best friend, Heaven. Satchel is kissing Heaven.
The crowd is cheering on them, happily, and gladly.
Heaven lets go of the kiss, "What did you just do?" I heard her asking him, "Are you insane?!"
"'Don't worry." Satchel answered, "Class is ending soon, we no longer have to keep our relationship in a secret. Now, for just this once, trust me."
Heaven pushes him away, and she starts searching for someone in the crowd. Finally, our eyes meet each other. "A-alchemy..."
I felt like a simp melting inch by inch, while looking at her, the girl who Satchel loves.
"H-heaven..." I mouthed, "Of all people... Why does it needed to be you?" my voice cracked, refraining myself from crying.
Satchel also looks at me, confused. Heaven finally lets go of Satchel's arms and she starts to approach me, "Alchemy, please... L-let me explain, please..."
"GOSH, IM SO STUFFED! Are you done eating Alchemy, let's go back to Alcee and Heaven, and have a blast!" Genesis interrupted the awkward atmosphere between us.
She went silent when she saw Heaven shaking in front of me.
"W-what is happening?" she asked, "HEAVEN!" she looked at her, "WHAT HAPPENED BETWEEN YOU AND ALCHEMY?!"
Heaven couldn't help but cry, "I-I didn't mean to... S-sorry..."
I don't know what to feel. I can't even look nor speak. I gently held Genesis's arms, "Let's go Genesis, we're done here."
Shocked, Genesis and I walk away to the scene and goes back to Alcee, leaving Heaven alone.
"Alcee..." Gen whispered at her ear.
"Huh? Why? What happened?" she asked, "Did something happened? Wait, where's Heaven? Heaven followed you guys, Satchel took her there."
"I'm not sure, but I think Alchemy saw Satchel kissing and confessing his love for Heaven. And I think they are already dating"
"WHAT?!" Alcee approached me, "Alchemy, are you alright?"
I shrugged.
"Are we already going home, for tonight?"
Again, I shrugged, "I-I just want to be alone."
Genesis and Alcee did what I said. They left me alone and gave me some personal time.
Bullshit. This is indeed one of my most memorable Farewell Party, ever. Yes, I do want this to be memorable, but not in this way.
Alright, I knew what I have said earlier, that it's completely okay even if Satchel finds a girlfriend, but I didn't thought that it will be Heaven.
Why does it need to be her? In a lot of students in this school, why does it need to be her? I mean, I'm not Cupid to control their feelings for each other, but it seemed so unfair! Why does it need to be my bestfriend?!
"Drinks?" I turned my head, and saw this mysterious guy holding a bottle of champagne and a wine glass.
I shook my head, "I'm fine, and also I don't drink, so no, thanks."
"That's not what I see." he responded, "You look like shit right now and this, is the answer to your problems." he said, while holding up the bottle of champagne and the wine glass.
I roll eyes, and answered, "Sure, sure... But please, I don't want anybody right now. I just want to be alone."
He shut off his mouth, but he didn't leave.
"Aren't you going to leave me alone?" I answered in a very rude voice, "Please, I want to be alone."
He poured me some champagne, "My bad, 'cause I can't leave you right now, because I knew that you need some company. Yes, I am not leaving, but I will keep my mouth shut. I will never bother you or talk with you. I will be super quiet that you will not even notice my presence here."
I just stared at him, and ignored all of what he just said. I don't want to stressed out myself.
Later, I didn't notice that I was already drinking half of the champagne bottle.
"HEY!" I shouted, "Who told you to get me drunk, huh?"
"I'm not doing anything." he said, "I was just refilling your glass."
I glared on him, "MORON! Don't refill it!"
He laughs, "Oh, really? Sorry, but this is what I do."
"You know what, you're really being too obvious..." I pulled him closer, "Are you hitting on me?"
He bursted in laugh, "You know what, I think you're really drunk. Where's your friends? You need to go home."
I felt so dizzy, but I still managed to get up, "NO! I DON'T WANT TO!" I told him, frowning, "We will still going to PARTY!!!"
He helped stood still, "You really need to go home. Do you have their numbers? Here, lemme borrow your phone."
I leaned on his chest, "Wanna dance?"
I pull him on the center of the dance floor. There are a lot of people, but I manage to walk pass them and dance to my hearts content!
I looked at him, and it seemed like he find me weird for dancing while drunk.
"Come on, twerk that ass for meh!" I hold her hands, and wiggled his arms as if I'm helping him to dance, "That's it!"
He laughed amd tried following what I'm doing. I also laughed at him for being such a naive, following everything that I said.
After a long time of jiving and dancing, I suddenly felt that I'm getting nauseous and getting dizzier causing me to trip and almost fell down. Good thing, there's this strange guy with me because he actually caught me from falling.
"I'm tired." I smile at him, "I forced myself too much, right? That's it, he doesn't like me. He likes someonelse. Why am I sad though?" my voice starting to crack again, and gently tears are falling down to my cheeks.
"You should get some rest, this is just too much for you to handle." he said.
Slowly, I felt my body and eyes getting weary making fall in a deep sleep.
