Chapter 2: 2

Emily

No, it can't be.

Cats don't talk. Or do they? Do cats talk?

I look around, to see if any of the other girls had woken up. Nope, nobody's awake. Good. So I look at the cat and sit up straight.

I'm going to sound so dumb talking to a cat.

"Did you just talk?" I ask the cat. I hear sort of a mumbling sound escaping the cat's lips, but I can make out the words, "yes."

I jump in my bed and clap a hand to my mouth so nobody could hear my loud gasp. When I recover from the shock, I slowly move my hand away from my mouth. "You just talked..."I say slowly, my brain in shock.

"Yes." the black cat repeated.

My mouth drops, and for a few seconds, I stay like that for a while, until the black cat breaks the silence. "Emily, tell me-"

"How do you know my name?" I interrupt.

Whoops, I said that a bit loud, did any of the girls wake up?

I glance around and see that Samantha, from sleeping on the other side of the room, woke up. She turned the lamp which is next to her bed on. I return my gaze back at the place where the black cat sat. but it had already gone.

"Emily! Why did you wake me up?"Samantha cried, clearly upset.

I desperately try and find an excuse. "Uhm, nightmare," I mutter. "Go back to sleep, I need a glass of water." I see that the cup on my bedside table is empty, so I pick it up and slip my fuzzy, comfortable slippers on and silently walk to the kitchen only stopping once to see the janitor, Bill. " Hi, just need some water."

"Okay, dahl," Bill says in a very strong Scottish accent and lets me past. I walk down the stairway and through to the end of the corridor, where the handsome dark wooden door sat that led to the kitchen and try the handle of the door. I sigh.

Locked.

"Bill?" I call, running back to the spot where Bill was mopping the dirty floor. "Bill? Do you have a key to the kitchen?"

"Yes dahl, I got em right 'ere!" He holds up the keys jangling them, and my spirits lift.

"Bill, could you open the door of the kitchen for me? I need some water, and it's locked." I say innocently. My eyes are still dreary from no sleep but I try and sound cheerful.

"Sure! Dahl!" Bill says.

"Thank you, Bill," I say, smiling. He walks with me down to the kitchen door and turns the key.

Click!

He shuffles away. I hold my glass tightly and walk over to the sink, my slippers squeak on the wet floor bill recently mopped. I turn around sipping a bit of water. I see the black cat sitting on the benchtop, I jump and I slip on the slippery floor and gasp as I fall, inhaling water. I splutter, and cough, trying to get the water out, while I lie there, the door slams as a huge gust of wind sweeps through the open window.

'Help me!' I Mouth to the cat, before falling unconscious.
