Chapter 8: Cornwall Secondary School
Nadia Zia dropped the pile of papers on the table. She was tired having checked so many papers during the afternoon.
"Hi what's up," came a voice. Nadia looked up. It was Diane Dalson. She was eating a hot dog. Diane, who had graduated in Computer Science from York University, had been unable to find a computer job, so she shifted to teaching and, now taught science at Cornwall Secondary School.
"Hello Diane. I didn't see you....all these papers," said Nadia, sighing.
"Haven't you finished your checking?" Diane asked.
"No five left, Patch James is so strict about punctuality; I thought that I had better arrive early and do the remaining checking, hmm....I see the principal hasn't arrived yet."
"No one has," informed Diane.
"I have eyes. I can see," returned Nadia.
"You didn't see me when you arrived," replied Diane smartly.
"You are getting on my nerves," groaned Nadia.
She started checking the remaining five admission test papers. "Students who apply for admissions want to work less and believe in miracles more. Terrible."
"That's true. Teenagers don't read nowadays so their written English is not very good. If you read, then you get more ideas for essays."
"Totally correct. Let's see Neilson's work."
"He'll probably fail," predicted Diane with the air of a prophet.
"Good prediction. Full marks to you."
"Really?" said Diane happily.
"Yeah, because he didn't attempt the composition at all," said Nadia.
Diane burst out laughing.
"Some girl called something-Keller."
"Hmm," murmured Diane. "Essay won't be good."
"You are true prophetess," commented Nadia. "She's gone totally off the topic in her essay."
"All credit to me," declared Diane.
"Why?"
"Well, after all, I predicted that her essay wouldn't be good."
"And the last one is Sameer Mohammad," announced Nadia gratefully. "What do you make of him?"
Diane did not speak initially. Then her voice came cold ad hard, "A bad lot."
