Chapter 14: Rina

Ava and Noah worriedly looked at the door. Suddenly the door dramatically burst open. Noah and Ava surprisingly looked at each other. Rina evilly smiled at them as she wore her deep magenta cape robe which reached the floor while holding a black cat in her arms.

"Is... Is everything alright?" Ava awkwardly asked.

Rina let out a loud cackle which startled Ava. Noah rubbed Ava's back trying to calm her down from the shock.

"Come, come. Follow me," Rina said slowly stroking her cat.

As Ava took a step forward, the cat loudly hissed at her making Ava take a step back. Noah walked in front of her and held her hand, leading her through the door. As they walked through the door, they couldn't see anything, it was pitch black. They stopped behind Rina waiting for their next command.

"Be careful when you walk down the stairs," Rina smugly said.

Ava carefully observed her, seeing a sly smirk on her face as she walked down the stairs with her cat. Noah led Ava down the stairs cautious of their surroundings. As they were walking down the stairs, Noah bumped into the crazy lady.

"You two wait here."

Ava looked behind her to see the door at the top of the stairs shutting on its own. Ava knew this was a bad idea, but she needed to find out what was going on with her. She tightly held onto Noah's hand hoping he would get the hint that she was scared. Noah realized this and went up to her ear.

"Everything is going to be okay. We'll be leaving soon," he whispered.

Ava nodded and stood next to him as they waited for Rina to come. Rina came with the cat on her shoulder this time. She signalled them to follow her. They walked down a dark corridor with weird paintings and symbols drawn and written across the wall. Soon they reached a door, but this door was different to the rest.

This door was solid metal which brought confusion to Ava since all the doors in the shop were made of wood. Nothing was going to budge this door. The surface was flat and shiny like the outside of a stainless-steel refrigerator. There was a sign in the centre of the door and in bold capitals, it read, 'DO NOT ENTER.' There was no handle, no lock, no hinges, nothing to get a grip on. The top and bottom, even the sides, lay so utterly flush with the frame that there was no hope of jamming it open. The only thing on the door was a keypad to unlock the door, but something was weird about this keypad. Ava squinted her eyes to get a better look at it, and was she noticed was something she had never seen before. The keypad wasn't numbers, but symbols.

Rina looked back to look at Ava who quickly turned her head to look at the walls. Rina covered the keypad with her robe and put in the code. There was a sudden buzz. The door was unlocked. Ava astonishingly looked at the cat lady, wanting to know how she knew what they meant. They all walked through the door and closed their eyes at once from the blinding lights that shone on their faces. They slowly opened their eyes adjusting to the light around them.

Ava looked around to see that they were in a laboratory. The laboratory was as quiet and cold as a morgue. A thin film of dust lay on anything. Ava guessed that it's been a while since anyone has been in here or even working here. In the centre was a bed with straps for hands and legs. Ava saw that the straps were made from leather and started to get concerned as to what was going to happen to her. Noah and Ava walked towards the bed and looked around. They saw a glass panel set in the wall and they looked through into a dark room. The room was slightly lit up by weird substances that stood on the table, all unusual colours. Ava noticed a large look at the corner of the table. She tried making out the title of the book, but she was interrupted by a loud cough and an aggressive hiss.

"Sorry, I never asked you your name."

"I'm Ava."

"I'm Noah."

"What a nice name... Noah."

Noah ignored her statement and looked at Ava who smiled at him.

"So... Ava," She said in disgust.

Ava rolled her eyes.

"I would need you to lay down so I can do some tests."

Ava nodded and walked towards the bed laying down on it. The black cat jumped off Rina's grasp and walked towards Noah trying to attack him. Rina walked up to her and as she was about to put the strap on her hand Ava quickly removed it.

"What do you think you're doing?" Ava questioned.

"Putting the strap on," Rina answered as she tightly grabbed Ava's hand and forced it down.

Ava struggled to pull her arm from her grasp. They looked at each other. Ava stared into her eyes. It felt like something was controlling her. Inside her eyes, she could see many creatures. Rina's eyes grew wider allowing all the supernatural creatures that seemed to appear in her eyes take over Ava's mind. Suddenly Ava had a vision of the evil creature that was outside her door. She remained motionless her eyes focusing on the wall. Rina took the advantage and laid Ava down strapping her legs and feet. Her cat jumped to her arms as they both walked into the other room.

Noah walked towards Ava and stood beside her.

"Hey, are you okay?"

Noah received no answer.

"Ava?"

"Answer me."

"Are you okay?"

Noah waved his hand over Ava's eyes, but her eyes remained open looking at the ceiling. She had no movement. Noah observed her for a few seconds to notice she wasn't blinking or moving at all. Noah desperately shook her unresponsive body. He shook her harder and harder hoping she would answer him.

"Ava? What's going on?"

He checked for a pulse and it was rapidly beating. Noah looked around and saw a couple of crates. He ran towards them and looked behind them. He took a few steps back. There was a handbag and a passport on the floor, which didn't belong to Rina. Just when things couldn't get worse, he looked over the window and saw her reciting something from the book while her hand was circling a bowl.

Noah stared at her for a while. Rina sharply looked up and open her pure black eyes. Noah quickly rushed to Ava and started fumbling with the straps, trying to undo them. The door slammed open and there stood a floating human with black eyes with a creepy smug smile on its face. Noah rapidly grabbed one of the machines behind him and threw it at the newly changed Rina who got knocked by the contraction.

He quickly grabbed onto Ava and carried her out of the lab, through the corridor and up the stairs. As he reached the top of the stairs, he tried to open it, but it wouldn't budge. He sat Ava down and tried open the door with the handle.

"You can't run away from me," a rasping tone of an old fifty-a-day smoker spoke.

Noah heard this and moved away from the door. He went against the door and shoulder budged I trying to break the door open. He kept going and on the fourth try, the door flung open. As he was about to grab Ava, Rina took hold of Ava's ankle and began pulling on it trying to bring her down the stairs. Noah grabbed her arms trying to pull her back to him. He ran to Ava's ankles and stepped on the bony hands. There was a loud screech. Noah quickly carried Ava out of the door and ran out of the shop and through the alleyways. He put Ava on the floor and sat down next to her breathing heavily.
