Chapter 3: 3

Xing Fei came out of the car and pointed her index finger at Da Wei, her eyes burning with rage. "Don't you dare call me your wife. I am already pissed at my mother now don't provoke me."

"Or what?" He smirked leaning over her.

Da Wei is very tall and muscular than Xing Fei's lean, short frame. She was no match to his strength but has a temper which would put volcano to shame. She lifted her hand to slap him hard on his cheeks and break his teeth but Da Wei held her hand in his firm gap preventing her from moving further.

"Baby, It's okay if you want time to love me back, but never say that you will not be my wife. You are mine." Completing his sentence he planted a kiss on her forehead, sniffed her hair and let her go.

Feeling enraged, she pulled out of the parking space, veered east and drove beyond the speed limit while her house continued to fade into the distance. Copious amount of adrenaline coursed through her veins as she veered ahead, bolstered by the desire to get as far away as possible from her house.

She knew just the right place to cool off. It was somewhere she had visited more than once whenever her mother gave her a difficult time. Xing Fei drove through the rough roads without an ounce of care as her heart was hell bent on being at the Houhai Lake.

Her drive through the dirt roads, pitch dark and howling silence finally came to a halt as she sought to breathe. Hearing her heartbeat and threatening to tear through her chest caused her more hurt than the words her mother had hurled at her some minutes before. Xing Fei was used to the sultry words and constant putdown but tonight felt worse.

Her past mistakes and failings had been rubbed in her face.

Medical school had not turned out the way she wanted, and law school, which ought to fix things and avert the castigation of not finishing business school, had ended up terribly too.

"Why can't I get anything done right!" she raged and rammed her fist into her steering as her eyes turned red.

Xing Fei wondered when it would all come to an end; if it would come to an end at all. The berating had never ceased and her mother's sharp tongue would sting like a bee at every opportunity the woman was presented with. While her father would do his best to calm things down, he had not been around to make peace on ther particular night. Da Wei on the other hand is hell bent on marrying her since he is a family friend and everyone is okay with marrying loser Fei with achiever Wei.

Subtly sniffing, while her murky vision permitted little light to pass through, she spotted the bridge just ahead, some short distance from where she had parked her car. The night felt peaceful where she was; the wind howled beautifully while the trees danced in accordance. There were no tough words from her mother, no madness from Wei, and above all, she didn't feel the need to engage anyone but herself.

Through the darkness, Xing Fei spotted a figure drawing closer. Worried, she turned off her engine and watched the image suddenly draw to a halt just by the railing, looked around with his face perfectly sheltered in a hoodie, before leaning towards the protective railing overseeing the lake.

"Shit!" Xing Fei muttered to herself.

The scenario seemed to only mean one thing in that moment as she watched the hooded figure continue to bend over the railing.

"He is about to jump", Xing Fei thought to herself.

Reports of depressed people jumping off bridges and drowning were on the high but she never assumed she was going to come across one. Hurrying out of her car, she let her door back into place in hopes of not startling the hooded figure.

"Carefully", she warned herself as she drew closer, well hidden by the darkness.

Whatever stealth she had managed to obtain and keep up was bound to get torn to shreds the moment she walked atop the bridge. The bridge, well-equipped with lights would give him away in an instant and Xing Fei was hoping it wouldn't startle the jumper into doing anything rash. More so, the worry of whether or not the individual could be armed crossed her young, but daring mind.

By the frame, Xing Fei could guess the figure wasn't an adult. They shared a similar build, but getting a good glimpse of the individual's face seemed to be more difficult than she anticipated.

"Oh shit! He is about to do it", Xing Fei noted as she intensified her pace towards the bridge.

Feeling a sting of guilt that she might not probably be able to get to the jumper in time, Xing Fei took to her heels, while she waved her hands dearly. The distance she had to cover did him not much good, but she hoped to get noticed enough to distract the person, even if it would be for a moment. She could not stand the eventualities, should the figure drown and commit suicide under her watch.

The figure slowly bent backwards and placed his upper body back atop the rail, almost as though he intended to flip over before his next action stopped Xing Fei on her tracks. Slowly, he pulled out a shiny object which he glared into on the safety of his hands, raised it to his lips as he seemed to plant a kiss into it, before clamping his eyes shut and casting it into the river.

Xing Fei watched the figure turn around, with his face coming into proper view through the process. The figure was definitely a young fellow, somewhat within the same age bracket as Xing Fei and whose face bore some measure of dour as he turned away and disappeared out of sight.

Somewhat intrigued and puzzled by whatever the young man was doing by the river, Xing Fei raced over, just in time to see the shining coin slowly make its way towards the bottom of the lake.

"He came to make a wish", Xing Fei realized to herself as a faint smile slowly trickled into her lips.

Atop the railings were beads of tears, obviously from the young man who had just come to make a wish. His innocence coupled with the sadness on his face in that moment he revealed himself to Xing Fei, struck the latter's heart. His action drew some admiration from Xing Fei, who plunged her hand into her right pocket, drew out a coin and held it tightly for a moment.

Clamping her eyes shut with the image of the teary young man she had just seen floating across the field of her mind, Xing Fei made a wish for the stranger's wish to come through, before letting go of the coin. The cast coin slowly simmered out of sight and towards the bottom of the river within seconds.

"I sincerely hope your wishes come true", she wherpered as she thought of the young man once again, and of the innocence his face exuded.

With a warm smile lighting Xing Fei's face, she slowly turned around and began to walk back to her car. There was something about seeing the wishful boy over at the bridge that made her smile all the way back to her car before deciding to drive back home.

Xing Fei's night felt lighter and the hurt coursing through her body slowly dissipated as she drove carefree through the night once again.
