Chapter 11: Chapter 10

"How was shopping?". Hamlin asked as he helped Rufus unload the grocery bags from the car. Lucky had quickly scrambled for his room to get to the privacy and his alone moment he loved. It was as if the outside world had been itching him all the time but Rufus didn't mind at all.

"Good". Rufus said. It wasn't exactly a lie but it was good because he had spent time with Lucky. Hamlin sent him a knowing look. "What Dad?". Rufus asked half amused with the way his father was eyeing him up.

"Your scent". Hamlin replied as his nose flared. He had a small smirk on his face.

"I had masked it the whole time like the way Mom taught and told me to. He didn't smell it". Rufus replied in a small sad voice.

Hamlin took a deep breathe as he kept a hand on his son's shoulders, "I know how you feel but he's the Alpha's son. I know you want him to know how you feel and it's certainly too late to tell you to drop it off but son, I'm worried about you and your future.."

"Trust me Dad you have nothing to worry about. I will be fine". Rufus responded with a sad smile trying to shrug it off but honestly, it was weighing heavily on his shoulders... making him feel heavy, not only physically but also mentally.. he wasn't fine but he was striving hard to be fine.

"I can't stop worrying. You two are sixteen now, his first mate for this lifetime will definitely show up soon, what if it's not you son? Huh? You'll get hurt and I don't want to see you like that". Hamlin confessed, his voice cracking a little.

"Trust me Dad. I'll be fine. Lucky is antisocial before he gets around his mate if it's not me, then maybe I will have won his heart by that time". Rufus answered though aware that the chances of such a thing to happen was very little... either way, he'd still try.

"I have basketball tryouts later in the estate field Pops". Rufus said changing the topic once they entered the house. He didn't want to continue talking about his sucking "love life" anymore.. it hurt!.

"Try to drag Lucky out with you". Aisha suggested as she took some bags from her son's arms that were full.

"I will try". He answered as he set the remaining bags on the kitchen island. "But I don't promise anything". He added with a sigh, hands on his waist as he watched Araminta messily eat her sandwich.

"Just try. Trying is good!". Hamlin said as he took out a can of coke from one of the bags and opened it.

"We got you Redbull. You should leave our cokes alone!". Rufus exclaimed.

"Well I don't feel like drinking Redbull now". Hamlin protested.

"Daddy is it true that Redbull gives you wings?". Araminta asked. They all turned to look at her a bit shocked but quickly snapped out of it when they heard Lucky laughing upstairs.

"Sweetie-". Hamlin began but Araminta cut him off.

"Lucky will marry me when I grow up right Daddy?". She asked.

Hamlin and Aisha looked at each other then back at her. Worried that their daughter might have also started to extract feelings for the brooding introvert upstairs, Aisha scooted close to her daughter trying hard not to look at her son, Rufus.

Rufus was confused, what he felt in his heart couldn't be explained and he didn't know what to do. Had Lucky found his mate in his small sister Araminta?. But his Phoenix wasn't active how could he have found his intended?. Rufus had always perceived and fantasized that he would be the one to activate Lucky's Phoenix.. he wanted... desired to be marked by him and wanted to be called his.

"Sweetie, where did you get that idea from?". Aisha asked almost in a whisper.

"Oh Lucky told me that I'm smart when I passed the test yesterday". Araminta answered innocently.

"It was just a compliment Sweetie". Aisha pointed out trying to make it sound soft as possible so as to not hurt the little girl's feelings -if any-

"But Lucky doesn't compliment people easily." Araminta protested. "But anyhow I like Sylvan better. His skin is so white and his eyes are honey brown and his black hair is so black and he's tall and beautiful". She said with googly eyes.

"Who's Sylvan?". Rufus asked almost in relief.

"Sylvan is in my class and he smells so nice.. I love being around him". Araminta answered shyly. The tips of her ears turning pink. Again, Aisha and Hamlin looked at each other then back at her.

Their daughter had already found her mate...

"She's so young". Hamlin mind linked Aisha.

"Ssshh". Aisha hushed him as she turned her attention back to Araminta. "Go and play. We shall talk about that later".

Araminta easily slipped off her chair and ran to her room.

"What was that about?". Rufus asked.

"Your Lucky is indeed lucky and your sister is in love.." Aisha answered.

"My Lucky... I'm really lucky". Rufus teased and left the kitchen.

"I wonder who that kid is". Hamlin confessed as he sipped on his Coke.

"Relax. I'm sure he isn't that bad". Aisha responded.

"I can already see a heartbreak approaching in Rufus. I don't need another in my last born. It pains me you know.."

"Who said that Rufus is going to be heartbroken?". Aisha asked in a huff.

"He doesn't have a jade Aisha!. He won't have a mate and now he's pinning over Lucky who doesn't even have a clue of what his best friend feels... I cannot only smell his pain but I feel it too Aisha... our son is hurting!". Hamlin said in almost a yell.

"I know Hamlin. Trust me I know but what are we going to do?.. There is nothing that can be done!". Aisha answered almost in tears, this was always a topic that had made them argue on several occasions and it wasn't entertaining at all. It was always painful having to be reminded of the pain that their son lived in... She wanted to live and try to forget about it but every time things came up that reminded her of her son's pain and luck of the most important thing that FireWings could ever have.

••••••

Rufus was tired of the arguments that his parents had. It wasn't on daily basis but it always hurt him wherever they argued because he was always the topic of their arguments... he was the cause if it... of them all!.

Yes, he had heard them all... all the words... the yells... he had smelt their sadness and his mom was on the verge of tears and he couldn't stand it. He didn't want his mom being sad but he caused her pain anyways... he reminded her of the pain he went through, he caused her shame.. No! he caused his parents shame because he didn't have a jade and a Phoenix without a jade is not really a Phoenix... but still they accepted him the way he was even after realizing the flaw he had, shouldn't he be happy with that?.

No he couldn't be contented because he knew even after them accepting him the way he was, they were reminded of his flaw every time they looked at him. They we're not happy about it and they had to keep it a secret from Plutonic and Lucky though at times he thought Plutonic knew by the way he looked at him. He wished he could tell Lucky but he was afraid... his lifetimes weren't even determined also. He was ashamed of himself also.. he wasn't perfect that's why... maybe that's why Lucky didn't love him back, maybe Lucky could smell the sadness in him and didn't want to be associated with depressed people?. He just couldn't place a finger on that a and he didn't want to anyway. It hurt him and he didn't want to stir the feeling more.

He turned to leave the mansion when he bumped into something hard and firm. The "something" grunted causing Rufus to back away quickly.

"What's the hurry?". Plutonic asked as he looked down at the lad who was reeking of sadness more than normal. He was yet to figure out why.

"Uh sorry Alpha. I was going to go... I mean I am about to leave for my game!". Rufus answered nervously.

Plutonic nodded once. His jaw clenched trying not to be drowned in the intoxicating negative smell of the boy's feelings.

"Look where you're going next time". Plutonic said then walked away. He knew that the boy was in deep thoughts about something... something that could be the cause of his sadness. Plutonic was aware that Aisha and Hamlin knew what could be possibly be wrong with their son. Whatever it was, Plutonic had a feeling it wasn't good such that his friends his it from him all these years and He needed to know what it was as fast because it was high time for him to intervene and solve it if he could and at this point he could only trust one person to help him out in full discretion and commitment... His son... Lucky!.

Plutonic knocked once on his son's bedroom door before letting himself in even before Lucky could answer it. Lucky looked up at him from the comic book he had been reading before the intrusion.

He sighed as he sat up on the bed while Plutonic shut the door behind him.

"It's urgent". He breathed out as his eyes glowed their red color before setting back to their normal color. Lucky nodded and whispered a spell that formed a magic barrier around his room so as to prevent unwanted ears listening into their conversation. It wasn't their first time to talk like this anyway. Plutonic used his son's antisocial status to send him on errands that he could trust no one else with. He trusted him the most and loved him as well.

"Shoot!".

"I will buy you that condo villa or whatever it was you wanted". Plutonic started.

Lucky raised a brow at that as a big smile formed on his face. "Now we're talking! Tell me what's the catch?". He asked as Plutonic sat on the bed beside him.
