Chapter 2: 2

That night she stayed up staring at the ceiling. It's not that she couldn't sleep. It's that she didn't want to. If she were to fall asleep, she could get badly hurt. She could even die. Her dreams are still dreams, but whatever damage she takes in dreams, she takes in the real world. She can't take that risk. She tries to take short naps in class, because she knows she will get woken up, but she can't risk anymore than that. She has kept this secret for seven years. She is fourteen now. It all happened when she was seven; their apartment went up in harsh flames. She got trapped and passed out. She had seen the other side. She had seen her family over the years. She had seen her best friend, who died of cancer. But she suddenly felt a jerk of electricity run throughout her whole body, and the bright lights of the hospital stung her eyes. "She's alive!" People were shouting. "It's a miracle!" She could've died. She could've gone without saying goodbye. But she was given a second chance. Her family was crowded around her, all crying tears of joy. She had never told her family, now she felt as if it was too late.

...

Must. Stay. Awake. She struggled. Her eyelids were heavy, and she strained to keep them open. The last thing she remember, was black dots climbing into her vision. She opened her eyes, but her sight was slightly blurry. Once the blur had cleared, she looked around. Tall redwoods, towering over her, making her look like an ant. A clear stream, winding around a beautiful meadow. She knew this had to be a dream. "Augh!" She screamed. "Wake up!!" "Excuse me miss?" Said a weird voice. She looked down. There was a small ogre looking thing approaching her. "I advise you not to yell." "Sir, you don't understand! This is my dream! I could get hurt!" Sapphire said, ignoring his advice. "Is this really a dream? Or is your world our dream." Said the short ogre. "Listen... ogre, I don't know who you think you are, but you need to help me get out!" "I am a mere goblin" "well I need help!" He made a grunting noise. "Please?" She begged. Grunts. "Fine." He groaned. "How do I get out?" She asked. "I have never been that far. But I can give you stuff that should help." His slimy hands reached into a hidden pouch on his stomach. He pulled out a pearl and a map. Sapphire just stood there. "What is this again?" She asked. "This pearl is a very rare and valuable item. The map... is a map."

She studied the map.

"What is it of?" She said after a while.

The goblin waved an arm around them. Sapphire looked around them. She hadn't realized how beautiful this place was. There weren't a lot of redwoods, but there were still some. Past a meadow with tall grass, there was a big, clean, lake. All around them, in the distance, there was a beautiful mountain range. But did she really want to do this? A dream isn't that different from real life. Her dreams, at least. She could get hurt, and die in real life. Maybe it wasn't that bad after all. Maybe she could start a new life here. She wasn't a huge fan of people anyway. What am I thinking?! Sapphire, you are going on this mission! She looked at her feet and rocked forward and backward. Finally she took a step into the meadow. The adventure begun.
