Chapter 5: Halloween
It had been 5 months since the guardians graduated and started training. Tonight, they had the day off for the Halloween party. Every year, Emperor Hades threw a Halloween party and invited everyone. It was always a lot of fun, especially with the costume contest. Guests were encouraged to dress up and go all out.
Harry woke up to the sound of whispers around his bed. He keeps his eyes closed while listening to what they were saying.
"I'm not waking him up. I woke him up last year and he didn't talk to me the whole day because he woke up a minute before his alarm. I mean, who does that?" Harry recognizes the voice as his friend Brooke.
"Well, I'm not doing it," this time Ella speaks. "I woke him up for Christmas and he didn't give me my present until the end because I was rushing him. Even though I was right in doing so because we would've been late to the Christmas dinner if he went at his normal turtle speed."
"So, I have to do it," Holt's voice came out defeated. His friends nod at him causing him to walk towards Harry.
"You know," Harry speaks up, earning screams from his friends. "You guys really suck at whispering." He sits up in bed and rubs his eyes before looking at his friends.
"Happy birthday!" They all scream. Brooke and Ella throw confetti all over him, brightening the otherwise dark room. Holt sits next to him on the bed with a small cake in his hands, a candle is lit up for Harry to blow out.
They all clap after Harry blows out the flame and lets him get out of bed. While he changes, Ella takes off the cover of the knife she had brought and cuts the small cake into 4 pieces. They talk about the party while eating.
"Do you think our parents will be there?" Harry asks.
"They are actually!" Brooke says, excitedly. "I texted my mom last night and she said they're all coming."
"That's great," Harry smiles.
"When are we supposed to get ready for that anyway?" Holt asks.
"We," Ella says, pointing to her and Brooke. "Have to start getting ready in 30 minutes. I don't know what you guys are dressing up as so, plan it out."
"We'll probably start getting ready then too," Harry looks at Holt and nods. As planned, they go to their rooms to start getting ready for the party happening in 4 hours.
Princess Opal knocks on Ella's door, entering when she hears Ella say "come in." She finds that Brooke was also in her room.
"Princess," Ella and Brooke both stop doing their makeup and bow to Opal.
"Oh, you don't need to bow," Opal shakes her head. "I just wanted to see how you guys were doing."
"We're almost done," Brooke says. "We just have to finish our makeup and put on our costumes."
"What are you guys dressing up as?" Opal asks as she sits on the bed.
"Ella is gonna be a vampire, she got a Dracula costume with the fangs and cape with the long collar. The fangs are glued on so they look more real and last longer," Brooke explains. "I'm gonna be a zombie/hospital patient. I have a hospital gown with fake blood all over it and I'm gonna add a bracelet on my upper arm with a fake knife attached to it. It looks like the knife is in my arm."
"What are you going as?" Ella asks.
Opal shakes the shock out of her body before responding. "I'm going as a fairy. You guys really go all out don't you?"
"Of course, it's also Harry's birthday today. We've always celebrated by attending the Halloween party with full effort," Ella says.
"That sounds like fun," Opal says with a smile. "Well, I'll leave you two to get ready. I have to go check on the gifts for the royal family."
They say goodbye to each other and continue getting ready. Once everyone is ready, they meet outside by the cars.
"There's no way you guys did that makeup yourselves," Ella comments.
"Well, believe it," Harry tells her. "I've been watching you and Brooke for years so I've picked up a few tricks. I also watched a lot of youtube videos."
"Dude, that is so good," Brooke moves Holt's face around and examines the makeup.
"Let's go, everyone!" Emperor Arden walks towards the car that he and the rest of the royal family are taking.
The guardians get into their car and the driver sets off. They spend the majority of the trip talking about all the costumes they're excited to see. Before they know it, they arrive at the venue.
The building was large with many floors, Empress Persophone had rented the top floor for the night, allowing them to walk out onto the roof whenever they want to. Emperor Arden walked in first with Empress Iris at his side. The prince followed them with Cheryl and Opal with her boyfriend went after them. Ella walked next to Brooke, leaving the boys to walk behind them.
Prince Axel and Princess Esther greet them at the front door, giving their gift to the butler standing next to them. Axel leads the emperor and empress to his parents while Esther introduces them to the royal advisors of the Court of Hell.
"It's an honor to meet you, Guardians," the tallest advisor, Josh, says. "We've been looking forward to seeing you all tonight."
"The honor is all ours," Ella says with a smile, showing off the fake fangs she had put on earlier.
"We were hoping to talk to Harry about joining us in Hell to better his training with his powers," Bethany, the only girl they had met so far, turns to Harry with a hopeful look.
"That would be great, actually," Harry says.
"Then we'll let you get to it," Holt nods to Harry and walks away with his friends.
"You guys don't believe them do you?" Holt asks.
"Hell no," Ella immediately stands at one of the high tables and looks directly at where Harry is standing.
"I'm not the only one who got a bad vibe from them?" Brooke asks.
"I knew they were no good when giraffe over there couldn't keep eye contact with me for more than 3 seconds," Ella says.
"They're not the advisors are they?" Holt asks.
"Nope," Axel walks up to them. "Those are Esther's friends, she's had an eye out for Harry ever since you guys were announced as the guardians. The real advisors are near my father, they're kind of like his personal guards."
"Are we getting ready for a fight?" Brooke asks.
Ella sighs before answering.
"Probably."
