Chapter 42: Heartbeat

WRITTEN BY PATIENT #31

I am a rather social individual, who tries to take the best out of the worst, finding interaction in this hospital at the most.

At the time of me writing this paper, I felt my eardrums are having the same effect as an actual drum, banging on about in my head and shaking the blood. The thing about my ears, is that they pick up sounds that nobody else seem to notice. They think I'm going mad, so they put me in this place.

I meanwhile would blame them for being ignorant through their phones, technology that they use as an excuse to ignore things around them.

Patient #33 and I have a solid friendship going on. We've known each other since I was placed here as a patient. As expected by the position of our numbers, our rooms are well next to each other. I'm not one to meddle with one's affairs, but sometimes I position my head next to my wall, listening in to any noise that may or may not appear in her room. Sometimes I would her talking to herself.

'How I feel faint as my brain continues to work hard.' was what she said. This line was a recurring thing for her to say.

One day, after I finished brushing my teeth and I went out to breath some fresh air in the gardens. I noticed the door of her room was still open. Like my door, her door had the large number 33 written on it. Did she have an appointment with a doctor I wondered.

A large soundwave of a drill struck my ears, bringing me to my knees. As I began to look up, the hallways became red,

"Citra!" Patient 33's voice called to me. I had not told my name to any other patient than her when I first arrived.

My instinct got the best of me, and I ran toward the hallways, heading into a part of the hospital where sessions take place. The drilling hit my soft ears again, as I positioned my hands on top of them.

The drilling stopped as I took a deep breath, then I heard beating.

I placed my hand above my chest, feeling my own heart beat. I continued walking around, and I saw from afar a doctor looking at a chair. I positioned myself behind a wall, where the doctor could not see me, my left eye peeking out and keeping watch until the doctor left the room.

I made my way toward the room, and saw Patient 33's poor tired and harmed face. Her head had bandages. The beating got louder and louder as I approached.

Her head had a hole, and within that hole I could see an organ, almost like a heart, beating inside, in its alive condition. My hands reached for her restraints, and I felt the need to free her.

I felt a hand landing and grasping on my shoulder, stopping my own heart. Turning around, it was the doctor, a female doctor to be more precised, her long hair covering her entire face.

But under that hair was a smile as wide as the skies.
