Chapter 2: Ruby
I smile at Johnny, well, more of a smirk, "Tell him I said hello." Johnny dips his head ever so slightly as if to reply without words. Then I walk back to my dorm calmly. Leave it to my brother to come up with something like this, giving powers to humans. Defying whatever natural laws that decided we don't get them at birth. I hope it turns out better than his other "experiments". I remember the one where he tried to implant a chip in people's heads that allowed him to control them, "It's for the military to be more efficient" he said. well, lets just say that backfired big time. I try to block out the memories.
I look over at Ace when he opens my dark oak door and walks in, closing the door silently behind him. "The door's there for a reason." I sit on my bed and look directly at him.
"It also wasn't locked for a reason." He says smiling sympathetically. He's the one person who knows what i've been through, i've known him since I was 6. Neither of us had the best home lives… but i'm guessing none of the other people here have good home lives, otherwise they wouldn't be here.
"Are you okay?" He looks at me with hidden concern in his eyes,
I nod, "I knew this was coming, so did you, I told you." He grimaces and looks out the big glass doors leading to my porch thoughtfully. "So, you and miss Blondie?"
He glares at me, "Her name is Lynn. And yes, I do like her."
I laugh, "You really think that's going to work out well? Love is a distraction…" I sigh internally, I like Ace, I have since we were 15… and now this Lynn girl comes along, with her blue eyes and stupid smile. I shake my head and smile falsely at him, He can't know how I feel for him.
He shrugs, "Even if it is a distraction I can't help it, you know that." He is referencing to my old boyfriend that killed my mother. But little does he know I never liked him, and that's the reason why he killed her.
So I lie, ��I guess I do." He nods and sighs thoughtfully,
"She- I- what am I gonna do? There is no time for love, Not with this going on." He runs his hand through his hair and paces. I watch, he's really cute when he's nervous… well, he's cute all the time but moving on.
I sigh, "I dunno Ace, just figure it out when the time comes."
Ace groans in frustration, "But I need to stop… this is going to drive me insane."
I roll my eyes, "oh come on Ace- it's just love. there will be others. if you are that desperate to stop feeling this way then just kill her."
Ace looks at me with the most scary glare I have ever seen. I flinch a little and look down, he practically growls at me, "Touch her. You'll be dead in less than a second." I nod and lay on my back.
"Sorry. You should go, they will be sending the personality quizzes soon." He simply nods and walks out.
A while later an old, overweight butler delivers a silver platter with a dome cover to my maid. "Thanks Hannah" I say as she sets it on my gray wooden nightstand. I take the lid off and see a thick, yellow packet and a folded scrap of paper. I open the scrap and read my brothers sickly perfect handwriting.
My dearest Ruby~
I am positively delighted that you have decided to contribute to this experiment. After you take the quiz I would be very pleased if you could grace me with your presence at 12:30 in the dining hall on the 4th floor for lunch.

I scowl, the audacity. But, what do I have to lose?

It took me about two hours to complete the packet. It was like those buzzfeed quizzes you take when your bored, but 500 pages long. I glance at the clock- 12:00.
"Do you want a new dress for your lunch today miss Ruby?"
I half smile at Hannah, "No, this is fine." I look down at the black, sweater material, long sleeve dress. It's simple but pretty. Hannah nods and touches up my curls and then starts cleaning the bathroom.
