Chapter 4: Chapter 4
I grabbed his hand, shaking it with the best confidence I could muster. "Follow me" he said before he was storming through the halls.
Turning left then right, I almost have to jog to keep up with his pace. My mom and dad long behind us. This place has often reminded me of a hospital with its cold and gloomy presence. Even the smell was almost clinical like the walls were hosed with bleach and disinfectant. Would it kill them to use some air freshener maybe add some plants ? All that's missing was the beeping of the monitor's.
Dozens of black doors pass us before we get to the very last door on the left. A red door. The metal letters spelling 'ELITES ONLY.' Right like anyone besides an elite would be stupid enough to pass these doors. My dad would tell me stories of kids who would just disappear trying to sneak in here late at night. Trying to get a glimpse of their future. Little did they know they wouldn't have one by passing through this door at too young of an age. It almost makes me sad but before I can think too much on the topic the doors slide open and I'm walking in. "Here goes nothing " I whispered under my breath.
I'm trying to take in my surroundings but this guy seems to be in a hurry. Tapping his shoe incessantly and staring at me expectantly nodding his head the chair to his left. He grabs my arm the second I slide in barely having time to react to the cold metal hitting my back. I feel my heart quicken as this all feels like it's going to fast. I didn't want this. My stomach starts to churn as he's typing getting the machine ready to scan me I'm assuming.
Nothing could prepare me for this moment. "It's ready to scan just hold your sleeve up" he says sounding just as uniform and cold as his hello. The arm of this machine starts slowly scanning my arm feeling like it's taking years just to get to my elbow. The blue light waving against my pale almost translucent skin.
I've always thought my mark looked like a baby bat. Just trying to get bigger spreading it's wings so it could fly out of here. Or maybe that's what I wanted and I was just projecting.
Finally the machine beeped and the blue light was gone. "It's here ! We've found him." The man spoke excitedly a smile spreading across his features. Showing emotion I didn't think he was capable of. Why was this good? Wait was there a chance I wouldn't have had a match? All these questions began swimming in my mind.
But they stopped the instant he moved the screen so I could look. Eyes that's all I saw. And they were black.
