Chapter 79: Chapter Seventy-Nine: An ex-boyfriend

When Clair got home, she did not see any sign of James. She changed into some comfortable clothes and eat dinner in her study room.

After working till 11 pm, she finally realized that James had yet to come home, and he had also not texted or call her. Not that he had the obligation to, but still…

Was it because of yesterday?

After he mentioned something that had been disturbing her all day.

'She doesn't want me to blame myself for another death.'

Clair furrowed her eyebrows. What is that supposed to mean? What exactly happened in his past?

She shook all those thoughts away and did a few more things she had pending before going off to bed that night.

The next morning she did not see him or get any direct message from him. She didn't want to express her obvious curiosity, so she never called Jace to ask about his whereabouts.

After all, the assistant had given her his personal phone number just in case she would ever need anything.

Yaci got off work feeling exhausted. Today was unexpectedly busy and Clair had not been in a great mood either.

She also had period cramps and would sometimes vent all her frustration on her, which she was used to.

Shaking her head, she walked toward her car.

The parking lot was almost empty since only a few employees had stayed overtime today. So it was super quiet and spacious.

Inserting her key in the car, she froze when she felt a hand grab her wrist, stopping her from turning the key.

She felt her skin crawl as she looked up at the familiar face in horror.

"Yaci…" He whispered.

She opened her mouth and tried to speak, but she was too shocked to even react.

"How have you been?"

"Wh-" She swallowed and composed herself. "What are you doing here?"

"I'm here to see you, of course. I-" He scratched the back of his head, letting go of her wrist, and his ears turned red.

"I missed you."

"Fuck you." She turned her head and opened her door, but before she could enter, he pulled her back out and slammed the door close.

"Do you know what you are doing? Leave me alone!"

"I heard you've been telling people I'm dead. Yaci, how could you say that to our daughter of all people?"

"I'm sorry." She lowered her head, strands of her hair falling down her cheeks and covering the sneer she had playing on her lips.

He sighed as if accepting her apology.

She lifted her head, and he finally noticed her sneer.

"I'm sorry that I didn't realize it earlier. I'm just so scared, I never thought I could speak to ghosts. But these days have been crazy, so it's probably all a hallucination Goodbye."

"Yaci! Stop your games. I'm serious. I want to meet our daughter."

"MY daughter, she's MY daughter. Not yours, not 'ours' she's MY daughter." She corrected him, shaking him off once more.

"Please, leave me alone and go."

He took a deep breath and said, "Let's go get a coffee or something and talk this out. My lawyers suggested I sue you for running away with our daughter. You know you'll get in big trouble for that, right? I want to talk things out because I'm sure we can agree on something."

"Sue me? You want to sue me? I should be the one-" Yaci gritted her teeth and shoved him away, getting in her car.

Turning on the engine, she watched him get in front of her car to stop her.

Her mind wandered off to all the other times he had done the same thing and forced her to stay back, as he played the victim card and guilt-tripped her.

'If he does that again, kill him. That simply.'

'Just run over him, is not that hard.'

She could seriously imagine Clair rolling her eyes at her right now and scolding her for being hesitant.

A bitter smile played on her ex-boyfriend's face as he noticed her obvious hesitation. She swallowed all of those bitter emotions and pressed her foot on the gas pedal.

His eyes rounded in shock, and he immediately jumped away in shock. He started yelling and shouting curses at her as he watched her speed off.

Finally, on the road and a few minutes away from the building, Yaci's heartbeats slowed and her chest tightened. She grabbed onto the steering wheel tightly and took deep breaths in.

She was shocked at herself. She did that!

'Being around Clair does things to you' She thought to herself, slightly proud.

"It's fine. Everything is fine." She repeated trying to convince herself.

Now, she had to clear her head and think things through. She needed to list all the names of people who possibly ratted out information about where she's working.

Her mind took her to the event where Clair had screwed her ex-boyfriend's brother over, and she realized that he might have seen her that day and confirmed that he indeed works there.

"Was it her?" She mumbled, thinking of her sister.

She parked her car in a random place and took a few minutes to herself.

She suddenly received a message from Clair and she responded to it quickly, wondering if she should ask her for help in this situation. Thinking it over, she shook her head, going against the idea. Clair had enough on her plate and if she didn't solve this herself, she could never escape it.

Biting her lip, she took her decision and started asking Lukas many questions relating to the ways she could win the case against her ex-boyfriend. He is the only lawyer she could actually trust, after all the ones she had contacted before turned out to be on her ex-boyfriend's side—to be specific on money's side.

'Evidence? How am I going to find evidence?' She asked herself as she read through Lukas's explanations.

'He erased all evidence.' She added onto her thoughts, feeling completely devastated.

How would she solve this now?
