Chapter 2: End of the Beginning

*Click...Click...Click…

*BANG!

*Dong...Dong...Dong…

*Whoosh!

Zion's sight was suddenly restored. He squinted against the bright light and waited for his vision to return to norma-

"Ahhh!" The sudden pain in Zion's left arm made him screech. He looked at the rough man that dragged him ruthlessly along. "What are you doing?" Zion asked the man.

The man was utterly silent as he continued to drag Zion around twists and turns.

'Something is wrong' thought Zion and he staggered along. After a few minutes, they arrived at the back gate and saw a shiny Lamborghini parked there.

The man opened the back door and shoved Zion inside. He then proceeded to the driver's seat.

Once the car was up and running, Zion saw a young man in the passenger seat. The young man was clutching his arms and shivering nonstop.

"Riley, you are here too?" Zion stated "Do you know what is going on?"

Riley ignored Zion while turning to look at the rough man. "What took you so long?"

"I'm sorry, sir. There were complications during the trip." The rough man drove out of the backyard and switched onto the main road.

Silence settled into the car. With nothing to do, Zion looked outside the window.

The once prosperous community was in chaos. The streets were sprayed with blood as corpse-like-humans, no, monsters attacked civilians. Zion observed the shattered windows and listened to the piercing screams.

One man ran out of a burning house, panting with relief until he glanced at an approaching zombie. He screamed and ran away, only for other zombies to corner and devour him.

Riley glanced away and swallowed down his nausea while Zion kept looking at the remains of the bloody corpse. Riley weakly asked "Where are we going?"

The rough man swerved the car to avoid a zombie, "Your father called me and asked me to bring you to the Capital."

Zion asked "What is the situation there?"

The man didn't even bother looking at Zion. Riley fidgeted and repeated Zion's question.

"I'm sorry, sir. The master did not disclose any other information." The man examined Riley's pale face and proceeded to say "I speculate that the Capital will be safer than here, with more troops and police at their disposal."

"Alright, then let's go there." Riley breathed, a little relieved.

The rest of the car ride continued in silence. The rough man avoided the highway and took an alternate route. Zion gazed at the scenery outside. Perhaps because the community is wealthy with a small population, other than the few occasional zombies, there was nothing too troubling. The car swerved to avoid zombies and other panicking cars when needed. Sometimes it will hit a zombie head on. Riley's breath quickened each time it happened and it took him several minutes to calm down.

When the sun fell, the sky bled into reds and oranges, seemingly agreeing with the current state of the world.

The car parked near a motel. Zion and Riley waited in the car while the man went to scout out the seemingly desolate area.

"All clear," the man opened the trunk of the car and got out a duffel bag. He led Zion and Riley to a room on the second floor. He checked all the potential hiding spaces, gave them the duffel bag, and instructed them "I will go out to look for oil and other supplies. Eat the food in the bag and wait for me to come back. Don't forget to lock the door after I leave."

After the rough man was gone, Zion sat down on the floor. Riley settled on the chair, looking at the food gloomily.

"What do you think happened for these monsters, or should I call it, zombies to emerge?" Riley chatted while he ate.

"I'm not sure, with so little information available, it must not be known to the general public." Zion answered.

"Yeah, I think so too." Riley agreed, "Do you think the Capital is safer than back home?"

Zion glanced at Riley "If your father still has his influence, then you will be a lot safer there."

"That's true."

The two finished their dinner in silence.

*Knock knock

"Who is it?" Riley shouted.

"Me," came the deep voice of the man.

Zion got up to let the man back in. The man distributed some toiletries and the three of them took turns to wash up.

There was only one bed in the room so Zion slept on the floor. He closed his eyes and settled into blankness.

The next morning, the three continued their journey to the Capital. The rough man somehow found a truck and loaded their supplies. On the road, Zion witnessed the passing scenery tainted with chaos and destruction. Stores were smashed, goods stolen. Houses were robbed, with the front door open. The rough man ruthlessly ran over the wandering zombies that came their way.

As the car approached the Capital, an enormous Bridge appeared in sight.

The Suspension Bridge would have been a sight to behold if not for the blood and overturned cars. There were so many abandoned cars that there is no way for a car to pass through.

"Shit..." muttered the man as he stepped off the truck, "Stay in the car and don't make trouble."

Zion and Riley waited obediently. When the man came back, he said gloomily, "The roads are blocked, the car can't pass through. We could either look for another route to enter the city or walk across the bridge since there doesn't seem to be any zombies."

Riley looked at the metal protector, "Don't we need the car?"

"It is not necessary because we would soon arrive at the Capital and could use your father's cars." The man answered.

The three navigated through the gaps between the cars, walking on the cars when there were no gaps. Sometimes Riley would require the man to lift him onto the cars.

The trio finally made it halfway across the bridge when the man sensed an abnormality. "GO BACK!"

The man directly carried Riley and shuffled between the cars. Zion tried to keep up but lagged behind after a while.

*Cruuunch

The pain in his shoulder made Zion look back, right into a rotten face of a zombie.

Zion struggled against the zombie, kicking and punching without actual technique.

For every kick he got in, the zombie got a bite in.

Zion dragged his pained body and scrambled to the top of a trunk, gaining a height advantage.

He then used his feet to kick dislocate the zombie's face, splashing gunk everywhere.

The zombie collapsed on the ground.

Zion panted and looked back at the duo, already in the truck.

Even though their figures were blurry in the distance, Zion could sense some hesitance from the man.

In the next moment, it was gone.

The truck sped away, leaving behind only Riley's desperate cries.

"WAIT, NO, DON"T LEAVE BEHIND ZION!!!!"

"PLEASE, NOT ZION, not Eva. Please..."

The noise soon faded away.

Zion looked at the scene before him, 'Never thought that I can die in this manner.'

Numerous zombies crawled out beneath cars and gathered into a mob. The suspension bridge came 'alive,' the once empty street was filled with zombies.

The zombies approached Zion and engulfed him, swallowing him into the darkness.
